Myfocusfortheentiretyoftechnicalwritingwasbeingabletowriteinarealsettingand
applyrhetoricalsituationstoreallife.Throughthepersonaofaheadadvocateinanair
conditioningcompanyIutilizedmyexperienceadvocatingforyouthinAmericatoconnecttoa
rhetoricalsituation.Whilethemajorityofmytenureintechnicalwritingwassurroundedwith
rhetoricalsituations,Ihadtocreateanentireanalyticalpaperaboutareallifescenario,and
composeareporttoamendanissuethatispresentinmycommunity.Throughtheuseofa
creativityandinformationgathering,Iimprovedmyabilitytoconnectourrealworld,toa
rhetoricalworldinwhichthePresidentofUniversityofNewMexicowillreadmycomplaintand
takeitintoconsideration,inwhichpeoplewillforgetaboutUberandlookintomyridesharing
application,andinwhichtheworldwilldonatemoneytomakeelectricairconditioningaright.

RightoutofthegatecomingintoEnglish219,Ihadlittleexperiencewritinginrhetorical
situations.Fromprogressreport#1Inotethisashavingonlywrittensmallhalfpagestoriesin
highschool.Thisquicklychangedwithoneofourfirstassignments,inwhichIwrotealetterto
thePresidentofUNMandaddressedamajorproblemwithinourUniversity(L.O#1).This
assignmenthelpeddevelopmyrhetoricalanalysiswhiledevelopingprofessionalanalysisasI
hadtoputitintoletterformwhileusingastylethatwouldconvincehimthattheproblemofthe
lackofconsistentWiFiaroundcampuswasoneworthaddressing.Usingagiveandtakestyle
ofwritingIpresentedthestrengthsoftheUniversityunderPresidentFrank,butexemplifiedthat
wecouldbeevenstrongerwiththeadditionofreliableinternetseeingasthemajorityofschool

worknowadayscanbedonewithaninternetutility,orisdonetotallyonlineleaveslittleexcuse
foratieroneresearchuniversitytobeplaguedwithspottyinternetconnectivity.ThenextthingI
hadtodothroughanalysisofarhetoricalsituationwascreatearidesharingapplicationdesigned
forcollegestudentsandothermembersofthecommunity.Thissituationrequiredmore
componentsthanjustasingleanalysisofarhetoricalsituationandcomposingadocument
aroundit.Ihadtofindinformationtobeabletocompeteinamarket,andIhadtoevaluateitfor
legitimacyandusefulness(L.O#2).

UberandLyft,bothpopularapplications,dominatetheridesharingmarket.Tocombatthis,
Angelo(mypartner)andIhadtoseekoutandusereputableevidencethatisgoingtohelp
marketourownapplication.Ourapplicationincludedstudentdiscountsandcertaintime
discountsbecauseasitturnedoutUberdoesnothaveanoverabundanceofit,andendsupbeing
ontheexpensivesideofthemarketdependingonthecityandtimeofday.Thecreationofa
successfulappisdependentonusertrust,andnotonlyonhowconvincingitis.Infact,thereis
littleconvincingthatcanbeusedinthisapplicationasridesharingorinmorecommonterms,
payingtogetintoastrangerscar,isnotcommonlyknowntobesafe.Ourapplicationandthe
informationweincludedneededtobeabletogiveoffthepenumbraofsafety,thatwasour
methodofrhetoric.Thus,theinformationthatwepresentedwascenteredaroundhowsafewe
are,insteadofhowsafewetelltheconsumerweare.Thisdocumentwasnotveryliketheothers
thatwehadtocompose,itwasanapplicationforiPhone.Thisassignmenttookusintothereal
meatofcompositioninvariousmodeswithdifferenttypesofdocuments(LO#3/5).

Ourapplicationconsistedofvariouspages,insteadofparagraphs.Variouspictures,insteadof
graphs.ThiswasanassignmentthatchallengedmeinthatIneededtotransformmyprevious
usageofrhetorictoconvincesomeoneofatopicathand,toabusinessstandpointthatcreateda
passivelyconvincingcompanyandproduct.Thisideaofacompanydidnotstopatan
application,butratherexpandedintotheCoolAdvocatesforAirConditioning.CAACforshort,
wasacompanythatIhadtocomposewithagroupofindividuals.Theworkthatwasdonefor
thisprojectweredrasticallydifferent,rangingfromawebsitetoavideopresentation.Totouch
onthevideopresentation,itwasonethathadtobeeasytoview.Wetookourstandardand
potentiallyevendryproposal,andturneditintoaninteractivevideothattoldtheworldwhyair
conditioningshouldbearight,andwhywearethecompanytomakeithappen.Tobeengaging,
audioandvisualshadtobepresentwithinthevideo.Thechoiceofwhatvisualswereincluded
cameintothepresentationofourproposal(L.O#4),asifthepicturesweretoodistracting,the
viewerwouldnotpayattentiontothewordsortotheaudiothatispresent.Iftheviewercould
notbaskinthewholepresentation,heorshewouldnotfeelthesameneedtodonate,whichis
important.Whilethetopicathand,electricairconditioningbecomingaright,maybeconceived
assillytosome,itwasanissuethatourcompanywasverypassionateabout,andasaresultof
thiswehadtomakeaseriousbutfunpresentation.Ifwecameacrossasaparody,thenwhat
wouldwegetdone?Littleifanything.Notmanypeoplewoulddonatetheirmoneytoacause
thatisnotanactualcause,entertainmentisallovertheinternetandisoftenfree.Makingthis
issueseriouswasalargepartofbeingabletomakethisproposaleffective,aswehadtoidentify
thehumanitarianaudienceandthenfromtherebeabletotouchonwhatisimportant.The
inclusionofglobalwarmingasatopicbecameastrongpointforourcompanytomakeasitisa

veryrealissuethathasaneffectonallofus.Couldyouimagineanincreasingglobalclimateon
theequatorwithnoairconditioningorcoolingmechanism?Thateffectiveargumentisthereality
foralotofpeople.

