Lesson Implementation
Focus Lesson
Hook
Introduce the fact that there is an overall theme in the book Esperanza
Rising. Explain that theme is something where it is the main subject that the
book focuses on that is not necessarily stated in the book.
Objectives are stated in student friendly language
I will be able to know what the theme of the chapter is.
Clear explanation of purpose and relevance
It is important to look at the themes of everything in the world so that you
are able to interpret any sort of information that we take in.
Building Background
I will ask the students what they have read so far and what is currently
happening in the book. We will refer back to the vocabulary that was
introduced at the beginning of the week to them so they have a reminder of
some of the words that are coming up.

Modeling of the new learning (think aloud and/or demonstration)

Model for them how to agree and disagree
Give them the verbal prompt whether they believe it is
right that the judges of the queen of the city were justified
in not allowing someone to win because they do not have
the right look

and do not have specific rules and guidelines to follow
Collaboration
Have the students go in their think-pair-share groups and
give their thoughts on the prompts that were given in the
class: What is different about Isabelle compared to the
past winners of the queen of the city and What
disadvantages does Isabelle face entering the pageant?
Student Reflection
Ask the students after the collaboration activity to reflect
on this prompt:
