A big-big Thank to Michel Grand (and Claire) for the link of Isao Hondas book ". "
[On Origami] (Tokyo: Japan Toy Association, December 1931). It's really a very interesting
document and a wonderfull rediscovering.
I don't think that this book was published in two volumes. Probably, the cause of the
confussion is that Hondas book include a first part with 61 origami models (pp.1-45), and a
supplement or 'second part' about three diferent subjects: folded wrapping paper gifts (8
models, pp. 46-55), towels (6 models, pp. 56-61) and napkins (6 models, pp.62-67). As ususal
in Gershon Legmans bibliographic descriptions in his "Bibliography of Paper-Folding" (1952),
he mentioned very frequently the parts of the book who include essencialy paper folding. So,
Legmans "1st pt." mention mean high probably the 'first part' of Hondas book, but not a 'first
volume'. In the title of the book ". " [On Origami] is no mention about a first
volume.
As the good intuition of David Lister suposed, the big majority of the models are not from
Honda itself, but from the japanese tradition and classic books
as Kayaragusa or Senbazuru orikata, as well as from the froebelian forms of life and
beauty and other west sources.
After compare this book with other later books of Honda, we can see that Honda published
many models from 1931 again in his other books, but not all. 43 models (also ca. half of all
the models in the book) are for me really new. I don't checked (because I don't have the
books) the follow Hondas books: Origami Living (I+II)", Origami Zoo (animals+birds)", "Monkiri and Origami Kangaroo book. Of course, "Origami Shuko" is not checked too. Perhaps
somebody can help to compare it in these books.
A special interest for me are de six napkin models, taked high probably from an english book.
I'm looking for which. The presence of this folded west napkin models show that the art of
folded napkins was really imported in Japan, probably in the same time as the froebelian
forms, also during the last quarter of the 19th century.
Honda was critised frequently for Harbin and others, because he taked to publish modells
from other authors, but today, with historical perspective, we must make justice with him. Of
course, in 1931 the concept of author was not the same as today. The 1931 book itself
shows that Honda was as a good collector of japanese and some european models. The book

shows too to that Honda was from beginn very interested on historical japanese sources. We
can considere him really a researcher of his time. I'm sure that if sometimes we found a
sample of Hondas book "Origami Shuko" (1941 or 1944), it will be a very interesting document
about historical and traditional models too.
Here I give you a short comment of each model of Hondas book On Origami (1931). I
transcribed the japanese caracters with Google. Also I can give no garantee about a full
rightness. Some day perhaps will join in this forum some japanese researcher and it will be
wonderfull for us all. Until this day, we have only what we have.
