Samsung KIES Online User Update Procedure **

** IMPORTANT NOTES

1) Please backup all personal data stored on your mobile device (Contacts, Calendar, SMS, Email,
Photos, Apps, Audio, Video, Documents and any other personal data and files) to a PC/External
Storage as the phone devices memory will be formatted during the upgrade.

2) This instruction is applicable for commercially purchased devices only. Demo devices or devices
purchased outside Australia are excluded from the instructions on this document.

3) This instruction is applicable to Windows XP (SP2), Windows Vista and Windows 7 only.
Currently, a MAC version of the online update is unavailable.
Currently, 64-bit operating systems are not supported.

4) System Requirements
CPU: Pentium 1.8GHz or Higher (Recommended)
RAM: 1GB or higher (Recommended)
HDD: 500MB or more available hard disk space
Screen Resolution: 1024 X 768 (600), 32 bit or above
USB Port
Microsoft DirectX 9.0C or higher
.Net Framework 3.5 SP1

5) The update tool requires a direct connection to the Internet you may need to configure your
Firewall or Antivirus software to allow this.

6) Samsung Electronics Australia Pty Ltd ACN 002 915 648 (Samsung) is offering customers a free
online update to the phone software. Please note that data charges may be incurred during the KIES
and software download process depending on the data plan with your Internet provider.

7) Samsung makes every effort to deliver high quality products, we do not guarantee that our products
are free from defects. This software upgrade is provided to you as is", and you use the software
upgrade at your own risk. Samsung makes no warranties as to the performance, merchantability,
fitness for a particular purpose, or any other warranties whether expressed or implied. No oral or
written communication from, or information provided by, Samsung shall create a warranty. In no
event shall Samsung be liable for any general, consequential, incidental, indirect, special, loss of
profit or opportunity, exemplary, punitive, special or other damages whatsoever resulting from
resulting from the use, misuse, or inability to use this software upgrade, whether due to breach of
contract, breach of warranty, strict liability, product liability, the negligence of Samsung or
otherwise. No provision of this disclaimer purports to restrict or modify or have the effect of
excluding, restricting or modifying the application any conditions and warranties imposed and
required to be binding by statute.

The below instructions will assist you in updating your Samsung mobile device. Please follow all steps below
carefully as they are vital for a successful upgrade.
Please Note: all personal data stored on your mobile devices internal memory (Contacts, Calendar, SMS,
Email, Photos, Apps, Audio, Video, Documents and any other personal data and files) will be removed from
your device during this procedure. Backup using Kies/External Storage is strongly recommended as the
phone memory will be formatted during the upgrade (SIM/External SD memory will remain intact).

1. PC Software installation
1) Download and Install Samsung Kies on your PC

Search for your Mobile Device (example Samsung GALAXY S II), Select the applicable
Firmware Upgrade link and then Download Kies
Note: You may have already acquired and installed an earlier version of Kies via a CD or via a
previous download from the Internet. If so, please uninstall the earlier version and install the latest
version available via the link above.

2) Restart your PC for all changes to be applied


3) Run Kies
4) If prompted to update to a later version of Kies proceed with the update

2. Device Backup
1) Run Kies
2) Turn handset on and connect to the PC using a USB cable
3) If prompted to upgrade device firmware select Cancel

4) Select your mobile device under Connected Devices in the top left hand corner of Kies
5) Select Backup/Restore tab

6) Place a tick in Select all items checkbox or manually select items requiring backup by placing a tick in
each item.

7) Select Back up to begin


8) Select Complete when Data successfully backed up message is displayed
9) Exit Kies

3. Firmware Upgrade
1) Turn on your handset (enter the SIM PIN if required).
2) Run Kies and connect your handset to the PC using a USB cable.

3) A notification message for firmware upgrade will now be seen. Select Update to proceed.
4) Select Start Upgrade to begin the upgrade process after confirming that you have read all of the
displayed information

5) The upgrade will begin by updating any required Plug-Ins


6) The upgrade tool will now start downloading the updated software from the Samsung server.
IMPORTANT: Please do not unplug your device during this process.

7) The upgrade tool will now start upgrading the mobile device using the downloaded software.
IMPORTANT: Please do not unplug your mobile device during this process.

8) After the upgrade is complete the mobile device will power OFF and power back ON (this may take
a few minutes).

5. Restore Device Backup


1) Run Kies
2)

Turn mobile device on and connect to PC using USB cable

3) Select your mobile under Connected Devices in the top left hand corner of Kies
4) Select Backup/Restore tab
5) Select Restore
6) Select the backup file to be used (Identified by date and time)

7) Select Next then Start Restore to begin restoring device backup

8) Data restore complete will be displayed when the process is complete. You can now disconnect
your mobile device from the PC.
