Lesson Topic: Substance Abuse: Consequences of Tobacco Use

Grade: High School Health (9th-12th)


Date: November 9, 2016
Lesson Objective: The students will have a full understanding of the dangers of
smoking by rotating through four different stations and completing a worksheet with
questions regarding each station to show their mastery of the dangers of smoking
tobacco.
State Standards: 6.3 Analyze the physiological effects of substance use and abuse.
6.4 Identify the psychological effects of substance abuse.
6.9 Discuss how a persons enabling and denial can contribute to abuse of alcohol and
other drugs.
The Students Will Be Able To: Demonstrate an understanding of the four stations that
they will be rotating through: Emphysema Simulation, Swine Look and Feel, Mr. Gross
Mouth, and What Could Happen to Me?
Introduction: Once students come into class and seat themselves into one of the four
stations, we will give a brief description of all the activities. We have been discussing
the negative effects of tobacco on the body for a couple of days so this activity will
reinforce what they have learned with both visual and physical aids and give them a

better understanding of those effects. Students will be given their Smoking Lung Day
worksheet to complete as they rotate through the four stations.
Instruction: Once the students have settled and gotten their names, date, and period
on the Smoking Lung Day worksheet, we will give instructions for each station.
1.) Body Information: They will outline one of the students bodies on a large piece
of paper mounted on the wall. They will then draw a realistic picture of the lungs,
heart, and other body parts affected by tobacco along with a description of those
negative effects. Tomorrow, at the beginning of class, each group will give a brief
presentation and explain their findings.
2.) The Smokers Lungs: Students will perform activities breathing through a straw
to demonstrate how it may feel to have emphysema.
3.) Mr. Gross Mouth: One of the students in the group will act as the teacher and
thoroughly explain the mouth replica with various oral problems shown.
4.) Inflatable Lungs: Students will get to see/feel real swine lungs both inflated and
deflated and both healthy and cancerous. They will also get to see examples of
Tar in a Jar, Phlegm, and a piece of a healthy preserved swine lung.
Questions & Prompts: Before we begin at each station, I will make sure that each
group is performing their activity correctly and address any further questions that they
may have.
Guided Practice: I will walk around to make sure that each group is performing their
activity and that they are answering the questions for each section.

Individual Practice: Students will work on their own and with their group to complete
the questions for each section on their Smoking Lung Day worksheet.
Closure: We will discuss what their thoughts are after completing each station and
address any questions/comments they may have. I will collect their worksheets to
ensure they understood/mastered the activity/material.
Reflection: This was an amazing activity that touched the students on so many levels.
This was a lesson that Mrs. Erin Hill has used in the past and it was very successful. I
wish the classes were smaller so that it did not feel so chaotic, but they did really well
and stayed on task because each station interested them very much. I do not think that
I would change anything about this lesson. I feel very fortunate that I was able to teach
it!
