Technical Information

SODIUM ANTIMONATE-E
SODIUM ANTIMONATE
CAS No. [15432856]
Sodium Antimonate-E is primarily used as a fining agent where it catalyses the formation of gas
bubbles, accelerating their rise out of the melt in optical grade glasses. In this application, it is
extremely important to minimize the levels of transition group metals as contaminants. Particularly
important are the stronger colorants of Nickel, Chromium, Cobalt, and to a lesser extent Iron and
Copper. While theoretically 85% as effective as arsenic in its role as a fining agent, its relative
toxicity, is considered to be very much lower. A wetted grade is available using a 10 weight
ashless mineral oil to further improve on hygiene.
Sodium Antimonate-E also finds applications as an opacifier in ceramic frits and glazes. In this
application it also acts as a corrosion inhibitor when applied to a metallic foundation such as cast
iron in bathtubs.
