Course Description, Syllabus, and Business Details

Economics 101-500 (24182)

Fall, 2016

Course Description
ECON 101 is designed to help students understand the economic method
through the study of the principles of microeconomics. By the end of the
academic term, students will understand basic concepts (opportunity cost,
comparative advantage, marginal utility and marginal productivity, human
and financial capital, externalities, public goods, income distributions, etc.).
Students will be able to use the tools of economics to solve basic economic
problems (Does it matter how many people use an iPhone? Why do people
who drink soda pop care about the price of corn? Why does the price of a taxi
in NYC change when the weather is bad? How much will it cost to pay back
your student loan?) Students who continue in economics will have a solid
grounding in basic theory and will be prepared for advanced classes.
Students who never take another economics class will be able to explain
economic dilemmas to relatives, friends, and others they want to impress.

Please contact me by email. Put Econ 101 in the subject heading to get a
rapid answer.

Office Hours in room 2788 SSW Building

There will be numerous and changing office hours throughout the semester
to accommodate students varying schedules. Ill increase office hours
throughout the term. They will always be announced in class and on the
Canvas site. There will always be office hours on Mondays from 3:305:00

starting on September 12th. Students may make an individual appointment

with me by sending me an appropriate email.

Critical information

This document should answer all of your questions about this class. If you
have a question, look here first for the answer. If it isnt answered in
this document, email me. I may not respond if the answer is obvious in
the syllabus.

Please put econ 101 in the subject heading when you email me. I can
filter on this heading. Messages without this heading are easily lost and
are unlikely to be answered.

Attendance at lecture and discussion is your responsibility. You do not

need to inform me of absences and you are responsible for what is
missed. Lectures and other materials are complementaryand all are
covered in exams and assignments. If you miss class you may miss
i>clicker quizzes and your grade may be affected.

While I do my best to plan everything out, the schedule may change for
unavoidable reasons. If there is a change, it will be announced in class
and posted to the Canvas site.

Plagiarism or cheating will lead to a failing grade in this class and may
lead to expulsion from this university. It is cheating to have another
person take i>clicker quizzes in your name or to use someone else's
i>clicker.

Cell phone use, talking with each other, text messaging, or the use of a
computer for things other than class business is disrespectful to the
instructor and you will be asked to stop or leave class if you participate in
these activities during lecture or discussion.

There is no way to earn extra credit for this class. Grades are based on
performance throughout the semester. The best way to get credit for this
class is to attend lecture and discussions regularly, study hard, turn in all
assignments, and contact me if you find yourself in trouble so that we can
work together to help you succeed.

Late assignments are not accepted and there is no accommodation

for missing exams without an adequately documented emergency
(ADE). The exams will be on October 7th, November 11th, and
December 12th during class time. If you do not attend an exam you
will receive a zero for the exam grade.

Register your i>clicker on our Canvas site, not at i>clicker.com.

I>clickers are linked to your name early in the semester. If you get a
different i>clicker, register it in Canvas AND inform Sherrie so that
grades can be assigned appropriately.

There are a number of built-in features so that people can make mistakes
or miss some work without cost. In general, you are responsible for
mistakes youve made if you do not follow the instructions in this syllabus.
Make sure you that you understand your obligations and rights in this

Optional Purchase and Use: You may choose, at your own discretion, to
have a paper copy of the textbook or textbooks in addition to Launchpad.
The paper copy is not required and not even encouraged unless you feel that
you must have it.

Academic Misconduct and Grading

Academic Misconduct: The University of Michigans community functions
best when its members treat one another with honesty, fairness, respect,
and trust. The college promotes the assumption of personal responsibility
and integrity, and prohibits all forms of academic dishonesty and
misconduct. All cases of academic misconduct will be referred to the Office of
the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education. If you are caught in an act
of academic misconduct, you will fail the class. You may be suspended or
expelled from the university. Please make sure you understand what
constitutes academic misconduct. See
http://www.lsa.umich.edu/academicintegrity/examples.html.
Along with standard plagiarism and cheating possibilities: Do not speak
publically about any Self Check Quiz during the time the quiz is open to be
taken. Do not take Self Check Quizzes with other students and talk about
possible answers. Do not post or give other people answers to the Self
Check Quizzes.
Remember that using someone elses i>clicker or giving your i>clicker to
someone else to use constitutes cheating (I will often tell you to talk to your
neighbors during i>clicker exercisesthat is not cheating).

