Grade 6th

Date 11/5/16
Topic Solving One Step Equations

Content Area Algebra

Instructional Objective:
After completing a lesson on solving one step equations, in groups, students will be able to solve
for the missing variable (x) in an equation using addition, subtraction, multiplication or division.
This assignment will be completed with 80% accuracy based on a teacher answer key.
Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.EE.A.2
Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.EE.A.2.A

Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers.
For example, express the calculation "Subtract y from 5" as 5 - y.
Indicators:
This will be evident when students independently find the value of the missing variable (x) in six
separate equations on an in class worksheet.
For example, x+7=15, x-18=50, x*3=30, x/15=5
Materials:
SMARTboard, AirLinear Wireless Slate, calculator, graphic organizer worksheet, online practice
using the website MathIsFun.
Motivation:
In the beginning of the lesson, students will be given different real world circumstances where
finding a missing variable is necessary. Students will be asked if they can come up with any

examples. Students will be given the following example from the teacher: We can use solving
one step equations to find out what a student needs to get on his next test in order to get a 90% in
his class.
Developmental Procedures:

Teacher will prompt students with questions like, what are real life circumstance that we
would need to find a missing variable? They will be given the example, We can use
solving one step equations to find out what a student needs to get on his next test in order
to get a 90% in his class.

Teacher will complete a PowerPoint lesson on solving one step equations and work
through some problems algebraically on the board. Students will be given a graphic
organizer to follow along with the lesson.

Teacher will show students how to solve one step equations physically using a SMART
Notebook activity.

Teacher will walk around the room using an Airlinear Wireless Slate and will allow some
students from their seat use the slate to complete some problems on the SMARTboard.

Students will work in groups to complete an in class worksheet.

Instructional Strategies:

Discussion: In the beginning of the lesson, students will be asked if they can come up
with real world examples of when they might need to find a missing variable. The teacher
will provide students with more examples.

Direct Instruction: The teacher will present a PowerPoint presentation for the students on
solving one step equations. The teacher will present the students with examples of finding
the missing variable using a SMART Notebook activity. The teacher will then go through

written problems on the SMARTboard will walking around the class using an AirLinear
Slate. The teacher will allow students who would like to participate to use the AirLinear
Slate at their desks to complete problems on the SMARTboard.

Cooperative Learning: Students will work together to complete an in class worksheet on

solving one step equations.

Questioning: Teacher will ask students the following questions: Why is it important that
we can solve for a missing variable? What are real life examples of when we would need
to solve for a missing variable? What step should we talk to solve this problem?

Adaptations:

All directions will be read aloud by the teacher for students who struggle with reading.

The teacher will walk around the room and sit with students who seem to be struggling,
giving them examples and answers to different problems to help them better understand
the concept.

Tier Three students will be paired with Tier One students so that the students who
understand the material can assist the students who are struggling.

Differentiation of Instruction:

The teacher AirLinear Wireless Slate that students use to participate will be used to
engage Kinetic learners and Visual Learners.

The examples in the PowerPoint on the SMARTboard will have different colors to
demonstrate different operations. This will be used to engage Visual learners.

Working together in groups to complete the in class worksheet will be used to engage the
Social Learners.

The worksheet will be used to engage the Common Sense Learners.

Assessment:
Students will be able to solve for the value of the missing variable in an equation using addition
or subtraction after completing the lesson on solving one step equations. Students will then
complete two problems on an exit slip with 80% accuracy.
Independent Practice:
Following the lesson on solving one step equations, students will complete a worksheet. Teacher
will check for mathematical accuracy.
Direct Teacher Intervention:
The student, under direct intervention with the teacher, will play an online instructional game
from the site MathIsFun on solving one step equations during a specific help session.
Academic Enrichment:
The student will come up with real world problems that they can use solving one step equations
for. They will write out this problem algebraically and then solve for the missing variable.
