Ms. Frederick - Period 6
Addressed in Once Upon a Time and A Quilt of a Country
From reading these two short stories, Once Upon a Time and A Quilt of a Country,
readers can easily distinguish the common issue that these stories both address. They depict on
the worlds underlying issue of discrimination towards differences. For example, in Once Upon
a Time by Nadine Gordimer, the story is inspired by the apartheid in South Africa. This was a
policy that declared that non-white South Africans would be separated from whites. They were
ordered to live in a separate area and use different facilities than the whites. Also, the contact
between the two groups was limited. No one saw eye to eye. Additionally, in A Quilt of a
Country by Anna Quindlen, she talks about Americas notorious past of discrimination against
ones race. She informs readers that we should not distinguish amongst ourselves because
everyone is the same. Despite our differences, we all belong together in one spirit. In
conclusion, these stories address readers about the worlds problem of discrimination.
Discrimination occurs all over the world from our past till today. These authors wanted to inform
people about how this is a huge setback in our world. It separates individuals due to the color of

their skin, their religion, and etc. Frankly, this problem just tears our nation apart bringing us a
step away from finding our common ground.
