Preface
As a member of the Youth Member Section (YMS) Malaysia striving under the name of
IMechE UNITEN Student Chapter, we are required to produce a report that summarizes our
yearly event which covers from July 2015 to July 2016 in line with IMechE's vision:
"Improving the world through engineering." The programs conducted were planned equally
to reflect on the 6 key themes of Education, Energy, Environment, Healthcare, Manufacturing
and Transport. All these programs are aimed to spark interests of engineering and to introduce
the vast stream of Mechanical Engineering field to fellow students. We classified the
activities
into
few
categories,
namely:
Visit,
Competition,
Seminar/Talk,
With the presentation of this report, we hope to document our journey and showcase the
diligent and hard work of the club committees. The following pages reflect their earnest
passion towards IMechE as well as their ability of working as a team and putting devotion
towards the club.
Introduction
The purpose of the YMS Secretarial report is to summarise all the activities of the Student
Chapter since the previous YMS report submission. We will try to be as brief as possible and
wish to apologise in advance if we have omitted the contribution or achievement of any
individual. The goal of this report is to outline the events both on and off the field, and to
outline the future vision and aspirations of the club going forward. Firstly, we would like to
introduce some of our work in the past year, outline the effort and workload taken on by
elected committees and people involved, and then move on to report on the activities
throughout last year. The events which were conducted from July 2015 to July 2016 comprise
of programs ranging from educational talk, UNITEN internal competition, workshop as well
as industrial visit to the industry and the celebrated IMechE Annual Grand Meeting for the
new students and the existing IMechE UNITEN Student Chapter members. The report ends
with us stating our achievements, future plans as well as a conclusion to the report.
About Us
3.1
Club Administration
The club has always been administered by the same people. The President, Vice President,
Treasurer and Secretary, not to forget all the other committee members and vice-positions to
aid in all decisions and events. Our club is run by the Executive Committee. We met about
once every fortnightly this year, with excellent attendance from the majority of the group,
except for cases during semester breaks and exam period when our activities slow down as
well.
As with every other club and society, we have a new president in this term and president that
has gone before has brought their own style and personality to the Presidency. Mr. Chong
Kah Luo is no exception, and we hope that he will reflect on his Presidency and lead the
student chapter and her committees to greater achievements. Mr. Chong Kah Luo, has
represented us at many functions within and outside the student chapter, bringing dignity and
a sense of well-being to this office.
It is also to be noted that our previous ALO Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Khairul Salleh bin Mohamed
Sahari had decided to step down and will be replaced by Mr. Chua Yaw Long. As a
professional student body we will always seek engagement with students. We live in a world
today where if we are not being liked, poked, or shared youre invisible. Mr. Chua Yaw Long,
as our new advisor and ALO for the last few months, has raised the profile of this Student
Chapter, particularly through events and eventually led to a stronger presence in the YMS
section and social media attention. We are competing with so many other activities for
students attention and we believe with Mr. Chuas leadership, we will not only be able to
capture the attention of students with interesting events, but to also promote the core values
of engineering among them. It is also the collective responsibility of us all to recruit new
members, thus ensuring the future survival of this club. In this reporting year, we conducted a
few recruitment events to increase the numbers of the student chapter.
3.2
Summary of Members
For UNITEN IMechE Uniten Student Chapter, there are 545 registered members in the
database. In the past year, there were 61 new members whom were registered with us. There
were a few recruitment drives throughout the year through events which were conducted. For

A visit to the KVMRT Underground Works Visitor Centre had been carried out by
IMeche UNITEN Student Chapter on the 30th of July 2015. Accompanied by Mr. Ikhwan, the
teacher advisor for this program, a total of 18 students including 3 IMechE UNITEN Student
Chapter Committee members joined this program.
The main purpose of this visit was to provide UNITENs Mechanical Engineering
students an insight into how MRT operates. This visit helped to bridge the gap between
classroom and the real working world. Besides, this visit was beneficial for the students
because it helped to improve students knowledge and understanding on the tasks a
Mechanical Engineer will do if they decide to involve themselves in this particular field. The
participants also had the chance to observe and understand the functions and mechanics of the
MRT system as well as the maintenance performed on the MRT after a specified length of
service distance in order to ensure the safety and efficiency of the system. This visit was
made open to all students pursuing Mechanical Engineering in UNITEN.

As for the financial expenditure of this event, the budget successfully acquired from
UNITEN Student Affairs Department was RM 800. This budget was not as high as expected,
but the event was still able to be conducted, even within this budget.
In conclusion, this competition had been carried out smoothly. Despite the successes,
there were still some small mistakes and they were reviewed during the event post-mortem
session. Overall, the event had strengthened the bond and teamwork spirit among the
committee members, especially for the recently joined boards which had learned a lot about
event management from this event.

Future events
Other than the reported events within the time frame, UNITEN IMechE Student Chapter also
conducted IMechE Mini Tutorial classes for students. The classes were conducted by high
performing students to teach a specific subject to weaker students. This eliminates the barrier
and the fear of interacting with lecturers. On October 15 th, UNITEN IMechE Student Chapter
also organized the SEAR (South East Asia Region) SoFE in which we saw participants from
Brunei, Singapore and Malaysia converge at UNITEN for a thrilling international level
competition. A more detailed report of this event will be presented in the next yearly report.
For the following year, more events relating to the 6 key themes of IMechE will be conducted
in order to promote engineering and interest among students. A tentative list of programs that
will be conducted include: Visitations to Airod, GE Aviation and Northport; Talk on biomass
by HiGi, Visitation to Nestle Food Factory, and various other intra-varsity competitions.

Achievements
o Design Challenge Competition 2015
The Design Challenge Competition gives undergraduates a taste of the real world of
engineering by setting them a challenge to design and create a device to a strict
technical specification.
In the 2015 competition, IMechE UNITEN sent 2 representatives in a group of 4
which represented UNITEN in the competition to build a biomedical device. The
device used hand-gestures to deliver communication between patients and normal
people. IMechE UNITEN came out as the winner of the competition.

Conclusion
In conclusion, we wish to report a year of continued success for IMechE UNITEN Student
Chapter. We continue to incrementally improve year on year, getting a little bit better at
everything we do. With the continuous support from YMS, the university, lecturers and
friends, we have renewed sense of purpose, and the Student Chapter will continue to promote
the interests of engineering in the local scene. We will continue to serve as a professional
student body for our university student community, enhance interest and promote engineering
to the society, and to play our role in the development of engineering knowledge. We hereby
submit this report to IMechE Malaysia YMS and wish to thank you all for your support, both
financially and physically over the past 12 months.
