MOUNT VERNON

COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

Gary S. OMalley, Ph.D.
Superintendent

December 12, 2016

Dear Mount Vernon Community School Board:
Effective July 1, 2017, I will retire as superintendent of the Mount
Vernon Community School District.
I announce today to provide the school board sufficient time to
select its next educational leader. I am very proud of our
accomplishments, grateful for our time together, and humbled by
the opportunity to serve as your leader.
How did it get so late so soon? Like Dr. Seuss, I wonder how fortythree years as an educator have come and gone so quickly. You
start out trying to make a difference for others and you end up
discovering a difference has been made in you. I have been
blessed with the opportunity to learn life lessons through teaching
and to demonstrate leadership through service. I have no regrets.
I praise my colleagues for bringing joy, excitement, and
inspiration to the challenge of learning. I appreciate the energy
and work ethic of students and the generous support of parents.
Mary and I wish to thank this wonderful community for its
kindness, generosity, and good will.
The people of Mount Vernon are proud of this school district. Let it
be said that we were caretakers of this legacy, working together
to strengthen the Mount Vernon Community School District. We
are Mount Vernon!
Sincerely,
Promoting Excellence in Academics, Arts, and Athletics