Therehavebeenvarioustypesofassignmentsthatwereassigned.Therewasanentiregroup
proposalinwhichIworkedwiththreeotherpeopletocomposeaproposaltomakeair
conditioningaright.Inanothercase,Iworkedwithapartnertocreateanapp,andfinallyI
workedbymyselftocreateananalyticalreportaimedatexplainingtoastubborngroupof
individualswhyastrategyfailed(L.O#3).Workingwithothersissomethingthatanyonecould
bepooratdoing,inmanycasesgreatindividualworkersstruggletoworkingroups(think
Congress).Ourstrategiestocomposedocumentsendeduphavingasomewhatclashofwriting
style,butallowedforworktobedoneefficiently.Itookituponmyselftoorganizethe
documentsandgetthepartstogetheronamacroscalewhiledoingmyownpart.Ratherthantry
andfindtimesforeveryonetobeabletopresentourproposalonvideo,wedecidedtoallocate
smallpartsofeachproposalandthenhaveoneofuspresentitinthevideo.Thisstrategyallowed
ustobeabletofreelycomposeoursectionandprovidesomeunitytoourproposal,whilestill
interpretinghowourproposalshouldbeimplementedthroughonevoice.Asimilarstrategywas
employedwiththeapplicationthatAngeloandIcreatedaswewouldallocateworkseparately
ratherthaninunity.Althoughbecausetherewasonlytwoofus,therewasmoreworkdoneasa
groupwiththetimethatwasallocatedtoustoworkinclass.Ourapphadamuchmoretied
togetherfeel,asiftherewasoneauthor,thanthelargegroupprojectastherewerenotonlyfewer
voicesbutaunifyingvoice.Onthepolarendofthesecompositions,wastheanalyticalreport.

Thisreportwascompletelyindividualandallowedformorecreativityasitwasatthemercyof
thewriter.Asaresultofthis,mypaperhadamuchdifferentstructureandusageofvisualsthan
inpreviousprojectsbecauseIuseimagesinconjunctiontotellapointIammentioningin
writingwithadifferentview.Forinstance,whenaddressingthedifferencesbetweenClintonand
TrumpralliesIincludedpicturesoftherallywithoutdirectlymentioningthepictures.Ina
previousstandardessaypriortothisclass,Ididnotorganizemydocumentswiththesevisual
separations(L.O#4).

CreatingdocumentsthatarevisuallyaestheticwasaportionofwritingthatIwasnotpreviously
familiarwith.Inmyanalyticalpaper,Iincludedmetasectionsandindividualtopicswithinthe
bodyandannotatedthemdifferently.Myconclusionwasdifferentlylabeledthanmysectionon
electionsandenthusiasm.Withtheseseparations,thereadercanspendmuchlessenergytrying
todiscernbetweenvariouspiecesofinformation,andmoretimeonunderstandingand
interpretingtheinformationforthepurpose.Inthisanalyticalpaper,Ialsoincludedsidebyside
comparisonsofralliestoexemplifythedifferencebetweentheenthusiasmthateachcandidate
hadgarneredthroughoutthe20monthelectioncycle.Inpreviouspapers,mycomparisonswould
onlybedonethroughtheuseofwordsandnumberswithlittlevisualcuestohelpthereader
understandthemagnitudeoftheissueathand.Presentationofinformationanddocumentation
becameespeciallyimportantduringthedevelopmentoftheCoolAdvocatesforAir
Conditioningswebsite.Websiteshaveanunsaidruleofneedingtobevisuallyappealingin
ordertoencourageindividualstoreadonandenjoylookingatthewebsite.Howcansomeone
sellaproductwhentheconsumerwontevenreadwhatthecompanyisabout?Wellinourcase,

wewerenotacompanythatwassellingaproduct,butthepremisestillholdsthatweneededto
stayvisuallyappealinginorderforanindividualtotakeourcompanyseriously.TheresumeI
createdwasdifferentthantherestofthesepapersastherewerenoimagesIcouldinclude;I
couldonlyuselineandsectionseparationtocreateavisuallyappealingdocument.

Intotality,Ianalyzedalotofsituations,andIcreatedalotofvisuallyappealingdocuments.This
wasdrasticallydifferentthananyotherdocumentthatIcreatedaspreviouslyIreliedonmy
abilitytoseparateinformationtocreateadocumentthatwasinformationallyeasytounderstand
insteadofusingvisualstoseparateinformation.ThecoverletterIpostedalongwithmyresume
wasmuchmoreakintomypreviousiterationsofwritingastherewerenoimages,andIwas
directlyconvincinganindividualoftakinganaction(hiringme).Inmyanalyticalpaper,I
combinedallofthestylesofwritingthroughoutthecourseintoonemajorassignmentthattook
myprevioususageofwritingintoaccount.Iusedvisualstohelpinthepresentationof
information,whilefindingandevaluatinginformationforitspossibleusesandlegitimacy.My
topicofwritingsurroundedapoliticalissue,andasmostpeopleareawarethereisalotoffalse
prophetsofpoliticsontheinternet.IusedRealClearPoliticstoaccuratelyfindpolling
informationandFiveThirtyEighttoveteachsourceasNateSilverhasapreviousrecordof
havingaccuratepredictionsandstatisticalanalysis.ThroughoutthepaperIusedsectional
organizationsuchasfromtheresumeIcreated,visualorganizationfromourvideoproposal,and
rhetoricalanalysisfrommyothersemestersofEnglishclass.Igottocreatethevisual
