Discriminatory signs

Discriminatory signs

Also known as nummular dermatitis.

itchy macule with red scaly edge.

Pink, red or brown, round or oval patches that are


well defined and vary in size up to several cm.

Ring shaped, round or oval,

Dry cracked, bumpy, blistered or crusted surface.


May be itchy or asymptomatic; not infectious.

Common among chiidren, but affects all ages,

Mainly on lower leg.


Most common in middle age, but any age can be
affected.

Infection from zoophilic fungus - cats and dogs,

Less red and scaly or healed in the middle.


Contagious by contact,
Affects arms, legs, face or other exposed body
Discoid eczema may wax and wane ano persist for months areas.

C a n become secondariiy infected by bacteria,


s t a r t off from insect bite or scratch.

Management
Topical antifungal creams,
Infected pets should be treated.

Up to a dozen patches may appear that wax and


wane, and persist for weeks or months.
Management
Protect skin from injury and irritation.
Emoilients and potent topical steroids.
O r a l or topical antibiotics if infected.
O r a l antihistamines if itchy.
Short-term systemic steroids are rarely required,
O n resolution the skin can be normai, dark brown
