Whole Life Concept Project Part 2

The purpose of this memorandum is to successfully identify and discuss

specific skills that are needed in order for me to be successful in achieving
specific goals three, five, and eventually ten years after graduation. Three
years after graduation I plan on being a Certified Fire Protection Specialist
while having taken the fundamentals of engineering exam. My plan is to
obtain employment in the fire protection sector immediately following
graduation. Five years after graduation I plan on becoming a licensed
Professional Engineer and work privately as a Safety Engineer. Ten years
after graduation I plan on working for myself as a private contractor.
As one can probably guess, an observational skillset is required in any
engineering field. I would need to understand technical jargon and have the
ability to identify problems. Every decent engineer has a solid technical
background, as it is essential to the safety of civilians. A successful mastery
of courses including Chemistry and Physics would aid me in acquiring
technicality. Computer proficiency in programs such as AutoCad, Microsoft
Word, and Excel is needed to analyze data on a day-to-day basis.
Engineering Technology Computer Applications and Technical drawing are
two courses that offer computer skills needed. An entrepreneur skillset is
required to achieve my ten-year plan. A skillset is required in order to
professionally draw up a business proposal to attract investors. The
management and distribution of resources are also required of entrepreneurs
and requires a specific skillset. In order to acquire these skills I have to
master the English language, as professionalism is key in conducting proper
business. Once I have taken classes such as Thermodynamics, Fluid
Mechanics, and Principles of Fire Behavior, I will be better prepared for the
CFPS exam as well as the FE exam. I will have problem solving skills that are
based on safety and protection from fire. Of course additional materials will
needed to be covered, but I think this is a good foundation of information to
build upon. Mechanical skills are also needed to ensure machinery is
functionally properly. It is important for me to understand how fire
prevention systems work. I will take Applied Mechanics I and II in order to
gain a better mechanic skillset (2016).
The variety of classes that I have taken has prepared me for my future. My
past Sociology and English classes have made me into a better writer for
example. Writing skills are essential in lab reports, write-ups, and grant
proposals. Fire Protection is specific in a sense so a general knowledge about
construction, safety, business, and people for that matter are key to meeting
my goals.

I think most of the learning goes on outside of the classroom, as soft skills
are required to be successful at anything. I need networking connections to
land the job I want post graduation. Joining SFPE is a good start to do so.
The Society of Fire Protection Engineers is a networking hub and is a great
place to meet future employers. I will also have to adapt to different
situations and cultures in the workplace. Even as the classes show,
engineering is a very diverse field and the environment is constantly
changing. Teamwork would also play a role in being adaptable, but varies
slightly. In order to achieve my goals, I will work in many teams and I need
to be able to collaborate with fellow peers. The upcoming Beam project
could be an example. Of course oral communication is important, as I will
have to exchange information with others on the job. Work experience as a
safety-engineering intern would help to build these soft skills. Finally, I will
need general people skills in order to find out how to best serve the
consumer when I have my own business. I will need to gather information to
determine what to sell and how to go about doing it.
In conclusion, this combination of both hard and soft skills will aid me in the
completion of my three, five, and ten year goals. Being that I would like to
become an entrepreneur, I personally feel that the soft skills are just as if not
more important than the hard skills. It takes a real innovator to combine the
technical know-how with the soft skills in order to create a successful
product.
