6MB Telecontrol System

6MB5515 Station control unit

Application
The 6MB5515 station control unit performs the functions of a remote substation for medium and large quantities of
process signals in transformer substations and switchyards of utilities and industry.
Providing a larger range of functions than
traditional telecontrol equipment, it can
also be implemented for system management at the station control level. Here, it
not only performs basic individually configurable telecontrol functions but also the
following tasks:
 Human-machine interface
 Logging
 Archiving
Processing of process data from bay
control units and protection data from
numerical protection equipment
 Sequential and logic functions, interlocks
 Extended analog value processing
 Extended metered value processing.
The unit is connected centrally to the
switchyard in parallel via the terminal
block. In addition, it is possible to make
serial connections via fibre-optic cable
not only with numerical protection devices but also with distributed input/output units of the 6MB substation control
system, especially for switchyard expansion.
In addition to the station control unit
6MB5515 described here, the telecontrol
system 6MB of the SINAUT LSA station
control equipment provides the following
devices for cost-effective operation:
 6MB552 compact remote terminal unit
for switchyards with medium quantity
of process signals
6MB5530 minicompact remote terminal unit for switchyards with small
quantity of process signals.
Design and method of operation
The 6MB5515 station control unit comprises max. 6 two-tier subracks of the
ES902 packaging system with doubleheight (6 U) plug-in modules.
These are connected to one another via
an internal standard bus through the upper backplane connector and are addressed independently of their slot. The
lower backplane connector provides the
module-specific link to the process. To
provide improved EMC characteristics,
the frontplates are made of aluminium.
Unused slots are covered with blanking
plates. Operation is usually without fans.
Modules are slotted in as required for the
functions of the station control unit and
the volume of information handled in the
switchyard.

In addition to the powerful 80386 processor and memory required for the program
code and parameters, the FP telecontrol
processor module implemented in the
basic unit contains six interfaces which
are used by two separate and very powerful 68302 communications processors:
One 2 kV isolated system interface
V.24/V.28 (RS232C)
One 8-fold multiplex interface for connecting 8 digital input/output units and
numerical protection equipment via
fibre-optic cable which can also be
used as a system interface
 One interface for loading parameters
and for testing and diagnostics functions
 Three system interfaces.

These system interfaces which are not

isolated on the FP can be led away from
the unit as isolated V.24-type (RS232C)
interfaces or as fibre-optic interfaces.
The functions of the system interfaces
are loaded in the FP in the form of a software package. It is thus possible to assign the following functions to the system interfaces:
 Connection of a VDU
 Connection of a printer
 Link to control centres
 Linking of substations
 Mass storage read-out
 Testing and diagnostics
 Duplication interface for redundant
operation
 Connection of I/O devices and/or
protection devices in line operation.

Design and method of operation (cont.)
Extended analog value processing functions such as limit value processing and
other functions using resultant value calculations (floating-point arithmetic) are
efficiently supported by the 80387arithmetic coprocessor.
If the archiving option is used in the station control unit, the LPII substation processor module is used instead of the FP
telecontrol processor module.
The LPII module is 100% interface-compatible with FP module.
Archiving is performed in the LPII module
in an 8 MB mass storage module
equipped with non-wearing semiconductor memory components called flash
EPROMs.
The archived data are evaluated by a PC
using the evaluation program LSAPROCESS.
The FP and LPII modules also maintain
precise time synchronization of the entire
system with a receiver for the time signal transmitters DCF77 (Mainflingen) and
MSF (Rugby) integrated on an additional
module.
Both modules can communicate with a
PC and the user-friendly test and diagnosis program LSADIAG via a serial test
and diagnosis interface located on the
front of each module. The FP and LPII
processor modules are therefore the central processing, storage and communication units.
The FP and LPII modules
Manage the 16-bit system bus of the
unit
 Communicate with the higher and
lower telecontrol levels and up to eight
bay control units via their serial interface
Receive and manage the parameterization data of the system
Load the configuration data onto all the
modules of the station control unit and
any distributed bay control units
Start up the entire system independently
Coordinate all test and diagnosis functions between the PC program LSADIAG and the system
Coordinate and monitor all the function
units of the station control unit
 Manage the station and system
images
 Keep the date and time
 Archive indications, analog values,
metered values and fault recordings
(LPII only).

