FROM THE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

Again, this year I decided to organise a Wyndham Whispers for December.
There have been so many outstanding achievements and events that have
occurred since the last newsletter.
I can proudly report that three of our students, Sally Clark, Jemmah
McMaster and Tom Johnson have been selected for Art Express.
This is an outstanding achievement as almost ten thousand students submit
bodies of work. 228 students statewide were selected for Art Express and we
have three from Wyndham College. Congratulations to Sally, Jemmah and
Tom and to our fabulous Visual Arts Faculty.
And for Dance Callback we have four nominations- Gemma Deering,
Madeline Kirby, Yvette Touma and Emily Western.
Another outstanding success has been the three students who received the
Victor Chang Science Award. They are Wozaila Arefin, Aidan Bath and Liam
Turner.

Our Celebration Assembly for Class of 2016 to be held on 15 February 2017.

We recently welcomed 430 year 10 (Year 11 2017) students to Wyndham and
it was great to see so many parents at the Orientation Evening for the families
of these young people. A reminder to our parents/caregivers that we are a
uniform school school shirt has a school logo.

DECEMBER 2016

From 2017 onward the school trousers are now black in colour, however black shorts are optional and
permitted in Terms 1 and 4 ONLY. Year 12, 2017 can continue to wear the grey trousers and shorts or
they can purchase the new black trousers from the uniform shop. However, please remember all Year
12 students require trousers for Graduation in Term 3. Please ensure this part of the uniform is
obtained by Graduation. To assist parents in ensuring they can be ready for 2017 please see opening
times for the uniform shop later in this edition of Whispers.
Over three hundred students recently attended the Class of 2016 Formal at Rosehill Race Course. The
evening was a great success and many thanks to Natasha Scott, Chris Minol and Vanessa Wickens for
organising.
A reminder to the Class of 2016, the informal morning tea is on Friday 16 December at 9.30am. We
hope to see as many Year 12 as possible.
We recently celebrated the achievements of our current Year 11 at the annual presentation day. I was
pleased to see so many outstanding results and also the many parents/caregivers who took time out of
their busy schedules to help celebrate with us. This year we recognised several of our staff, with the
Nirimba Learning Community Award. These awards are open to all staff from Blacktown Boys,
Blacktown Girls, Mitchell, The Hills Sports, Quakers Hill, Riverstone and Seven Hills High Schools and
Wyndham College.
We had 7 staff successful. They were for Excellent Contribution to School Achievement: Kumie Pather.
For Excellence in Teaching: Dimitri Papanis. Excellent Contribution by SASS Staff: Ruth Graham. For
Excellent Contribution to School Programs: Maree Crowne. For Excellence in Early Career Teaching:
Natasha Scott. For Outstanding Educational Leadership: Dallas Richmond and Classa Martinuzzi.
Congratulations to all these staff.
We are fast coming to the end of the year and I hope the Year 12 class of 2017 has started organising
their assessment schedules/major works for next year.

DECEMBER 2016

FROM THE YEAR 11 DEPUTY

At the Year 11 Presentation Assembly, I delivered the following address. For those who were unable to
attend I include it here and endorse my best wishes to all for the holiday period and the new year.
In your senior commitment booklet which you received at the start of this term, there is a quote from a
former president of the United States, John F. Kennedy. He said: Once you say youre going to settle for
second, thats what happens to you in life.
The wonderful young men and women who we are recognising here today have obviously not done
that. They have taken advantage of the opportunities offered to them and have excelled in various
aspects of college life. Congratulations to all of the recipients today.
However, that does not mean that the door is closed to people who are not receiving recognition here
today. In fact, it should be an incentive for you to try that much harder, so that your name can be called
out next year as being the recipient of an award.
Ive known you from orientation last year, to your first day of Year 11, to today, when I look out at a fine
group of young men and women, with whom Im proud to be associated.
Im not going to say that it has all been easy sailing though. Quite a number of students who started
with you are no longer with us, for various reasons. I got totally OVER the number of students who
wanted to change courses and classes, though tried to remain patient and sympathetic to your causes.
(Mind you, the window for changing has closed!)
When I look at you today however, and am thrilled by your sense of pride and achievement, it makes me
remember why I have been in the teaching profession for over 30 years.
Its because of YOU.
A teacher has to be a bit egocentric to perform every day, but even the most egocentric get the most
satisfaction out of your achievement and development as young men and women.
As we approach the end of your first term of HSC studies, it is timely to remember that you are now a
quarter of the way through your HSC year and, believe me, the next three terms will go by at lightning
speed, and before you know it, you will be sitting for your HSC exams. So to all the recipients today,
keep up the good work and try even harder. To those who have missed out, ensure that between now
and the end of Term 3 next year, you increase your efforts and commitment and make every post a
winner.
As the character played by the late, great Robin Williams said to his students in Dead Poets Society
Carpe Diem Seize the Day!
I look forward to working with you all again next year and wish everyone a safe and happy holiday
period and a really positive new year for the class of 2017.
David Macleod-Jones Deputy Principal

