Physics (AP-1101)

The syllabus of this course can be divided mainly into two sections- Classical
Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics.
Classical Mechanics was introduced, and Lagrangian and Hamiltonian functions and
their applications were discussed in detail.
Further, Quantum Mechanics was introduced and its importance was made clear. In this
section, main stress was given on Schrdingers equations and Relativistic
Quantum Mechanics.
Chemistry (AC-1101)
This course covered all the three major sections of chemistry: Organic Chemistry,
Physical Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry.
In Organic Chemistry, there was an in-depth analysis of the types and mechanisms of
Substitution and Elimination reactions. In physical chemistry, Chemical Kinetics
and Photochemistry were covered and in Inorganic Chemistry, students gained an
insight on Co-ordination Compounds and Titrimetric Analysis.
Mathematics (AM-1101)
In this course we took a look back on the Real Number system. The concept of
Convergence of Sequences and Series and various other properties and theorems
related to the same were taken up. Sections of Differential Calculus including
Continuity, Limits, Maxima and Minima, Point of inflection etc. were discussed in
detail. Topics of Integral Calculus and Calculus of Vector-valued functions were
also looked upon.
Engineering Thermodynamics (ME-2102)
Work and heat transfer pdV, displacement work, heat transferrin system
First law of thermodynamics closed system, energy, enthalpy, heat capacity, isolated
system, flow process, mass and energy balance
Second law of thermodynamics heat engine, heat pump, carnots theorem, efficiency
Entropy and energy entropy generation, adiabatic work, entropy change, quality of
energy, exergy in closed and steady flow system
Properties of pure substance steam tables.
Cycle rankine, carnot, otto, diesel, dual, Brayton, refrigeration cycle

Engineering Mechanics (ME-1101)


The syllabus for this course included basic mechanical principles. It dealt with solving
real life problems related to kinematics and dynamics of rigid bodies. Concepts
involving trusses (cantilever beams), friction, moment, energy balance, force
balance, free body diagrams were explored in detail. The course was intended to
inculcate and develop a pragmatic approach towards solving real world challenges.

Computer programming and graphics (AM-1103)


The course provided an introduction to basic algorithms and syntax of ANSII C
language. Basic outlook towards programming was developed. Concepts of functions,
data types, operators, keywords and other basics of programming were introduced.
ANSII C language was explored in detail. Basic concepts of graphics were explored.
Engineering Drawing (ME1301)
The concept and techniques of Engineering Drawing were introduced through this
course. Imagination and drawing of various types of projections of different views
were taught. The topic of Development of Surfaces was also taken up.
Manufacturing Practices (ME-1302)
In Manufacturing Practices, we covered a total of 8 workshops namely1.

In each of these workshops, we understood and gained the basic practical skills which
will come in handy in our future as an engineer.
Physics Practical (AP-1301)
The Physics Practical focused on the Mechanical aspects of Physics. Various
experiments were performed which included the determination of surface tension,
viscosity, specific rotation of cane sugar, moment of inertia, acceleration due to
gravity, Youngs modulus etc. Also experiments were performed to verify the laws of
conservation of momentum and energy in an elastic collision.
CHEMISTRY (AC-1202)

Organic Chemistry
In the organic chemistry section SN1, SN2, SNi, Elimination reaction, mechanism of E1,
E2, SN1, SN2, SNi, E1CB, Factors affecting rates of reaction, solvents polar, nonmolar, protic, aprotic, aromaticity, reaction on aromatic compounds, oils, polymers,
soaps and detergents were covered.
Inorganic Chemistry
In this section different types of titration, namely

Argentometric
Redox titration
Complexometric
conductometric

Coordination compounds & Organometallic compounds their properties ,synthesis and


applications were also covered.
Professional communication (PC-1201)
This course included the following units
Unit 1 Technical writing

introduction to professionally written communication


producing the product : prewriting, writing, rewriting
objectives in technical writing : clear, concise, accurate
audience recognition and involvement : to engage readers

Unit 2 Correspondence

memos and emails : format of memos/emails and their usage


letters : letters to client, authorities, juniors and seniors.

Unit 3 Grammar handbook

Grammar : common errors in usage


Punctuation : use of comma, semicolon(;), colon(:), hyphen(-)
Mechanics: sentence, phrase and clause construction
Spelling: correct spelling and usage of difficult words.

Mathematics (AM-1202)

The course of Mathematics was covered in three broad disciplines , namely


1. Linear algebra :It included the concepts of group, ring, field, vector space, subspace,
linear, combination, basis and dimension.
2. Complex numbers: This sections included topics like limit, differentiability, analytic
function, harmonic functions, residue theorem, poles, Cauchys inequality.
3. Differential equation: This section covered concepts of differential equations including
their order and degree, exact differential equation, solving linear differential equations
with constant coefficients, method of variation of parameters.

Physics (AP-1202)
This course was divided in two parts, namely
Electromagnetic waves: This section covered Biot savart law, amperes law, maxwells
equations and Laplace equations.
Optics: This section includes reflection and refraction of light, polarization, diffraction,
Youngs double slit experiment, fraunhofer diffraction and Newtons rings

Environmental studies (ES-1201)


This course covered the following topics:
1. Environmental studies: A multidisciplinary studies, importance of environment, need
for public awareness
2. Natural resources: forest, mineral, water resources.
3. Ecosystem: concept, food web, food chain, ecological pyramids, types of ecosystems
4. Biodiversity and its conservation: genetic, species, ecosystem diversity, biological
classification of India, India as a mega-diversity loss of habitat.

5. Social issues and the environment

Physics Lab (AP-1402)

The Physics Practical focused on the Electromagnetic and Optical aspects of Physics.
Various experiments were performed which included the calculation of wavelength of
monochromatic light by Newtons ring experiment, Fresnel biprism , Nodal distance
by Nodal slide , refractive index of prism by spherometer , Wavelength of light by
minimum deviation method , Conversion of galvanometer to ammeter and
voltmeter , study of variation of magnetic field on the axis of Helmholtz
galvanometer and use of potentiometer to compare e.m.f of two cells,internal
resistance and comparison of two resistances .
CHEMISTRY LAB (AC-1401)
In this practical course the chemical changes and behavior of different chemical species
and reactions were observed. These include determination of free fatty acids in a
given oil sample , Critical solution temperature, determination of order of reaction
, various titrations including thermometric , complexometric and redox titrations
and determination of free chlorine in a give water sample .
Manufacturing Practices(ME-1302)
In Manufacturing Practices, we covered a total of 8 workshops namely7. Welding

12. Sheet Metal
In each of these workshops, we understood and gained the basic practical skills which
will come in handy in our future as an engineer.