Siemens LSA 1.2.6 . March 1997

In more extensive switchyards the SC

standard communications module with
its eight independent communication
channels will be able to handle future
communication tasks too. In the standard
configuration of the station control unit,
the SC module is linked to the serial interface of distributed input/output units
and numerical protection equipment of
the 6MB system via fibre-optic cable.
Quad multiplexers at each of the eight
channels enable the SC to communicate
with up to 32 subunits.
The SC module can also be connected to
the following with the aid of various protocols, including customer-specific protocols
 One or more additional higher-level
control centres or submaster stations
(slaves) and
Lower-level substation remote terminal units via optional node functions.
In order to increase transmission reliability, process information can be transmitted to the higher-level control centre
via redundant channels.
The non-isolated interfaces on the SC
module are implemented on fibre-optic
cable or V.24 type (RS232C) interfaces in
the auxiliary fibre-optic rack.
The LK control centre coupling module in
the 6MB telecontrol system provides a
telecontrol link between the system and
the higher level. It can be implemented in
addition to the communications interfaces of the central processor module
FP/LPII and the SC standard communications module.
In addition to standard protocols IEC
870-5-101 and SINAUT 8FW of the FP/
LPII and SC modules, a large selection of
non-Siemens protocols is also available.
Up to 3 LK control centre coupling
modules with an identical or different
telecontrol structure can be plugged into
a station control unit. Any of these
modules can provide up to two serial
interfaces that are operated according to
V.24 (RS232C).
The ABR-SK serial isolation module
isolates the serial telecontrol links of the
LK control centre coupling module to a
withstand strength of 2 kV. Each isolation
module can isolate up to two channels
from potential displacements of up to 2
kV from the switchyard.

The process is controlled centrally using

several input and output modules each
equipped with its own microcontroller. All
of the input and output cables of this process interface module are isolated
against 2 kV and provide electrical isolation between the process and the control
unit.
The DE digital input module acquires up
to 32 single indications from the process
or the equivalent number of double indications, transformer tap positions, bit
patterns, BCD analog values or metered
values. The module itself performs a series of indication preprocessing such as,
for example, real-time assignments with
one-ms precision and contact chatter
detection. The 32 single inputs are divided into four mutually isolated groups
of eight inputs each. Each input group
has its own input to which the indication
voltage is connected as a reference
variable. This reference voltage input
permits extremely reliable indication
acquisition thanks to its dynamic adaptation to different indication voltages.
Indication voltage failure is recognized.
The circuit to indication acquisition is
isolated against 2 kV from the rest of the
module via optocouplers. Any malfunctions in indication acquisition are reliably
detected by the processor of the module
and signalled to the central processor
module.
The AE and AR analog input modules
acquire analog measured values. The AE
module has 32 analog inputs which are
connected to a common potential via an
electronic multiplexer. The AR module
has 16 isolated inputs which are connected to four independent analog-to-digital
converters via a relay multiplexer.
The AR module is thus able to scan up to
four analog input variables simultaneously. Both modules provide a series
of different current and voltage measuring ranges of between 1.5 to 24 mA
and 1 to 10 V (see Technical Data).
The standard version of this module
provides for the graded analog value
ranges 0 to 2.5/5/10/20 mA. The analog
values are acquired with 11 significant
bits and one sign bit.
Commands are output to the process
with the BA command output module.
One BA module can output 32 unipolar
commands or 16 bipolar commands. The
BF command enable module which is
included in the standard unit complement
can output 1 -pole commands (2-pole A)
or 16 double commands (2-pole B)
together with a BA module.

