KONE UltraRope is considerably
lighter than conventional steel ropes
It has very high strength properties
and it is very durable.
KONE UltraRope is comprised of
several carbon fiber cores held
together by an epoxy matrix. The
cores are covered by a durable high
friction coating.
KONE UltraRope is held in place by
crowning and is capable of running
at extremely high speeds.
UltraRope has been tested at speeds
of 15 m/s, and can operate at speeds
over 20 m/s.

The Super Tall Towers of the World (highest architectural top), as
determined by CTBUH Height Criteria.

JEC 68

We noticed in the case study on Kingdom Tower, Jeddah, that a fair amount of the top of the
building seemed to be an unoccupied spire. This prompted us to investigate the increasing trend
towards extreme spires and other extensions of tall buildings that do not enclose usable space,
and create a new term to describe this: Vanity Height, i.e., the distance between a skyscrapers
highest occupiable floor and its architectural top, as determined by CTBUH Height Criteria.

JEC 71

Tower Structural System

The height of the Tower is 1006
meters above grade, with a height
to width aspect ratio of
approximately 11 at the tower
base.
The structural system for The
Kingdom Tower is comprised of a
highly efficient assembly of
concrete elements configured to
respond to the architectural form of
the building, while addressing the
rigorous design requirements of a
Super-tall Tower.

JEC 72

Tower Structural System

JEC 73

Resistance to lateral load is provided by a central triangular reinforced

concrete core augmented by three wings assemblies comprised of RC
corridor walls, fin/demising walls, and sloping end walls. These wings
assemblies extend approximately 36 meters from the tips of the triangular
core at the base of the Tower.

JEC 74

The architectural expression is created by sloping the end of each wing over the
height of the Tower.
Each of the three wings slope at slightly different angles to form three unique
and differing height spires at the top of the Tower.

JEC 75

JEC 76

The slopping ends and changing width of the wing

end over the height prevent the organization of wind
vortices along the height of the Tower. By preventing
or minimizing vortex correlation, aerodynamic wind
forces on the Tower are reduced.
In order to predict the full-scale wind pressure acting
on the building as a function of return period (870
years), the wind tunnel data were combined with a
statistical model of the local wind climate. The wind
climate model was based on local surface wind
measurements taken at Jeddah International Airport.
Ultimate design wind speed is 42.2 m/sec

Aero-elastic Wind Tunnel Test Model

JEC 77

Concrete compressive strength for

tower walls up to level 99 is 85 MPa at
90 days which is three times the
compressive strength for traditional
structures.
Concrete compressive strength is 75
MPa from level 100 to level 167, and 65
MPa up to the end of the concrete level
at 962 m height (level 240).
Reinforcing bars is grade 75 steel with a
yield strength of 520 MPa for the walls,
and grade 60 with a yield strength of
420 MPa for slabs and beams.
Mpa = Mega Pascal
KSI = Kilo pounds per Square Inch
PSI = Pounds per Square Inch

Piled Raft Foundation

Most advanced techniques, equipment,
materials, tools and construction procedures
were used to construct the 270 piles in one
of the most challenging and difficult
heterogeneous soil conditions that contain
cavities, voids and loose layers.
A robust Cathodic Protection system has
been used to prevent corrosion of
reinforcement steel against the severe and
corrosive environment (chloride and sulfate)
of the soil.
The fundamental of the Cathodic Protection
system that all steel reinforcement within
the piles and raft foundations are electrically
continuous.

JEC 107

Tower Raft

JEC 108

The reinforced concrete raft that is 5 meters thick under the 3 wings tips, and 4.5
meters thick in the central portion.
The Tower Raft is predominantly supported on the 270 piles relying on small
amount of sub-grade bearing .

Steel Reinforcement: 3,600 Ton (approx. 200 Kg/m3)

Concrete Volume: 18,260 m3

JEC 109

JEC 110

JEC 111

Structural Health Monitoring

JEC 112

The foundations of the tower incorporates a network of load cell and

strain gauge instrumentation that is serving as a means to monitor
the health of structural foundation elements (reinforced concrete
piles and raft slab) over the life of the building. This is an
extraordinary measure and seems prudent for such an iconic project
reaching unprecedented heights.

Horizontal and vertical

deformations occur during
construction due to different
internal and external effects
such as elastic, creep,
shrinkage strains, and wind
load should be taken into
consideration.

JEC 113

Core wall survey control system consists of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite
System) reference stations are designed to surround KT with an average
distance of 1 km from tower center point.
The references stations are connected to 3G internet connection, solar
power supply and WI-FI/ Radio broadcasting data stream.
Extreme height exceeding
1 kilometer, survey works
play a major role in
achieving such goal that
had never been reached
before in the history of
humanity within
acceptable designed
tolerances.

JEC 114

Tower Wall Compensation Program and Sequence Procedure

the 1 Km high tower is
discretized into 250 x 4 meter
high levels, with approx. 166
levels below the sky raft.
The analysis model groups
construction sequencing in
five-floor intervals, the result is
50 analysis stages. This
simplification is enacted to
provide a practical model setup
and keep the model size within
software limits, while still
providing rational and accurate
results.

JEC 115

The Tower central triangular core

is constructed first followed by the
Tower wings, and with slabs
poured shortly thereafter. This is
enacted in the model by activating
the wings one stage behind the
core.
Slabs are constructed one stage
behind the wings (that is, two
stages behind the core
construction).
The interface between the core
and wing walls is of a major
significance about differential
movements and corresponding
vertical compensation
requirements.

JEC 116

The distinction between the core and the wing walls ends at the Sky Raft
(Level 167, elevation 670). At this point, the Tower transitions to an all
exterior wall structure (the spire).

Podium Structure System

JEC 117

Outside the Tower footprint, 4 levels of podium structure is being

constructed above the existing grade.

Tower Base / Podium

Podium Structure System

JEC 118

Allowable soil bearing capacity is 75 ton/m2 (7.5 kg/cm2) for dead +

live loads is used for the foundation design (isolated footings).
Typical Podium parking level floors are to be constructed of
conventionally reinforced flat plate concrete slabs supported by
either columns or walls situated on a typical 9m by 9m grid.

Podium Structural System

Podium Structure Construction Sequence

JEC 119

The sequence of casting between the Tower and the Podium is designed to
allow the Tower to reach the maximum settlement prior to connecting
Tower slabs to podium slabs.

JEC 120

Area 1: Construction of the Podium Structure can proceed all together with the Tower
construction.
Area2: Construction of the Podium structure is defined by 80 m radius from the center
of the Tower to start after the Tower reaches Level 45.
Area 3: Construction of the area between the Tower and the expansion joint to be
postponed as late as possible.
