Question #3:
i. What is the form and shape of the building?
Form:
3D
- Largest dome in Europe
-Extremely Stable ---hit by canonballs many times but bounced off and survived
A centralized building with:
- sandstone church erected on a comparatively small square base area.
- outline (lower part of church is in form of octagon)
The plan view showing the octagonal outline in the lower part of the church.
-four corner towers
- crowned by circular dome, a Bell shaped dome : 95 meter (311 ft) high and 23.5 m (77ft) diameter --"die Steinerne Glocke" or Stone Bell" with stone lantern
- 7 doors
- light facade is set off by a scattering of the original, darker-coloured stones across many parts of its
surface.

Looking at all these 3 models can really help us see the lower part of the church to have an octagonal
outline. It might look like it has more than 8 sides to this building but the octagon outline is created inside
the church.
Octagon outline showing in the inside. I made a dotted lines of an octagon to show how the octagon is
derived in the buidling.
So if we relate the model to the ground plan, we can see how the octagonal outline is made. Each tower
is one side, so that equals four sides already. Basically the octagon follows the seven doors plus the
front side of the church where the altar is, which then equals to 8 sides. I have made the diagram more
easier to understand by anotating it.
Section
- theres a circular nave : surrounded by galleries and covered by the inner dome.
- the dome is brightly painted which depicts the 4 virtues and 4 evangelist
- four storeys high
- bright white altar , reconstructed in 2000.
- Baroque decorations on altar show figure of Christ on the mount of lives
- ABove altar is the church of organ, decorated with equally sumptous Baroque ornamentation
The white altar on the front. You can see the figure of Christ as well as the organ on top.
The inner dome with the circular nave surrounded by galleries. Galleries are raised area, often having a
stepped or sloping floor, in a theater, church, or other public building to accommodate spectators,
exhibits, So as you can see in this picture, there are many people at the galleries looking down to the
bottom of the church.
ii. How the form or shape of building contributed in making the building historically significant
and meaningful?
- a symbol of reconcilation
- no special entrance because all visitors should feel equally welcome no matter where they come
from.)
- Old and new stones have been joined to give a clear, meaningful indication that the past is always
part of the future and that wounds can heal.
- the tower cross that covers the lantern was donated in the spirit of reconciliation by the British people
calls this replica of the old tower cross still displayed in the nave for peace.
- The evangelical concept of faith and church service
