Summary
FlycatcherdevicemanufacturedunderthenameofWispyMosquitoKillerbyCVSVentilation
SystemsIndustryTradeLimitedCompanyhasbeentestedbyUniversityofIstanbulScienceFaculty
BiologyDepartment.Asaresult,ithasbeendeterminedthatthedeviceiscapableofcatchingthe
Luciliasericata(Greenbottlefly)of87.5%,thevinegarfly(Drosophylasp.)of70%andthe
mosquitoes(Anaphelessp.andCulexsp.)of72.5%.Theresultsoftheexperimentpresentthatthis
deviceiscapableoftrappingwingedinsectsinacertainvolumeofenvironmentwithinitsbody
successfully.
Introduction:
Insectsamongstotherinvertebratesaretheonlylivingcreaturescapableofflying.Theyexistalmost
anywhereintheworldwiththisabilityofthem.Theyincludemorethanamilliondescribedspecies.
Whilethereareinsectsthatareveryusefulforpeople(bees)ontheotherhandthereareinsectsthat
havenegativeeffectsoneconomyandhealth.Humanbeingshavefoughtagainsttheinsectsthatare
notwelcomedbypeopleforalongtime.Therearemanyofmethodstofightagainsttheinsectsand
thosemethodsincludechemicalmaterialsinordertokillthem.Itisknownthatthosechemical
materialsareathreadtohumanhealthandtheenvironment.Latelyithasbecomesignificantto
fightagainstinsectswithoutusingchemicalmaterials.Somevarioustechniquesarebeingdeveloped
forthispurpose.ThedevicedevelopedbyCVSVENTILATIONSYSTEMSCORP.andusedinourtests
attractsthewingedinsectsbythemediumoflightanddrivesthemnearbysotheyareaccumulated
intothenetholderatthebottomthroughairstream.Thepurposeofourexperimentsistomeasure
theabilityofthedeviceslightandairstreamtodrivetheinsectsnearbyandtrapthemintothe
holder.Four(4)differentspeciesofDipteraorderinvarioussizeshavebeenusedforthispurpose.
Thosespeciesarethemostcommoninsectsaroundthehumanbeings.
MaterialsandMethod
TheexperimentshavebeenperformedatZoologyLaboratoryofScienceFacultyBiologyDepartment
UniversityofIstanbul.Laboratoryenvironmentof50manda90x140x200cmspecialcabinin
laboratoryhavebeenusedfortheexperiment.TheCabinusedastestenvironmentwasprovided
lightproofandthedeviceusedinthetest(WispyMosquitoKiller)washungontheceilingofthe
blackenedcabin.FourdifferentspeciesofDipteraorder(Drosophylasp.ofLuciliasericata

Anophelessp.andculex.Sp.)invarioussizeshavebeenused.Thoseinsectshavebeenrearedin
vitro.Luciliasericata(Greenbottleflies)isaround7and10mmlongandattractedbythesmellof
flesh.ThoseflieswereprovidedbyUniversityofIstanbulForensicMedicineInstitute.Drosophylasp.
(vinegarflies)isgenerallyseeninsummer.Theyarearound2and4mmlong.Theylikefruitsand
vegetablesleftout.ThoseflieswereprovidedbyUniversityofIstanbulScienceFacultyDepartment
ofMolecularBiologyandGenetics.Anaphelessp.andCulexsp.arethemosquitoes.Theyareactive
insummerespeciallyduringthenightandaround7and9mmlong;femaleonessuckblood.Those
fileshavebeenrearedina35X140X60cmaquariumatZoologyLaboratoryofUniversityofIstanbul
ScienceFacultyBiologyDepartment.

ThosespeciesofDipteradisturbpeoplebothindoorandoutdoorduringsummerseason.These
specieshavebeenusedintheexperimentduetotheireasyrearingandbeinghighinnumber
comparingtootherwingedinsectsaroundpeople.

werefoundintheholderofthedevice.Performanceofthedeviceforthisspeciesis85.5%.50
individualsofvinegarflies(Drosophylasp.)wereusedintotaland35ofthemwerefoundinthe
holderofthedevice.Performanceofthedeviceforthisspeciesis70%.102individualsofmosquitoes
(Anophelessp.andCulexsp.)wereusedintotaland74ofthemwerefoundintheholderofthe
device.Theperformanceofthedeviceforthisspeciesis72.3%.Totalperformancerateofthe
experimentis77%.

DiscussionandConclusion
Asaresult,ithasbeendeterminedthatbrandofWispyMosquitoKillerdeviceiscapableof
attractingtheinsectsbythemediaoflightandthroughairstreamasintendedtobeinthe
experimentsandtrapsthemintothenetholderatthebottomdesigneddoublelayered.Whatwe
seeintheendoftheexperimentsisanothersignificantpropertyofthedevicewhichistoaccumulate
oftheinsectsintotheholderofthedevicealive.Sowehavethechancetoselectsomeoftheuseful
insectsandreleasethembecauseofhavingcollectedthemalive.Asaresultoftheexperimentsand
observations,brandofWispyMosquitoKillerdevicehasbeenfoundsuccessful.

COMPONENTSOFTHEEXPERMENTANDAPPLICATIONMETHOD
Luciliasericata(Greenbottlefly),vinegarflyandmosquitoeswereusedastestsubjectsinaseriesof
experimentperformedbetweenthedatesof11thand21stofApril,2011.AdevicenamedWispy
MosquitoKillerunderthebrandofCVSwasusedtocapturethetestsubjects.Aspecificallydesigned
lampwasusedonthisdevicetoattracttheflies.Experimentenvironmentwasarrangedlightproof
sothattheonlystimulusfortheinsectswaslightcomingthroughthedevice.Alsosomemeasures
weretakentopreventthetestsubjectsescapingfromexperimentenvironment.Itwaspaid
attentiontokeepthetestsubjectsinanenvironmentconditionthatwouldbeclosetotheirhabitats
asmuchaspossible;itwasaimedforthemtomovenaturallyasfaraspossiblebyprovidingtheir
basicneedssuchasnutrientandheat.
EXPERMENTRESULTS
CapturerateforLuciliasericataswasmeasuredbytwoexperimentsoftwohours.Thecapture
performanceofthedeviceWispyMosquitoKillerunderthebrandofCVSis87.5%underthose
conditions.
Inregardtotheexperimentsperformedwithmosquitoes,theexperimentsoftwohoursdidnot
reachasignificantresult;theexperimentofthreehoursperformedinanenvironmentwherevinegar
fliesandmosquitoesweretogetherreachedasignificantcaptureresult;capturerateinan
experimentwherethedeviceWispyMosquitoKillerunderthebrandofCVShadbeenonforaperiod
of15.5hoursovernightandthefirsthoursofthemorningwasover80%.
Theaveragecaptureperformancewas70.3%bytheexperimentsof2hoursandof3hours
performedwithvinegarflies.