WELFARE UPDATE
Crossroads Day will occur on 14 December, Wednesday of Week 10 called Risky Business. It will
include a presentation from Jonathan Beninca, a motivational speaker, who discusses risks and
consequences using his personal experiences to highlight the importance of young people making

informed decisions. Jonathan lost his forearm and lower leg in a serious train accident. He is hard hitting and
relates extremely well to young people.
Wyndham staff will represent sessions on Positive Relationships, the NSW Family Planning presenters will run
sessions on Sexual Health and staff from the Sarina Russo Apprenticeships will run sessions on the Guide You
program which is a Career Planning tool. Students will receive information during their connect sessions about
the structure of the day.
This is all covered in the Crossroads payment that most families have paid at the beginning of the year. Please
ensure your payment has been made and if financial difficulties are faced please remember to contact the front
office for Student assistance forms.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jeff Smith for all his efforts as part of the Welfare Team. He has
organised the Recreation Day that is occurring on Tuesday 13th December and has students going to a variety of
venues to celebrate the end of the year with the staff.
On behalf of the Welfare team, which will now be called the Well-Being Team, I would like to wish everyone a
relaxing and safe holiday. We look forward to returning with renewed energy for 2017.
Sue Beamer Head Teacher Welfare
FROM THE COLLEGIATE DEPUTY
This last term has been a busy one for Nirimba Collegiate Year 10 students. The term started with Collegiate Year
10 RoSA Examinations for English, Mathematics, Science and Geography/History. Staff from all four Collegiate
schools came together for corporate marking of these exams. This provided great professional development for
staff and a chance to discuss programs and teaching strategies.
Year 10 then completed BOSTES All My Own Work modules in preparation for their senior studies. The All My
Own Work program takes students through expected academic practices and provides students with information
allowing them to apply the principles and practices of good scholarship.
The next Year 10 event was Orientation Day and the Parent Orientation Evening. It was great to see the high
levels of participation, despite the extremely hot conditions on the day and evening.
Year 10 students were invited to participate in several preparation and induction days at Wyndham College.
David Ryan and Dimitri Papanis engaged students in the English Advanced Induction Day. Students participated in
a variety of activities to give them insight into the course content and texts set for study, familiarise them with a
variety of resources and modes of teaching and an opportunity to enrich the skills, knowledge and understanding
expected in the Stage 6 course.
Denis and the Mathematics faculty provided students preparing to study Mathematics with 4 intensive days of
Mathematics. They covered a variety of topics, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, coordinate geometry
and surds.
This year, the Social Sciences faculty conducted a trial Im On My Way day. This day was designed to provide
transition support for students from Riverstone High School who have selected to do any Social Sciences courses
in 2017. The success of the day will see the program extended to include all Collegiate schools next year.
Finally, I would like to thank all the staff across the Nirimba Collegiate who work tirelessly to support our students
to achieve their best. Without their dedication, hard work and commitment, many of the programs we run to
support the successful transition of students from Stage 5 to Stage 6 would not be possible.
I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday and I look forward to taking on my new role as Wyndham College
Deputy Principal in 2017.

FROM THE LIBRARIANS DESK

It is that time of year when we ask all students to please return any overdue library books. Our
Christmas display is up and we encourage students to take a photo with Santa before the end of Term.
The Library is also running the annual Toys and Tucker appeal where we ask students to donate food or
toys for families who would otherwise go without at Christmas time. Please give generously and bring
donations to the library.
Our Library Assistant Rosalie Antill is retiring at the end of this year and we wish her all the best in the
next stage of her life. Rose has worked in the Nirimba library from the day that Wyndham College
opened and will be missed greatly by our staff and students.
Finally I remind students that the holidays are a great time to read. Whether you want to be a lawyer, an
architect, a business leader, a store owner, or a stay-at-home mum, having grounding in good literature
and a basic understanding of the sweep of human history and culture provides the best foundation for
future learning and for being able to interact well with other human beings. I encourage you to visit
our library and borrow some books to read over the holidays and visit your local public library to check
out what's happening there over the Christmas break.
We look forward to seeing you in the Library in 2017.

