5 Environment Requirements of the Equip ment Roo m

5.3.5 Fire Protection

The communication equipment room must comply with the fire control standard. The
equipment room design should satisfy the related regulations of industrial business,
environmental protection, fire protection, and personal protection. It should comply with the
prevailing national standards and specifications as well as the specifications and requirements
for building construction in special art designs.

Inflammable and explosive substances are forbidden in the equipment room.

The equipment room must be equipped with appropriate fire extinguishers. The room
shall be equipped with alarm devices, such as smoke and heat detectors that operate
properly.

Sockets with different voltages in the equipment room should be labeled clearly.

Reserved holes in floors should be covered for safety.

According to the stipulations of "Fireproofing Space in Civil Building" in the Building Design
Fireproofing Specifications, the telecommunications building, as an important fireproofing
object, should have a design fireproofing level 2 or 1 (for high-rise buildings). The
fireproofing distance between buildings should be at least 6 m. When the neighboring
buildings are level-3 or level-4, the distance should be at least 7 m.

5.3.6 Surge Protection and Grounding

Communication systems use precision equipment. Surge protection and anti-electromagnetic
measures must be taken to ensure their normal operation.
The ancillary buildings and structures of 15 m or higher above the equipment room building,
such as the chimney and antenna, should be designed according to anti-lightning requirements
for civil buildings and structures.
During the surge protection design, measures should be taken to guard against direct lightning
strikes and the lightning current. Protective measures should also be taken to prevent side
lightning strikes when an equipment room is built in a high-rise building. In areas where
lightning occurs frequently, the side lightning strike may also occur. So, preventive measures
against side lightning strikes should be designed based on the actual situation. For example,
connect the outer metal windows of the building with the lightning protection down lead.
Along the vertical direction of the building, set horizontal metal lightning protection straps on
the outer wall at a certain interval to prevent lightning strikes.
The following lightning protection measures should be taken for the main building of the
equipment room: The lightning protection grids or belts should be provided in areas
vulnerable to lightning strikes. The objects extruding out of the building, such as the chimney
and antenna, should be installed with an overhead lightning protection wire or lightning
arrestor. The minimum diameter of the down lead should be 2 mm2 when a reinforcement bar
is used as the down lead, and the maximum spacing should be 10 m. The outdoor cables and
metal pipes should be grounded before entering the building. Before the outdoor overhead
lines are directly led into the building, an arrester should be installed at the entry point. For
the chimney, antenna, and others, a lightning arrestor or ring should be installed on the top.
For the buildings and structures, dedicated lightning downloads should be used or the bars of
the steel concrete roof plates, beams, posts, and foundation should be used as the down leads
of the lightning arresting devices.
In the past, the lightning protection ground of the building was separated from the ground of
telecom and power supply systems. Large distances are required between various grounding
devices. However, due to such reasons as small building sites, most of distance requirements
are not satisfied. As a matter of fact, the groundings cannot be separated in most cases;

5 Environment Requirements of the Equip ment Roo m

therefore, a joint grounding system is recommended for buildings. The joint grounding system
is used together with the telecom-purpose working ground and protection ground, the
lightning protection ground of the building, as well as the ground of the industrial-frequency
AC power supply system. The grounding resistance of joint grounding should be high because
the telecom grounding resistance should be far less than 10 .
It is recommended that the metal components of the building (such as reinforcing steel bars
inside walls or poles) be used as the down leads for lightning protection grounding. These
down leads should be electrically connected to equalize the indoor electric potential.

9 Cabinet Bearing Requirements

9.2 Floor Bearing Requirements for Cabinets

The equipment room floor must provide a load-bearing capacity greater than 600 kg/m2 to
bear cabinets, and the equipment room ceiling must provide a load-bearing capacity greater
than 600 kg/m2 to bear cable trays. If the requirements are not met in old buildings, take
enhancement measures to increase the load-bearing capacity.
Suggestion: Overhead cabling is recommended for newly built equipment rooms.
The cabinet model can be flexibly selected. A different model of cabinet may carry different
equipment and has different weight. The cabinet weight is subject to the actual calculation,
and the floor must be able to bear the maximum weight.

