Each year more people are affected by eating disorders, and there's a growing need for
Registered Dietitians (RD) to be qualified in this particular field. Were interested in this
certification as a specialty in the realm of medical dietetics. Clinicians passionate about helping
those who struggle with eating disorders could consider getting certified. An RD with this
additional certification will be more marketable to employers and consumers in need of someone
with experience and knowledge with disordered eating. To gain a Certified Eating Disorder
Registered Dietitian (CEDRD) you need to first have a Bachelor of Science with a year of
dietetic internship. The internship can be completed with or without a Masters Degree, and you
must pass the dietetics registration exam and remain active with the CEU.
After becoming an RD, you must apply to the International Association of Eating
Disorders Program, (IAEDP) which has an application fee of $150. The traditional certification
route for registered dietitians requires 2,500 hours of supervised patient care that consists of a
minimum of 1875 hour of face to face client contact. You must attend 6 hours of seminars,
conferences, or webinars for Body Image/ weight and food issues, abnormal
psychology/addictions, counseling/psychotherapy. IAEDP also requires you to complete core
courses of Introduction to Eating Disorder, Treatment Aspects of Eating Disorders, Medical
Aspects of Eating Disorders, Nutritional Guidelines for Treating Eating Disorders. Each course is

sold separately for $100 for each course. You must review 1,500 case studies of patient
treatment, and have recommendation letters.
Upon completing the coursework for IAEDP, you may sit for the IAEDP Certification
Exam, which has an associated fee of $75 to administer the exam. If you pass the exam, you
become a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian. The organization requires a copy of a
resume or CV submitted but no dietetics portfolio is required to apply or obtain a Certified
Eating Disorders Registered Dietitian. The certification is renewable every two years and is a
$150 fee for renewing. Over the course of those two years, the IAEDP requires you to maintain
20 hours of education directly in the field in eating disorders. There is a renewal form that must
be filled out and submitted before each 2-year period is up. Forms can be found at the IAEDP
website and printed to be filled out and mailed in with a check to the association.
