Separating wall constructions detailed in

this section are categorised as follows:
- NEW-BUILD

These are Robust Detail constructions that utilise British Gypsum products where appropriate. All Robust
Details have been approved as capable of meeting or exceeding the E1 performance criteria, providing they
are built correctly. Following these specifications means you can be exempt from undertaking Pre-Completion
Testing on a 10% (by type) sample of units built. The Robust Detail scheme applies to new-build houses and
apartments only. Plots must be registered with Robust Details Limited prior to construction.

BRITISH GYPSUM APPROVED SYSTEMS

- NEW-BUILD

These constructions are British Gypsum Approved Systems, which, provided they are built correctly, have
the potential to achieve or exceed E1 performance criteria required for new-build houses and apartment
separating floor constructions and new-build rooms for residential purposes. Pre-Completion Testing must
be executed on a 10% sample (by type) to demonstrate compliance.

- CONVERSIONS AND NEW-BUILD ROOMS FOR

These constructions are British Gypsum Approved Systems which, provided they are built correctly, have the
potential to achieve or exceed E1 performance criteria required for separating floor constructions created by
material change of use or conversion. Pre-Completion Testing must be executed on a 10% sample (by type) to
demonstrate compliance. They also include constructions for Test and Declare scenario.

- NEW-BUILD AND CONVERSIONS

These constructions are British Gypsum versions of Approved Document E Guidance Constructions, which,
provided they are built correctly, are deemed to achieve the new E1 performance criteria.
Pre-Completion Testing must be executed on a 10% sample (by type) to demonstrate compliance.

42 - 45

Within category 7 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, Health and Wellbeing,
section Hea 2 states that up to four credits are available for achieving higher
standards of sound insulation than those given in Building Regulations
Approved Document E and demonstrating it by using either Pre-Completion
Testing or Robust Details. British Gypsum separating wall solutions can be
specified to achieve enhanced sound insulating performance. This stamp
highlights construction details which have the potential to achieve the number
of credits stated, provided they are built correctly.

Thistle Durafinish is a gypsum finish plaster that may be used on a wide range of backgrounds,

Finish plasters

including most undercoat plasters, and to enhance the surface damage resistance of any
British Gypsum partition or wall lining system. It is particularly suited to social housing
applications where occupancy turnover is high. Thistle Durafinish has excellent resistance to
glancing impacts and repeated abrasion, typical of the accidental damage which causes scratching,
gouging or chipping of other wall finishes. This can extend the intervals between maintenance,
helping to reduce costs and maximise the occupiers use of the building. Thistle Durafinish has

Key points

All new-build specifications are suitable for conversion projects.

Pre-Completion Testing is required when specifying British Gypsum Approved Systems.
Flanking details should be fully considered during the design and construction process. Refer to pages 160 - 179.

Specification tips

GypWall QUIET SF is a narrow solution that maximises available space.

GypWall QUIET is a twin frame solution that provides flexibility to incorporate columns within the
separating wall cavity.
GypWall CLASSIC is a cost effective, single frame solution.

Specification tips

When using systems incorporating Gypframe RB1 Resilient Bar, ensure lining board fixings are suitably
positioned and of the appropriate length to avoid contact with the framing sections behind the Gypframe
RB1 Resilient Bars.
When installing Isover insulation, ensure that the insulation covers the whole wall area without gaps. Particular
care should be taken to ensure correct installation.
Where service penetrations are unavoidable, including light switches and socket box installations, ensure
the correct detailing is followed to prevent loss of acoustic, fire and air leakage performance.
Always stagger joints in wall linings to avoid air paths which will allow the transmission of sound.

Key points

All conversion specifications are suitable for rooms designed for residential purpose, for example, hotels
and student accommodation.
Pre-Completion Testing is required when specifying British Gypsum Approved Systems.
Flanking details should be fully considered during the design and construction process.
