PART 1

Currently my major is categorized as undecided, however, I am wishing to pursue a career in

the medical field and ultimately become a Physician's Assistant after attending medical school.
There are various majors I can adopt (all in which are related to the topic) that I can choose
from in order to achieve this goal. Some of the major genres my potential major would utilize
include laboratory reports and health articles/journals/knowledge.
Laboratory Reports
Purpose

Laboratory reports provide a record of results conducted and analyzed in a

lab. They provide discussion of objectives, procedures, and results through
exploring scientific concepts. There are various careers that utilize the use of
laboratory reports such as scientists, doctors, nurses, and everything in
between. As a Physician's Assistant a laboratory report will allow me to
formulate a hypothesis by applying statistics and research in order to
diagnose a patient(s).

Content

The main goal of laboratory reports is to state the purposes of the

experiment(s), and what you hope to find in them. A procedural flowchart
must also be included in this to represent the steps taken and methods used
throughout the experiment. These reports should also include the acquired
data and observations which would allow the writer to produce a hypothesis
and lead them to a conclusion and ability to produce a viable solution.

Organization

Most laboratory reports include the following sections: a brief informational

synopsys, an introduction explaining the objectives and significance of the
experiment, a list of the procedures and methods used, the results and
discussion of the results, conclusions, and data/statistical evidence.

Format

The format of a laboratory report is similar to the format of the common essay
outline. It should be formal and should include bold headings with the
necessary information listed below, and following the correct organization. A
laboratory report should not include images, videos, audio, or citations.

Language

These reports are formal and should encompass a very serious tone
throughout. The use of I, personal experiences, and humor are not
appropriate within laboratory reports. In addition, the use of metaphors and
other descriptive language is not correct within this type of writing.

Sentences

The report should be informational and straight to the point, providing only
necessary information through concise sentences and an organized paper
structure. This type of writing does not flow as an essay does and is written
point-by-point. Grammar is somewhat but not exceedingly important within
this piece of formal writing.

Health articles/journals/knowledge
Purpose

The purpose for reading medical journals/articles, and using previous medical

knowledge is used by everyone pursuing a degree in the medical field

providing many with a plethora of information on illnesses, disease, therapies,
etc. Before becoming and as a physicians assistant, I would need to study
and know all this information before being able to assess and properly
diagnose my patient.
Content

Within the various ways in which the content of medical information is

presented, they all commonly contain information, facts, data, and statistics
related to the specific topic upon which they are discussing. Any information
not related to the issue in discussion should not be included within these
types of writings.

Organization

Ideas and information within these types of writing are organized in a logical,
professional manner.

Format

The format for this type of writing should include: important terms and their
definitions, data/statistics, possibly related images/video, and citations.

Language

This type of writing should follow a serious and informative tone, providing
readers with only the necessary information. In addition, opinions, humor, and
other informal statements/descriptive language are rarely stated within these
types of writing.

Sentences

The sentence structure within this type of writing should be continuous and
should flow while providing all of the important information. Grammar is very
important within this type of writing as it is commonly written and used by
scholars and professionals within that particular field. Lack of correct
grammar and correctly spelled words within a piece of writing tend to make it
less credible and significant. Therefore, within this type of writing, all words,
grammar, and statements are to be correct.

1. I chose to present one of the video sources I used in my LOI. The video above is
produced by CNN and the speaker begins by discussing the topic of the highly illegal
organ trade within the black market and the controversy surrounding it. The term video
is a very broad term, therefore, the genre of a video varies from topic to topic and from
video to video. Videos are generally sorted into different subcategories and are given
specific names that are useful to one wishing to search and find certain information on a
particular topic.
2. Like the genre of videos, the credibility and respect of the video are dependent
upon the video itself, and where that video came from. The video I used as a source
came from CNN, a very credible source, making it a credible argument and able to be
accepted by viewers. In general, I think video sources and documentaries especially are
for the most part, highly credible; with the only negative aspect being the possibility of
bias (only presenting one side of the argument) or misrepresentation of information
within the video source.

3. The purpose of videos as a genre are to present information through recordings

and broadcasted moving images in order to communicate the whole message or
purpose of the video to its viewers. Videos are often used to present valuable data
through the use of visual aids.
4. Only content pertinent to the topic in discussion should be included within these
types of sources. Information not related to the topic should be discluded within video
sources. The speaker in this video does an excellent job representing only the
necessary information and presenting the various voices/opinions from those concerned.
5. There is not necessarily a specific order of organization within videos, however,
the content regarding the topic in discussion should be presented in a logical order,
presenting the necessary information.
6. The format of a video(s) differ from the format of a piece(s) of writing in the fact
that: margins, headings, citations, and font are often unimportant within a video source, if
not nonexistent. Videos often contain other forms of visual aid as well such as images,
graphs, statistics, etc.
7. Again, the video itself will determine the different wording strategies and tone
used by the speaker throughout the course. The video I watched did not contain: the
speakers personal experience, use of I, descriptive language, metaphors, etc. On the
contrary, the video I watched was formal, coming from a well-known, established source,
containing statistics, graphs, complete sentence structure, correct grammar, etc. In
addition, the video I watched encompassed a very serious, professional tone throughout,
largely enhancing its credibility.
8. In my research, it was extremely difficult for me to find a credible video source
(not bias and representing both sides of the argument equally). For that reason, I would
say this genre was only semi-effective in presenting my message. Genres such as a lab
report, a medical journal, or an article would possibly be more effective in presenting my
message by containing a plethora of medical knowledge and information.