Grading: The class is graded on a curve and many letter grades are higher
than they would be without the curve. At the end of the semester, students
are ranked by percentage scores and assigned letter grades. Approximately
30% of final grades are in the A range, 40% in the B range, and the rest in
the C, D, or E range. I dont create letter grades until final scores are
calculated after the final exam. Individual assignments do not receive letter
grades.
The percentage distribution for last semester is inside Lecture Slides # 01. It
gives you the look and feel of a 101 distribution but there is no guarantee
that this years distribution will be exactly the same. Students who drop the
class after the drop/add deadline are included in the distribution when
6

calculating letter grades (since people tend to drop when their grades are
bad).
Grade Reporting: The Canvas gradebook will contain your grades for
assignments, quizzes, and exams. Exam grades are typically posted within a
few days of the exam and i>clicker quiz scores will be posted every few
weeks. Scores on self-check quizzes and the syllabus contract are
immediately available in the Launchpad (transferred to Canvas every few
weeks).
I will periodically post class wide distributions of points so that students can
observe how they are doing relative to the rest of the class.

SCQs evaluate developing knowledge (like basic concepts or simple

problems). Only 15 SCQ count toward your grade: Four are freebies.
They can be skipped for excused or unexcused reasons like illness, family
visits, travel, or bad weather. Dont miss too many for non-emergencies
because you may have an emergency later. You cannot make-up a SCQ. If
you take more than 15, your lowest grades will be dropped.
You may take each SCQ twice and will receive the higher score. Each quiz
has randomized questions from a question pool. Solutions will be on
Launchpad after the due date.
Students who register late but before the drop/add deadline could miss
required SCQ. These will count toward your freebies and it is up to you
to ensure that you have completed the appropriate number of quizzes for
the semester.
Self-check quizzes are listed in the schedule using to the chapters in the
Krugman/Wells textbook as a convenience (even though lectures and extra
reading also apply).

There are 20 quizzes worth 2 points each. You earn point for
participation if you answer at least 75% of the questions, and 1.5/

any excused or unexcused reason. Before September 26th, they are
for practice only. If you register after that class, that untaken quiz
will be one of your freebies. If you take more than 16 i>clicker

Exams evaluate developed knowledge. They are more difficult than

quizzes. You will use economic tools to solve potentially complex problems.
Exam questions are multiple-choice but typically are analytical questions
requiring problem solving. You will have to solve the problem in order to
choose the correct answer. Exams are not cumulative in terms of the main
topic of the questions but are necessarily cumulative in the use of
economic methods.

Special Needs
Student Mental Health and Wellbeing: UM is committed to advancing
the mental health and wellbeing of its students. If you or someone you know
is feeling overwhelmed, depressed, and/or in need of support, services are
available. Contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at (734)
764-8312 and https://caps.umich.edu/, or contact its counselors physically
located on both North and Central Campus. Or call University Health Service
(UHS) at 734-764-8320, and https://www.uhs.umich.edu/mentalhealthsvcs, or
for alcohol or drug concerns, see www.uhs.umich.edu/aodresources.
Students Representing UM in an Official Capacity off campus: If you
are a university athlete (or officially representing the university) and may be
absent during exams (see the syllabus for exam dates), please provide
Sherrie with an email from your coach or academic advisor within three days
after the drop/add deadline (September 26th). Travel that interferes with class
attendance is covered by the ability to drop some quiz scores.
This initial email must include:
The emails subject heading: Econ 101, Student officially representing the
university
Your name as the identified student. A form letter about schedules is not
acceptable.
The coachs and/or the academic advisors email address and the name
and email address of the person who will help me arrange for you to take
your exam on the road.
An accounting of which exams may be in conflict with your university
representation even if youre not sure you will be gone.
Please stay in touch with me. If you will be away during exams, I will work
with an official monitor and you will take the exam at the same time as
everyone else. I will not accommodate athlete absences for exams if I am
not specifically notified of your absence with a minimum of two weeks notice.
Disability Accommodation: If you need an accommodation, please give
Sherrie the Verified Individual Services Accommodation (VISA) form from
Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) at least two weeks prior to the
need for accommodation (and no later than the drop/add deadline on
September 26th). If you dont have a VISA form, contact SSD to establish
eligibility and acquire a VISA form. Then we can arrange accommodations.
We may not be able to accommodate students who do not inform us of their
needs within this reasonable time. Any information you provide is private and
confidential.
Religious Accommodation: U-M Guidance to Students Regarding Conflicts
Between the Academic and Religious Calendars
If you need to be absent from an exam, send me an email stating the date

and the reason for the absence within three days after the drop/add deadline
(Monday, September 26th). http://www.provost.umich.edu/calendar/religious_holidays1617.html

The subject heading must read: Econ 101, Student religious conflict.
I will do my best to accommodate you and make it easy for you to fulfill
your exam responsibilities in this class. A religious conflict that interferes
with class attendance is covered by the ability to drop some quiz scores.

Lecture, Reading, and Assignment Schedule

This schedule is formatted with each week on its own page. If you choose to
print a paper copy, you may want to reformat the schedule.
The schedule may change because there may be delays in classes and
because several chapters are joined together in a theme and the ideas dont
necessarily fit neatly into a single days lecture. The order of readings and
subjects will stay the same unless announced in lecture and on the Canvas
course site. Attending lecture and discussion is a sure way to know exactly
what is being discussed on any particular day.
