What is

Advanced
Coal

Technology ?
An advanced technology for
higher efficiency of coal use and it
also offers a better environmental
impact by reducing emission of
sulphur dioxide and nitrogen
dioxide.

Oxy-Combustion

OXY-FUEL COMBUSTION IS A
PROMISING NEAR-TERM
TECHNOLOGY FOR CO2 CAPTURE
AND STORAGE (CCS) FROM
PULVERIZED COAL (PC) FIRED
BOILERS FOR POWER OR
INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS WITH
ULTRA-LOW EMISSIONS.

The basic concept of oxycombustion is to replace the

combustion air with a mixture
of oxygen and recycled flue
gas and/or water for
temperature control. The
remainder of the flue gas, that
is not recirculated, is rich in
carbon dioxide and water
vapor, and is easily separated,
producing a stream of
CO2 ready for utilization or
sequestration.
6

In an oxy-combustion process, a pure

or enriched oxygen (O2) stream is
used instead of air for combustion. In
this process, almost all of the nitrogen
(N2) is removed from the air, yielding a
stream that is approximately 95 percent
O2. Hence, the volume of flue gas,
which is approximately 70 percent
carbon dioxide (CO2) by volume, from
oxy-combustion is approximately 75
percent less than from air-fired
combustion.

Supercritical Power Plant

Supercritical Power plants operate
at temperatures resulting in higher
efficiencies up to 46 percent for
supercritical plants and lower
emissions than traditional
(subcritical) coal-fired plants. The
"efficiency" of the thermodynamic
process of a coal-fired power
describes how much of the energy
that is fed into the cycle is
converted into electrical energy.
The greater the output of
electrical energy for a given
amount of energy input, the
higher the efficiency.

in an absorption tower

The absorbed CO2 must then

be stripped from
the amine solution
using large amounts of steam,
regenerating the solution
for recycle to
the absorption tower

It is then ready
to be piped for
use or to

CCS in
Indonesia

Indonesia is soon to conclude a prefeasibility study for a CCS pilot-scale

project linked to the Gundih gas field in
Central Java. This pre-feasibility
study has been developed by the
Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB)
in cooperation with Pertamina and
Kyoto University. It is being funded
through the Asian Development Banks
CCS Trust Fund (with funding from the
Global CCS Institute and UK
Government) and the Japan
International Cooperation Agency.

PROJECT
PLANS

The project
would capture
CO2 from
a natural gas refinery
and store it in
a depleted
oil reservoir
about 100 miles away

The project plans to

inject
approximately
50-100 tonnes
of CO2 per day for
several months,
from mid-2016

There are currently

no pipelines in
place, so the
CO2is likely to be
transported
via trucks at the
pilot-stage
18

There is potential
for the project
to be scaled up to
a demonstration
scale.
