Primaire oliewinning
Bij primaire oliewinning maakt men gebruik
Technologieregime
Doordat we op het gebied van vervoer,
energievoorziening en materialen zo
afhankelijk zijn van technieken die
gebaseerd zijn op aardolie, kunnen we
spreken van een technologisch regime [dr.
H.A.J. Mulder & drs. C.M. Ree, 2014]. Dit
zet aan tot meer onderzoek naar
technologin die passen binnen dit regime,
zoals EOR, en minder naar technologin die
hier buiten vallen, zoals alternatieve
energiebronnen.
Politiek
De politiek heeft al jarenlang het behoud
van milieu hoog op de agenda staan. De
politiek wordt van alle kanten benvloed
door belanghebbende partijen, zoals
bedrijven en organisaties. Vooral de grote
industrien steken veel geld in lobbyisten
die het beleid proberen te benvloeden. Ook
milieuorganisaties proberen de politiek te
benvloeden, opdat een milieuvriendelijk en
duurzame wetgeving wordt gevormd. We
zullen bekijken welke rol de politiek speelt in
de ontwikkeling van EOR technieken.
Milieu
Conclusie
We hebben aan de hand van drie
verschillende invalshoeken onze
bevindingen op het gebied van de
ontwikkeling en toekomst van EOR
geanalyseerd: vanuit principes betreffende
Total: ~15 trillion barrels (total cumulative consumption up to 2012 = 1 trillion barrels)
With the increasing oil consumption, how would it take before all oil is depleted?
Infinitely long; when the demand exceeds the production, prices will increase and a new
equilibrium will be in place. Recovering oil will become increasingly more difficult in the future,
increasing the price of oil. At a certain moment it is not economically viable anymore to target a
new oil field/tar sands due to the increasing production costs. Therefore, energy production and
transport will rely on other sources in the future, but not in the near future.
In your opinion, should corporations and governments invest in research for oil production, or
should they invest in research for sustainable alternatives for oil products? Or isnt this such a
distinct dilemma?
Of course, governments (and corporations) should investigate sustainable alternatives (global
warming etc.). However, concerning the current demand for oil (especially for the use as fuel),
additional research in the topic of oil recovery is very relevant. I strongly believe the
transportation sector will be highly relying on the petrochemical industry, also in the next
decades. As regulations become more strict (e.g. increasing taxes on carbon emissions),
greener alternatives (wind/solar power, biomass) will become more attractive from an
economical point of view. In the end it all boils down to cost and availability. In order to remain
competitive in the future, companies and also governments should start/continue research
initiatives on alternative fuels/biomaterials. There is definitely no distinct dilemma, as is
subscribed by the fact that at the RuG, several projects are executed in parallel (from
investigating oil production to using waste material from trees in the manufacturing of platform
chemicals).
Which research projects are currently in progress at the RUG concerning EOR?
- Design of new chemical products (polymers and amphiphilics) for EOR
- Strategies towards industrial production of new (branched) polyacrylamide structures for
EOR
How are you participating in these projects?
Investigating the second topic as PhD student
How advanced do you consider the state in which the research in EOR currently finds itself?
The research is in an intermediate phase; a lot is already known. There are several methods
already applied in practice, e.g. steam injection, water flooding, polymer flooding. For polymer
flooding projects it is common knowledge to use a mobility ratio of ~1 (i.e. increase the viscosity
of the water flood to a viscosity comparable to oil). Additional effects are still under investigation;
amphiphilic polymers, alkali mixtures, interfacial effects. Moreover, using polymers with different
structures might enhance the recovery. The exact effects that play a role are still investigated.
Are a lot of investments still required?
For conducting this research? If you take the large volumes of the oil industry into account:
definitely not!
In order to recover the oil? Than yes! Oil wells are become more and more complicated and
thus expensive.
