Gun Control
Have you ever wondered what the world would be like
without guns? Well, most people do not want to know. People have
all different kinds of thoughts on gun control. Some people support
the idea that guns should be banned in the United States and
others think that there is not a problem with guns being used in the
United States. Guns should never be banned from the United
States, even though various people think they should.

Crime is one of the biggest reasons that people feel like the
United States needs gun control. In 2008 alone about 16,272 lives
were lost due to murders that were committed in the United States
and 10,886 were committed with firearms (Just Facts). Data from
the United States Department of Justice stated that 5,340,000
violent crimes were committed in 2008. Crimes that include simple
aggravated a s s a u l t s , sexual assaults, and murders. From these
crimes almost 436,000 or eight percent were committed by people
with visible weapons (Just Facts). At the current rate, almost one
person out of 285 Americans will be murdered. Out of 18,000
prison inmates that are serving time, thirty percent of state
offenders and thirty five percent of federal offenders carried a
weapon while committing the crime (Just Facts).
People that are pro-gun control are trying to make real life
about the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution of the United States.
Those who are trying to limit guns say that the 2nd Amendment
only applies to militias or collective defense (Current Event). T he
s e co nd a me nd me nt s ta t e s " A well-regulated Militia being
necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to
keep and bear arms shall not be infringed . T h e s e people a r e
stating that there should not be guns other than those designed for
hunting or sport shooting available to the people. Many people
really would like that idea. (Overview).
People that think gun control is going to be beneficial for the
United States, are stating that the crime accounts would go down if

gun control was in place. They are saying that a gun is the number
one thing that is involved in crimes and murders. Thats why these
types of people would like to have gun control in the United
States.

Although there are a lot of proponents for gun control, that

also means there are a great deal of opponents as well. People who
are against gun control love their guns for many different reasons.
Although people for gun control say guns are used mostly for the
commission of crime, which is simply not true.
In the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution
it says A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of
a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall
not be infringed ". The Second Amendment was put in place not
just for ordinary home defenses such as burglars and other home
invaders but specifically y to guarantee that the United States
could never be overcome or taken over by any other military
power whether it be foreign or domestic. For example if the five
branches of the United States military were beaten and taken
over by a foreign country, the only other option for national
defense would be the civilians of the U.S. themselves. Civilians
could not protect themselves in that kind of situation if gun
control was in place. Thats one of many reasons why gun control
should not be in place (10 Arguments).
Gun control will not stop people from gaining access to guns

in the United States. When someone is so messed up in the head to

go and kill somebody, they are not going to care if they can carry
guns or not. Crime will not decrease because guns are banned. I t
will just make people find another way to do the same harmful
things. It happens all the time, in 1977 handguns were banned
from the United Kingdom after a shooting occurred at an
elementary school. Just because the United Kingdom banned guns
the number of homicides did not go down they increased (LAmpo).
A gun is not the only way to hurt or kill people. Also criminals are
not afraid to break the laws so gun control will not stop them from
having guns. Just like drugs are illegal in the United States but you
can still buy drugs from almost anywhere in the United States. For
an example people that the gun control act will affect are the
people who did everything right such as buying and registering
guns correctly. But people out there that got their guns from the
black market, the government will never know they have guns.
Gun control would leave the citizens of the United States that are
good and use guns in the right way vulnerable to all the people
that use guns for the wrong reasons. (If You Believe)
Not only does gun control affect the crime and peoples
rights. It will affect the economy in so many ways. Because guns
bring so much money into the government. People need realize
how much money they will lose if guns are taken away. Gun and
ammo revenue is about a $6 BILLION dollar industry in the United
States. Plus ninety-five percent of guns are made in the United
States and sold around the world (Sanburn). That is not the only

way it will hurt the economy. Also all the money brought in from
hunting game will be lost. Just by there being gun control in
Colorado it is hurting many local business that have to do with
outdoor recreation activities and putting people out of business.
Towns in Colorado that revolve around hunting and fishing are
experiencing the effects on the economy from gun control. Many
businesses in these towns had to close their doors making 600
people jobless and losing over 85 million dollars in revenue
(Hopper).
Opponents against gun control know their rights and how the
Second Amendment works. People that do not want gun control are

not criminals they are just people that love their guns for reasons
like protecting themselves, hunting and shooting sports.
People that are for gun Control dont know everything they
need to know about the situation. They just think if we got rid of
guns the United States would be better place. At first glance that
honestly sounds safer but it is really not.
Gun control will probably be an ongoing debate for a while.

Both sides of gun control have very good reasons on why or why
not the United States should have guns, such as crimes rates and
money from guns. The United States should stick to the Second
Amendment Guns should never be banned from the United
States, even know people think they should!
