AE 528 FINAL EXAMINATION

Open notes & books

DUE: Tuesday, December 20, 2016, at 4 pm NO EXTENSIONS except for emergencies or medical conditions (signed certification required)
Instructions: Answer all questions briefly. Open book and notes. Work independently. Do not consult with anyone except Hilton. If collaboration is found
on any part of any answer, a grade of zero for the entire exam will be awarded to
all collaborators. The exam is due no later than 4 pm on Tuesday, December 20
2016. 25% will be deducted from the grade for every fraction of a day the exam is
handed in late, except as noted above. This includes 12/20/16 after 4 pm.
You need not derive anything that you can find in any book and/or class notes
as long as you reference the item properly. Make sure you use applicable material,
otherwise you will lose credit.
1 (35%) Given:
Consider a nonlinear isotropic elastic cantilever beam with a rectangular cross section
undergoing finite deformations with equal extension ratios: i = const. Superimposed on
this deformation is infinitesimal bending with a single load at the free end.
Find:
Expressions, but DO NOT SOLVE, for all stresses ij , metric tensors Gij and G0ij and
complete boundary conditions.
2 (35%) Given:
The ODE

dU (t)
1
dt

2
+ 5

d2 U (t)
= 0
dt2

(1)

Find:
Using the successive approximation method set up but DO NOT SOLVE all equations
necessary to find U (t) and up to and including the third approximation.
3 (30%) Given:
Consider the bending problem presented in class and on p. 108 of Green & Zerna.
Find:
Find expressions, but DO NOT SOLVE, for all stresses ij and boundary conditions if the
cuboid center line is bent into a section of a half sine wave instead of a circle. The beam is
simply supported at both ends.
