Multiclone Dust Collector Provides Efficiency with Durability

and Ease of Maintenance

Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation
Group, Inc.s (B&W PGG) complete
line of pollution control equipment
and upgrade services can help
you meet stringent environmental
requirements, improve plant
performance and availability,
reduce operating and maintenance
costs, and improve the reliability
of existing air pollution control
equipment. In addition, we are the
original manufacturer of replacement parts, upgrade systems and
standard air pollution control
products formerly offered by
Western Precipitation.

Included in B&W PGGs environmental equipment product offering

is the Multiclone dust collector
the simplest and most efficient
multiple tube cyclonic collector
available.

Features and benefits

The Multiclone dust collectors

cast iron collecting tubes wear
longer than tubes manufactured
from other materials. Special alloy
collecting tubes and vanes are
available for high temperature or
severe erosion applications.

The Multiclone collector offers

many unique features and benefits:
Minimal labor cost collecting
tubes and inlet vanes are easy
to replace; simply remove the
attachment nuts and lower the
tube into the hopper.

Long-lasting collecting tube

life extra thick metal protects
critical wear surfaces. Ni-Hard
components are available for
more abrasive dust.

B&W PGGs Multiclone dust collector is simple in design, yet effective at

collecting a variety of entrained dust for a wide range of industry applications.
Each system is custom engineered to provide the most efficient dust removal.

to prevent tube plugging.

Simple modular construction

each module is rigid enough
to stand unbraced before it is
erected.

Versatile application can

be used as a pre-cleaner to
lighten the dust load on a
secondary collector. Can be
applied to a variety of particulate sources.

Pioneering first
In the 1930s, Western Precipitation pioneered the first multiple
tube, high efficiency cyclonic
collector, now widely imitated
throughout the air pollution control industry. Since its beginning,
the Multiclone collector has
been ruggedly built with thick
cast iron tubes and vanes. Parts
compatibility has been maintained
throughout continuous refinement.
Abrasion resistant materials and

other design improvements can be

used in earlier vintage Multiclone
collectors as well as more recent
designs.

Simple design and

operation

A whirling motion is imparted

to the gas entering a cyclonic
collector. This action generates
centrifugal force that concentrates
particles of entrained dust at the
interior walls of the collecting
tubes. The particles then fall and
are discharged from the bottom of
the tube. Clean gas exits through
the outlet at the collecting tubes
vertical centerline.

Installation versatility

With its modular construction,

each Multiclone dust collector is
designed to minimize the number
of components shipped. Typically,
each module of the Multiclone
collector is shipped with the upper
housing completely assembled
with the collecting tube sheet,
outlet tube sheet, collecting tubes,
directional vanes and outlet tubes.
The collecting hoppers are shipped
in one or two pieces. Multiclone
modules may also be shipped
unassembled when required.

Applications to meet
your needs

Multiclone collectors can be used

in many applications for a variety
of industries, products and fuels:

Power plants and industrial

boilers (coal, oil, biomass,
bagasse, wood, fluidized bed)
Pulp and paper
Cement plants

The Multiclone collector utilizes centrifugal action to separate dust from the
gas stream.

Energy recovery and

efficiency enhancement
To achieve high efficiencies in
cyclonic collectors, some sacrifice
of pressure loss is usually required.
Multiple inlet vane configurations are available to maximize

the performance for a particular

application while minimizing the
overall pressure loss across the
collector.

In addition to inlet vane selections,

a Spirocone energy recovery

Collecting Tube Cross-Section

device is also offered for 9 inch

Multiclone collectors. This device,
when installed at the bottom of
each outlet tube, can reduce pressure loss with little or no reduction
in efficiency. The Spirocone energy
recovery device was engineered
from years of research and field
testing.

Collecting tubes and components of the Multiclone collector have been refined to
ensure long-term reliability and ease of maintenance while retaining replacement
part compatibility.

The optional Spirocone (top) will

decrease the draft loss across the unit
with minimal reduction in collection
performance. The optional Tricone
(bottom) will improve fine particulate
collection with slightly more draft loss.

On-site expertise
B&W PGG air pollution control engineers and field service personnel
can assist in identifying and solving
performance or maintenance issues
with your existing dust collection
equipment. These issues may be
caused by erosion, fouling, changes
in fuel supply, or other operating
and maintenance parameters.
Many of our customers are also
finding that they need to improve
the performance of existing equipment. Our experts will assess the
situation, look for improvement
opportunities, and offer custom
designed solutions.

Arrangements to Fit Your Needs

VCU
Arrangement

The VCU arrangement (at right) allows

the inlet duct to be positioned at any
angle to meet specific site conditions.
The VC arrangement (see front page)
has horizontal inlet and top sloping outlet. Both arrangements are available
for the 9 or 12 inch Multiclone collector.
This flexibility, along with the modular
design, allows a Multiclone collector to
match nearly all site conditions.