6MB Telecontrol System

6MB5515 Station control unit

Design and method of operation (cont.)
If parameterized to do so, the BF module
can perform a switching current check
and test the circuit for zero potential
before outputting a command.
This check and the distribution of the
command output and enable to two
different modules ensures a much higher
degree of reliability against spurious
outputs. Moreover, the check functions
on the module detect cable damage and
wiring faults that would otherwise cause
serious maloperations. The associated
switching processes are suppressed and
the spurious operating state is signalled
the higher level.
The BF module also has eight unipolar
inputs and eight unipolar outputs. These
can be used to monitor local operational
indications, such as the position of the
local/ remote switch, or to output
commands, for example, for LEDs or
audible signals.
One subrack can contain up to 21 input/
output units. In large swichyards, this
might not be enough space to accommodate the necessary input and output modules. In this case, the RK parallel rack
coupling can be used to expand the station control unit to a total of 121 input/
output modules in up to 6 subracks.
The shielded data links of the rack coupling are not isolated and therefore only
intended to be laid inside the cubicle. If
several cubicles are used, they must be
placed side by side.
The SV power supply module for connecting the usual battery and line voltages is integrated into each subrack.
The RM marshalling module is used to
marshal the interfaces of the FP/LPII
modules to the connectors. The isolated
telecontrol interface is brought out via a
9-way subminiature D socket. The
connection for time signal reception is
brought out on the terminal block with
screw terminals and a fibre-optic
interface. The four non-isolated system
interfaces of the FP/LPII module are
distributed to the optional integrated
module for isolation via the RM.
The four system interfaces can be
brought out of the unit as V.24 (RS232C)
type interfaces via the ABR isolation
modules. As an alternative, the system
interfaces can be used as fibre-optic interfaces with the aid of the quadruplicate FO module.

If the eight-fold multiplexed interface for

connecting digital input/output and numerical protection equipment is used, these
eight interfaces are brought out of the
unit as fibre-optic cables using the eightfold FO module. The RM, ABR or fourfold FO module and the eight-fold FO
module are integrated into the unit and
do not occupy any slots.
The ABR and the FO module are also
used in the supplementary FO rack to
isolate the interfaces of the SC modules.
Functions
The station control unit performs all
telecontrol functions that are assigned to
the station control level in its individually
configurable structure:
Communication with the higher telecontrol level with adaptation to the
different communication procedures
and frame structures
 Telecontrol node function (data
concentrator)
 User-specific sequential and logic
functions
 Indication acquisition and processing
 Analog value acquisition and processing
 Meteredvalue acquisition and processing
 Closed-loop control functions
 Human-machine interface
 Maintenance of a daily log
 Communication with serially linked,
distributed input/output units and
numerical protection equipment of the
6MB system
 Archiving of indications, analog values,
metered values and fault recordings.
Further technical details, in particular of
the interfaces and the inputs and outputs
(number, isolations) can be found in the
technical data.
The functions are described in detail in
special catalog sheets (see table on
page 11 User functions).
Other tasks of the remote terminal unit/
station control unit are:
Continuous, comprehensive selfmonitoring and system monitoring
 Support of testing and diagnostics
functions.

Parameterization
The entire plant-specific parameterization
of the station control unit is stored as a
parameter set in a non-volatile memory
of the FP or LPII processor module during
commissioning. The station control unit is
adapted to the special conditions and
requirements of the switchyard in
question by entry of the data. The
parameter set is created with the
LSATOOLS programming package for PC.
The loading process is efficiently
supported by the CB communication
module. The CB module is a
communication board in the PC.
After system startup with autonomous
distribution of the parameters to all the
components and units in the switchyard,
the system is ready for operation.
Changes and expansions can be made at
any time using LSATOOLS.
The parameterization data include:
 Plant configuration and topology
 Equipment configuration of the station
control unit
 Connection to the primary equipment:
acquisition, processing and output parameters for each item of information
from and command to the switchyard
 Specification of the serially connected
numerical relays
Configuration of the telecontrol connections to and from the unit
Complete telecontrol frame assignments and transmission protocols
Function tree for the station control
unit
 Design and appearance of display,
mimic and control diagrams
 Plaintext for logs and displays
 Archiving and logging conventions
 Sequential and logic functions, e.g.
network synchronization, switching
operations
 All interlocks.
The parameter lists are function oriented
and contain the associated setting options and the catalog sheets User functions.
