eT
Our worship teams have introduced the ancient tradition of rememberin
Advent. Advent is a Latin word meaning “a coming,’ established by church
leaders in the 6th Century to help Christians prepare for the celebration of
Christmas, being on the Sunday nearest November 30 and ending Christmas Eve.
It was to be a time of Sraietetcn and contemplation. Advent has been
particularly celebrated by wreaths, candles, and calendars to represent
prophecies, the coming of Christ as a baby, His salvation/entrance into our lives
and His future return to the earth as King.
Those in the middle ages would place a candle in evergreen wreaths to represent
“the Light of the world,” then added more candles, one for each week of the
season. Various colors depicted Christ's work - pur
and love; white for His birth while being lit on Chri
being red, picturing Jesus’ death.
There was also an Advent Calendar which originate
ago, with 24 tiny bags being placed on calendars
open one per day to find s
with pictures from the nativity scene.