FROM THE MATHS FACULTY

THE MATHS DEPARTMENT AT WYNDHAM COLLEGE HAVE FINALLY FLIPPED
We live in an age of technology and our students eagerly embrace whats new. The Mathematics
Department at Wyndham College want to harness these opportunities to improve teaching and
learning with a new and revolutionary technique, The Flipped Classroom.
Traditionally, students are taught the understanding and problem solving skills using a particular
concept. Students practise these skills, ask questions to develop their understanding of the concept
and their homework is to consolidate their newly acquired skills. Unfortunately, some students have
not developed the necessary skills, in class, to adequately complete their homework and consolidate
their learning. The Flipped Classroom reverses this procedure. Students homework is to view a video
that teaches the understanding and problem solving. This is ideal to allow students time to master a
skill at their own pace. Students then consolidate learned material in class with the teacher available to
answer any queries. The Flipped Classroom promotes maximum use of class time for the students. It is
also ideal for revision and for absent students to catch up on work missed.
The success of The Flipped Classroom is the quality of the videos. The MathsOnline Program provides
professional, high quality, concise explanations, easy-to-follow layout and the availability of additional
support materials. Videos of approximately 5 minutes are available covering every aspect of most
syllabuses.
The cost of private tuition is rapidly increasing and impacts on families with many children. Our
MathsOnline Program will be available to all College students as a free trial for a limited time. The
MathsOnline program has 1400 video tutorials to evaluate its worth for all members of the family,
including parents. During the trial period, teachers will require their students to view the video
tutorials and trial The Flipped Classroom technique. Evaluation of this teaching and learning strategy
will determine if students find this method valuable and choose it over the traditional teaching of
concepts.
The cost of the MathsOnline Program that usually retails for $197 per person per year is only $12 for a
full year.
The condition of this extremely low fee is that it is compulsory for all students who are studying
mathematics at Wyndham College to pay the $12. Also, it will be a requirement for each student to
participate in The Flipped Classroom teaching technique. For Year 12 students this fee will ensure they
have access to the MathsOnline Program for the remainder of this year, up to and including their 2017
HSC examinations. Excellent value.
Parents can access the program with their childs login and enter their email address in their childs
profile and then they will receive weekly updates of their childs progress.
Thank you for supporting the mathematics faculty to improve teaching and learning at Wyndham
College.

It was a busy few weeks for Visual Arts! Two interesting excursions in two weeks.
We all had a great time and the students approached both days with excitement and enthusiasm.
Cockatoo Island is the perfect location for students to heighten their artistic abilities. The students

SCULPTURES BY THE SEA

Sculptures by the Sea gave students the unique opportunity to see site specific works of art as they
walked along the coastline from Bondi to Tamarama.
Our support unit actively engaged in all the activities of the day; photographing both their
surroundings as well as their favourite sculptures. Both excursions allowed students to further
improve their artistic practice and they are all excited to apply these new skills to the artworks they
are creating in their classrooms.

On November 24 and 25 Wyndham College hosted the Science Laboratory Assistants Metropolitan
Network or SLAMN conference.
The conferences key note speaker this year was Jake Stalker former Wyndham College vice-Captain
2012 and founder of 1Step1Life Charity in Cambodia. Jake spoke on his experiences with mental health
and establishing a charity in a developing country. It was truly inspirational!
Over 170 school Labbies attended from DoE, Independent and Catholic Schools this conference for
their annual professional development workshops.
These workshops included all aspects of science: Chemistry, Physics, Senior Science, Biology and an
Agriculture workshop with Cranebrook High School Alpacas.
Participants also had the opportunity of visiting WSU The Colleges Science Faculty to try Uni student
for a Day in both Chemistry and Physics workshops.
Wyndham Staff were very willing to help with whatever job was required of them whilst Year 12
students also participated by looking after the sound, photographing workshops and also catering for the
event. Deb Dunn and Brendan Hewitt worked tirelessly with their hospitality classes to ensure everything
ran smoothly and the menu was very much appreciated by the participants.
A big thank you goes to Karen Smith for her continued support and the committee are looking forward to
a bigger and better conference in 2017.

GIRLS CODING
CLUB

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) have been identified as key areas by educators across
Australia that will drive future jobs growth. The skills taught in these foundation subjects, such as coding, will
allow future generations to remain digitally adaptive and increase Australia's international competitiveness.
This term 15 female students comprising both staff and students participated in a pilot Girls Coding Club.
Experience at Wyndham has shown that our girls generally shy away from STEM subjects especially Software
Design and Development. The aim of the club is to promote STEM with a particular focus on coding. The club
provided an opportunity for the participants to build self-confidence and challenge themselves with problem
solving thats associated with coding. The participants were introduced to the programming language Scratch,
using which they created various working programs associated with the theme social media. The club met
weekly on a Wednesday at recess and worked on a different task each week.
The program culminated with a visit to UTS for Women in Engineering and IT hands on Day and at the last
session, a showcase of their efforts and a certificate presentation by the principal Karen Smith.

University of Technology Women in Engineering and IT Day

On Tuesday November 29th the Girls Coding Club along with teachers Kumie Pather, Trudy Say, David
Pawley and Samantha Murdoch, attended an interactive day run by the University of Technology,
Sydney. The day aimed to encourage young women to pursue careers in technology, engineering and
information technology and give them hands on experience with the kinds of skills they might need. 21 st
century learner skills featured heavily, with problem solving, creativity and digital literacy taking centre
stage. The students participated in workshops that ranged from building a prosthetic limb from found
objects such as rubber bands and plastic forks, solving energy problems through looking at renewable
energy, programming robots to navigate a map in the Mars Rover workshop and building a simple game
that allowed them to use the skills they have learned in coding club. The feedback from the students was
excellent and it was clear that the practical activities had challenged and engaged them in a field that is
often male dominated. The students were able to hear firsthand from UTS students about their
experience studying in these fields as well as from women who have built passionate and successful
careers in technology. The day was an overwhelming success and both teachers and students learned
something new!
Clockwise from top left: members of the coding club attempt to program their robot, the map the robots
needed to navigate, David and Samanthas attempt at the prosthetic arm activity, students work on their
prosthetic arm, David Pawley being excited about engineering. Samantha Murdoch
