Survey Results
The cycling club survey we conducted had a total of 19 questions which asked
cyclists about their age, gender, cycling skill level, preferred terrain, apps or website
features that would be useful while cycling, activity, etc. We received 86 survey
responses which will be used to analyze trends that would be useful when building a
cycling website.
Gender
Age
The survey had 86 respondents, of which 81.4% were males and 18.6% were female.
There was a wide range of respondent ages which ranged from under 18 to older
than 50. Most of the respondents were in the 18-29 age range (36% of respondents),
with 30-39 coming in at a close second (31.4% of respondents).
As the chart above illustrates, 50% of survey takers indicated that they go cycling a
couple times a week. 26% indicated that they go cycling every day. The next graph
will indicate the reasonings that people cycle.
As this chart indicates, the main reason people choose to go cycling is for fun. There
was a survey error that created 2 options for the same question choice. In actuality,
the results indicate that 69.1%, instead of 67.9%, of respondents cycle for fun.
This chart analyzes the self-reported skill level of the survey respondents. When given
the choices of casual, intermediate, and expert, 65.1% of respondents categorize
themselves as an intermediately skilled cyclist.
Favorite terrain?
This graph indicates the various types of terrain that are favoritted by survey
respondents. The terrain type that was the most popular with survey respondents
was hills with 60.2%. Mountainous terrain was the second most popular with 50.6%.
The respondents could indicate more than one favorite terrain.
With a result of 72.9%, the majority of survey respondents indicated that they were
not part of a cycling club. Whether they cycle independently or with a group of friends
is unclear.
Despite the fact that the chart above this one indicates that over 70% of respondents
are not part of a cycling club, 63.5% of respondents have visited a cycling club
website.
When asked in a following survey question about what cycling sites people visit,
respondents responded with a wide range of websites. The results that came up
most frequently were: reddit.com/r/bicycling, Strava, Bikerumor, Bikesnob,
bicycling.com, cycling Facebook groups, bicycle retailers, and cyclingnews.com.
This chart indicates that, with a result of 48.2%, most respondents do not look at their
phone while cycling.
frequently were blue, yellow, green, grey, brown, and orange. Blue and yellow came up
the most often in the text responses.
Of the respondents that are part of a cycling club, most indicated that they preferred
to be contacted by email or social media.
Summary of Results
From conducting this survey of cyclists and analyzing the charts and answers
input by respondents, we can clearly see the kinds of things that are important to
cyclists and the types of features that should be included in a cycling club website.
Asking general questions about respondent age, gender, skill level, reasons for
cycling, cycling frequency, and the terrain they enjoy give us a general idea about who
the website audience will be and what sort of information they might want to see on a
website. The respondents varied greatly in their responses to these questions, which
indicate that they would want to see a variety of information, not just information
pertaining to one particular skill level or terrain type. By asking about what web/
mobile features respondents currently use for cycling and features they would like to
see, it indicates what sort of features they would find useful on a website. The results
indicate that respondents are highly interested in interactive features, especially
those that would allow them to plan, keep track of, and upload their rides. Website
features that show information about particular routes will be essential. The route
information should include: distance, elevation, terrain type, length, and possibly skill
level. Other interactive web features that should be included are: weather forecast,
calendar of events, user blog/ forum, links to social media groups, photo/ video
sharing, and possibly a route leaderboard. The survey indicates that most
respondents would also like to see more general bicycling information on a website.
Information that should be included are: safety information, information about the
local area, and a beginners guide. The website should focus on interactive features
that will be useful for ride planning and the social aspects of cycling. This survey was
a valuable way of finding out what features are the most important to cyclists and
their thoughts on various cycling topics.
