ON LOAD CHANGER

The on-load tap changers will be based on the Dr.Jansen" principle including a load selector
with switch and a high speed resistor type tap changer.It will be powered, with manual and
electrical local control and remote control.The on load tap change will be a regulator from the
manufacturer MR Germany of M type.
The on-load tap changer will be in compliance with the IEC 60214 and IEC 60542
recommendations. The transfer switch will be installed in the transformer tank, accessible by
man hole and placed in a specific compartment, independent of transformer oil and will have a
specific sub-section in an oil retainer.The internal protection will be carried out by control of oil
flow and gas gauge.Moreover, a discharge valve with trip contact (decompression valve) will be
installed directly on the tap changer.Trip switches will be associated with the thermal protection
devices of the on-load tap changer properly and in adequate capacity to operate the alarm relay
contacts of the entire associated relay chain.
The transfer switch compartment will be equipped with a suction pipe linked to a purge valve
and sampling valves.The head of tap changer will be equipped with a conduit linked to Buchholz
relays of the main tank to avoid gas pockets below the head of the tap changer outside the
transfer switch.
The supply volage for the motor will be 127 Vdc.
The power transformer will remain constant at all the taps.The on-load tap changer will
dimensioned for the maximum loading current of the transformer (i.e. all the load cases specified
in the IEC 60354 recommendation, till 180% of the maximum nominal current of tap)
The motor and all the auxiliary equipmets of tap changers will be incorporated in an aluminium
enclosure capable of withstanding bad weather.All the external mobile parts of the enclosure will
be protected over their entire length.
The motor will be accessible without removal of equipment and auxiliary cables.
The end of travel interrupters, in addition to the mechanical stops, or other approved device, will
be provided to prevent the overflow to the extreme positions.
The following equipments will be installed in the control cabinet.
- a motor with protection equipment;
- an operation counter ;
- 2 push buttons for local control, increase and decrease the gradients step by step with the
locking capability
- a limit switch
- mechanical steps at end of travel;
- a mechanical position indicator ("1" refers to the position with the maximum voltage) mounted
in the switch cabinet and the door closed and visible
- A local/remote switch
- Auxiliary relays
- Monitoring relays of the voltage for the control circuits;
Circuit-breakers for each additional supply;
- A heating device controlled by hygrostat;
- A heating device controlled by thermostat
- A cable lamp with switch (operating with opening of the door)

- Connection terminals in ceramic for the connection of solid conductors until 10 mm10% of
spare terminals shall be provided for each terminal block,
- A manual control operated by handle
- A setting indicator wheel for signaling of remote position and indicator for parallel operation
control (potentiometer and contacts); (Auxiliary contacts to identify and transmit remote each
position of the tap changer will be available.In addition, the manufacturer shall provide a logical
device to retrieve at each change of sockets the socket number and the high and low alarm outlet
socket.This device must be compatible with the system of control of the substation by
communicating in IEC 61850).
- Additional limit switches
- A spare plug for low voltage 10 Aac;
- A plate indicating all the control circuits and all the connections, fixed inside the door;
- padlocks or locks for the front door and push buttons.
A pocket to keep the diagrams will be fixed on the inside of the door of the enclosure.
It will be possible to control the tap changer by:
- Manual operated by moving handle in case of a default power supply system;
- Remote operation by push button from the local control room;
- Automatic operation controlled by automaton of voltage regulation and operation control
simultaneously
- Remote operation from dispatching center;
and enable:
- Step by step operation with automatic stop after each notch;
- Automatic passage check for central tap.
The tap changer equipment will be designed and constructed in such a manner that the tap
changer switch would not require any maintenance, i.e. the life duration of contacts and
mechanisms shall support 50,000 operations without maintenance.
The devices and the instruments necessary to control remotely from the control room or a local
distribution center as well as connections and control cables leading from the transformers to the
circuits outside and inside the substation are not part of the supply and installation but must be
coordinated with the substation design.