9.3 Bearing Requirements for Standard Cabinet

Configuration
The FusionCloud solution uses an integrated cabinet that weighs 590 kg.
Assume that cabinets are combined, the front aisle should be 1.2 m wide, and the rear aisle
should be 1 m wide. One person is arranged respectively on the front aisle and rear aisle. If
each person weighs 100 kg, the required floor bearing capacity can be calculated as follows:
2

(590 + 100 x 2)/[0.6 x (1.2 + 1.2/2 +1 /2)]= 573 kg/m

10 AC Po wer Supply

AC Power Supply

10.1 Requirements for AC Power Supply

The AC power supply system consisting of the mains, UPS, and generator provides
centralized power supply. While meeting the site load, it should be designed to ensure simple
cable connection, safe operation, flexible scheduling, and convenient maintenance. The
low-voltage power supply system uses three-phase five-wire mode or single-phase three-wire
mode. Table 10-1 lists the nominal voltage and frequency of the low-voltage AC power
supply.
Table 10-1 AC voltage and frequency
Nominal Voltage

Rated Frequency

220 V

50 Hz

Network products typically use the UPS to provide the AC backup power. The AC backup
power and mains power should have the same phases. The time to transfer between the UPS
and the mains power should be less than 10 ms. Otherwise, the equipment may restart or reset.
The AC power distribution capacity in the equipment room should be determined based on the
equipment working current and fault current to ensure that independent equipment is powered
by an independent power distribution facility. The voltage of the protection switch should be
higher than that of the downstream power consumption equipment. The DC power supply
system capacity should be designed to support the dynamic and static maximum loads with
certain redundancy. The lead-out of the power distribution panel should be calculated based
on the maximum capacity of the power supply load, and the cable model and specifications
should be selected depending on the lead-out.
AC communication equipment and power supply equipment should comply with the
following voltage specifications :

The voltage fluctuation range for AC communication equipment should be 10% to +5%
of the rated voltage

The voltage fluctuation range for communication equipment and important facilities
should be 15% to +10% of the rated voltage

The frequency fluctuation tolerance of AC power should be 4%, and the sine distortion
rate of the voltage waveform should be within 5%.

10 AC Po wer Supply

The customer-supplied generator should provide automatic cutoff and automatic supply. It
should feature remote communication, remote metering, remote control, standard interfaces,
and communication protocols.
AC and DC power cables should comply with the following requirements:

The cross-sectional area of the AC neutral line for communication should be identical
with that of the phase line.

The DC power feeder should be determined depending on the long-term load. The rigid
bus cable should be chosen if the cross-sectional area exceeds 95 mm2 . If there is a great
difference between the short-term load and long-term load, phased cabling can be
adopted.

AC and DC cables should be fire-resistant. The cabling should comply with

GB50045-95 Class-1 Fire Prevention Design Standard in High-rise Civil Buildings. The
low-voltage power distribution room should comply with GB50054-95 Low-voltage
Power Distribution Design Specifications.

10.2 Suggestions for AC Power Supply

If the voltage stability cannot meet the requirement, a voltage adjusting or stabilizing device
should be used.
When one of the following cases occurs in the mains power supply, a voltage adjusting device
should be used:

If communication equipment is directly powered by mains, the supply voltage exceeds

the rated voltage by 10% to +5% or exceeds the allowed voltage range of the
communication equipment.

If communication equipment is not directly powered by mains, the supply voltage

exceeds the rated voltage by 15% to +10% or exceeds the allowed voltage range of the
DC power supply equipment.

If the communication load requires the uninterrupted AC or no transient current, the UPS
or inverter power supply system should be used.

If the mains power changes abnormally, the communication sites should be equipped
with a generator set to ensure the power supply to important communication and power
loads. The capacity should be at least 1.5 to 2 times the total capacity of the
uninterrupted AC power consumption equipment.

Typically, two battery strings connected in parallel are designed, but only one battery string is
designed for the UPS. The UPS should be designed with redundancy and can be connected in
series or parallel. When the inverter or UPS is used, the active inverter is determined
depending on the maximum power and one standby inverter is required.

12 Air Conditioner

12

Air Conditioner

The capacity of an air conditioner is determined based on the following two factors:

Equipment room area

Equipment heat dissipation quantity Qequipment

Air conditioner cooling capacity = (Qequipment + Qtransfer) x 1.2 (20% redundancy considered)
Equipment heat dissipation quantity: Qequipment = (Pequipment1 + Pequipment2 + )/10000

Qequipment : Heat dissipation quantity (kcal/hour)

Pequipment : equipment power (W)

Heat transfer quantity in the equipment room: Qtransfer = F x (Toutdoor - Tindoor)*/h

Qtransfer : Heat transfer quantity (W)

F: Heat transfer area (m)

T outdoor: locally highest outdoor temperature (o C)

T indoor: indoor temperature ( o C)

: Wall heat transfer coefficient ( of brick structure = 0.87; of concrete structure =

0.79)

h: wall thickness (m)

Unit conversion of air-conditioner capacity: 1 kW = 860 kcal

1 P = 2616 W (P is the power unit of the compressor.)
The actual capacity of an air conditioner should be calculated based on the equipment room
area and the heat dissipation quantity of the equipment as well as the backup requirement. For
the calculation method, refer to the relevant engineering design specifications.
