Activity 1: Decision
Making

Activity/Procedure/Stage
(Put the expressions on the board )
Before the class began, my students were already talking
about the election. So when I got started, I just asked them
to tell me what they just discussed. Then we worked on
some vocabulary like presidential election, president-elect.
And we even talked about the election process in the US.

1.1. Pre-Stage:
Before the election, I heard Americans joking about what SS-T
that they would do if Trump won the election. Do you know
what Im saying? It has something to do with Canada (put
Canada on the board), their northern neighbor. Yes, they
said they would move to Canada if Trump won. In fact, do
you know that Canadas immigration website crashed last
night? Who knows if it was really because too many
Americans were checking how to move to Canada. So now,
let me ask you. If I were an American and I felt deeply
troubled by Trumps victory, based on what weve just
discussed (pointing at Canada), what kind of advice would
you give me?

1.

You probably have heard some of these expressions.

So lets learn how to use these expressions to give
advice in an appropriate way. Can you use these
expressions to suggest that I should move to Canada?
direct

Should
Could
Why dont
you
If I were you

indirect

Boardwork
You should move to Canada
You could move to Canada
Why dont you move to
Canada?
If I were you, Id move to
Canada.
If I were you, I wouldnt
stay.

SS-T

Direct

You should/could move to Canada

Why dont you move to Canada?
-Questions as a polite strategy
Can I have a cheeseburger?
vs. I want a cheeseburger.

Indirect

If I were you, Id move to Canada.

If I were you, I wouldnt stay.
1. were/was
-Do you notice something weird
here?
-in terms of the tense
-past tense for future
2. negative
3. contraction

Questions?
Actually there are many other expressions for giving
advice, but lets just try to master these expressions for
now.
1.2. During Stage:
Let me ask you something. If you dont have a single
problem in your life that makes you feel troubled, can you
raise you hand? Obviously, everyone has their own trouble.
Heres some good news for you. Were going to give each
other advice on our problems and hopefully you will find a
wonderful solution to your problem.
1. Instructions
Im going to give each of you a sheet of paper. And Id
like you to write down ONE problem that you have, just
ONE. I know it can get really personal, so we will do it
anonymously. (What does anonymous mean?) So NO
NAMES on the paper. Just write down ONE problem you
have at the moment. And if you dont feel comfortable
sharing your problem, just make one up
2. Modeling
For example, on my paper, Id put Trump is going to be
the president and hes gonna ruin my life. What should I
do?
QUESTIONS?
When youre done, fold the paper in half and give it to me
3. Instructions

SS-T

Now Im going to give each of you one problem. And Id

like you to write down a piece of advice using one of the
expressions weve just talked about.
4. Modeling
For example, for my problem, you could write down Why
dont you move to Canada?
Questions?
If youre done, fold the paper in half again and pass it to
the person on your right. And now give advice on the new
problem and this time, try using a different expression. I
want a different expression, okay?

Now were going to look at the advice you gave each

other. Id like you to form a group of three. Three people in
a group. Each group will get 3 problems and read and
discuss all the advice on each problem. Then, Id like you to
choose one piece of advice that you think is most helpful or
interesting. And later on, you will have to report to the
class and explain why you think its most helpful. So each
group member will be responsible for one problem and
report back to the class. (Put helpful/interesting and Why
on the board.)
Questions
6. SS work in groups
7. SS report back to the class and T gives corrective
feedback
1.3 Post-Stage:
1. Each S tells the class ONE THING they learned today
(Walk away from the board) Youve done a great job.
Dont look at the board. Now, Id like each of you to give
me advice on how I can lose weight. Use ONE expression
you just learned.
2. Let SS know there will be another speaking exercise on
giving advice in the next class
