Learning purpose:
Learning objectives:
On completion of this lesson,
students will be able to:
Create a Jointing tool.

Preparation and Resources:

10mm steel rod

Hack saw
Vice grips
Ball pein hammer
Oxy/acetylene
Metal ruler
Markers
Vice

Evaluation:
The students will be evaluated by
how well the construct their jointing
tool.

Catering for diversity

The main goal in this class would be keeping the students on track.

Explain to the class what will be done in this lesson.

First there will be a demonstration on their next project
which is creating a jointing tool. If they have finished their
mural then they can start this project, if not, they are
finishing off their murals.
Demonstration on Creating Jointing tool:

Get a 10mm steel rod and mark out the measurements

that are given on the handout. 400mm (40mm) 260mm
(70-120-70) 120
Placing the steel rod on the Vice use the hack saw to cut
out 400mm, 260mm and 120mm pieces. Make sure to
show the students how to use the hack saws, start off
slowly and then using the full length of the saw to cut the
pieces.
260mm piece, using ball pein hammer or the oxy to bend
the piece into the handle that is show on the handout.
Demonstrate using the oxy and a pair of vice grips and
heat up the piece until its red hot. Place the piece in a
vice and using the vice grip bend to a 90-degree angle (Or
as close as possible). Use the measuring square to make

sure its as close to 90 as possible.

Once the the hand is heated up, place in the vice and use
the vice grips to bend the piece to what is required.
Show the students what a hammer would look like
compared to the oxy and recommend going for the oxy.
NOTE: Make sure the students to make the bend in the
base too big. Should be around 30 degrees. Tell the
students after the demonstration so they dont bend it
more.

Once these demonstrations are done ask the students if

they are happy with the instructions and ask to go
through them as a class.
Allow the students to continue on their murals or start
their new project.
5-10min before finishing get the students to pack
everything away before being dismissed.

Lesson Evaluation:
The lesson went pretty smoothly. I felt as though my voice
could have been projected better as I was focusing on
trying to demonstrate what needs to be done as well as
explaining it to the students. I have never done
metalwork before so using the oxy and bending the metal
didnt go as smoothly as I hoped. I didnt heat up the
metal enough, In turn, this encouraged the students to
help out and give me advice on what to do which I felt was
great in getting the kids to engage with the lesson. The

introduction ran about the time that i planned for which

left the rest of the lesson for the students to get on with
their work.
I didnt think that the students would finish their task,
especially some of the boys that I found to stand around
and do nothing. I decided to pay a bit more attention to
these boys as I saw the others were working quietly and
efficiently. The boys ended up finishing all their work and
even had some time to help others, which was great.
Overall I felt the lesson went really well, my classroom
management I felt was great although I feel I could have
focused on a couple more students who struggled with
their work that I only started helping towards the end.
Besides that, I was really happy with how the lesson
panned out.
