Picture Blending

Step by step of teaching phonics using picture

blending:
Preparing the materials
First,
List down the graphemes correlated to the level of
students and find suitable words according to the
sound below:
Year 1: s, ss, a t p m n d I g o c ck k e u r h b f ff l ll
j v w x y z zz qu ch sh ng th/th
Ai ee igh oa oo ar or ur ow oi au ear air ure er ay
ou ie ea oy ir ue aw wh ph ew oe a-e e-e i-e o-e u-e
Then,
Find pictures with simple word (2 3 sounds) such
as:

Or

a
t

*Make sure the letter is big, bolded or clear enough

to be seen by the students in class

Next,
Cut the pictures into 2 or 3 parts according to the
number of sound in particular word:
Example: 3-sound word

Teaching the students

Show the first part of the picture to the students
Example:

Say the sound of the letter c and let the students

repeat after the teacher

Next,
Repeat the first step for the second part of the
picture
Now we have two parts of the same picture

Blend the first two sound c and a into ca. Then

ask the students to repeat

Then,
Show the third parts of the picture and repeat step
1 again

Now we already have a complete set of the picture

Say the first blended sound: ca
Say the third sound: t
Teacher blend the ca sound and the t into cat
and student repeat

Finally,
Repeat again the steps above with increasing
speed of blending
Repeat for the third time but ask the students to
blend independently without guidance
Use different pictures and words and repeat all the
steps shown above

Example:
Teacher shows picture and say c

Pupil repeats to say c

Teacher shows another picture and says oo

Pupil repeat to say oo

Teacher blends c and oo and says coo
Pupil repeats to say coo
Teacher shows the third picture and says k
Pupil repeats to say k

Teacher blends coo and k and says cook

Pupils repeats to say cook
Repeat all steps above but with less guidance
Repeat for the third times without any guidance
from the teacher and pupil blends all three sounds
independently
Then use different pictures and words and repeat
all the steps again
