Course Description
ECON 101 is designed to help students understand the economic method
through the study of the principles of microeconomics. By the end of the
academic term, students will understand basic concepts (opportunity cost,
comparative advantage, marginal utility and marginal productivity, human
and financial capital, externalities, public goods, income distributions, etc.).
Students will be able to use the tools of economics to solve basic economic
problems (Does it matter how many people use an iPhone? Why do people
who drink soda pop care about the price of corn? Why does the price of a taxi
in NYC change when the weather is bad? How much will it cost to pay back
your student loan?) Students who continue in economics will have a solid
grounding in basic theory and will be prepared for advanced classes.
Students who never take another economics class will be able to explain
economic dilemmas to relatives, friends, and others they want to impress.

Critical information
This document should answer all of your questions about this class. If you
have a question, look here first for the answer. If it isnt answered in
this document, email me. I may not respond if the answer is obvious in
the syllabus.
Please put econ 101 in the subject heading when you email me. I can
filter on this heading. Messages without this heading are easily lost and
are unlikely to be answered.
While I do my best to plan everything out, the schedule may change for
unavoidable reasons. If there is a change, it will be announced in class
and posted to the Canvas site.
Plagiarism or cheating will lead to a failing grade in this class and may
lead to expulsion from this university. It is cheating to have another
person take i>clicker quizzes in your name or to use someone else's
i>clicker.
Cell phone use, talking with each other, text messaging, or the use of a
computer for things other than class business is disrespectful to the
instructor and you will be asked to stop or leave class if you participate in
these activities during lecture or discussion.
There is no way to earn extra credit for this class. Grades are based on
performance throughout the semester. The best way to get credit for this
class is to attend lecture and discussions regularly, study hard, turn in all
assignments, and contact me if you find yourself in trouble so that we can
work together to help you succeed.

Class Resources
Required Purchase ( $85): Launchpad for Microeconomics, Worth

Please bookmark the page to make it easy to return to it.
You have three options to enroll in the course: you can purchase direct
access, you can buy an access code, or you can get free 21 day access while

Optional Purchase and Use: You may choose, at your own discretion, to
have a paper copy of the textbook or textbooks in addition to Launchpad.
The paper copy is not required and not even encouraged unless you feel that
you must have it.
Grading: The class is graded on a curve and many letter grades are higher
than they would be without the curve. At the end of the semester, students
are ranked by percentage scores and assigned letter grades. Approximately
30% of final grades are in the A range, 40% in the B range, and the rest in
the C, D, or E range. I dont create letter grades until final scores are
calculated after the final exam. Individual assignments do not receive letter
grades.
The percentage distribution for last semester is inside Lecture Slides # 01. It
gives you the look and feel of a 101 distribution but there is no guarantee
that this years distribution will be exactly the same. Students who drop the
class after the drop/add deadline are included in the distribution when
6
101f16

calculating letter grades (since people tend to drop when their grades are
bad).
Grade Reporting: The Canvas gradebook will contain your grades for
assignments, quizzes, and exams. Exam grades are typically posted within a
few days of the exam and i>clicker quiz scores will be posted every few
weeks. Scores on self-check quizzes and the syllabus contract are
immediately available in the Launchpad (transferred to Canvas every few
weeks).
I will periodically post class wide distributions of points so that students can
observe how they are doing relative to the rest of the class.

Disability Accommodation: If you need an accommodation, please give
Sherrie the Verified Individual Services Accommodation (VISA) form from
Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) at least two weeks prior to the
need for accommodation (and no later than the drop/add deadline on
September 26th). If you dont have a VISA form, contact SSD to establish
eligibility and acquire a VISA form. Then we can arrange accommodations.
We may not be able to accommodate students who do not inform us of their
needs within this reasonable time. Any information you provide is private and
confidential.

and the reason for the absence within three days after the drop/add deadline
(Monday, September 26th). http://www.provost.umich.edu/calendar/religious_holidays1617.html

with class attendance is covered by the ability to drop some quiz scores.
