The Analysis of Culture Shock in 99 Cahaya di langit Eropa Movie
Introduction
99 cahaya di langit Eropa is a film that tells about the life story of a husband and wife living in
Europe, they are Rangga and Hanum. Rangga is a young man from Indonesia who continued his
study at WU Vienna Austria while Hanum is an Indonesian journalist who accompanied her
Husband, Rangga, during studying in Europe.
Someone who lives in a new place will certainly experiences culture shock, it is experienced by
Rangga and Hanum. They experienced culture shock when they lived in Europe, they ought to be
able to adapt to European culture that has many differences with the Indonesian culture.
Background of study
Culture shock is a phenomenon that will be experienced by every person who crosses from one
culture to another as a reaction when moving and living with people who have different clothes,
taste, value, and even the language which owned by the person (Littlejohn, 2004; Kingsley and
Dakhari, 2006; Balmer, 2009)
Littlejohn, in the journal he wrote, state that culture shock is a natural phenomenon when people
be a guest or visit a new culture.
The Stages of Culture Shock
1. The Honeymoon Stage
The first stage of culture shock is often overwhelmingly positive during
which travelers become infatuated with the language, people and food in
their new surroundings. At this stage, the trip or move seems like the
greatest decision ever made, an exciting adventure to stay on forever.
2. The Frustration Stage
Frustration may be the most difficult stage of culture shock and is probably
familiar to anyone who has lived abroad or who travels frequently. At this

stage, the fatigue of not understanding gestures, signs and the language
sets in and miscommunications may be happening frequently. Small things
losing keys, missing the bus or not being able easily order food in a
restaurantmay trigger frustration. And while frustration comes and goes,
its a natural reaction for people spending extended time in new countries.
3. The Adjustment Stage
Frustrations are often subdued as travelers begin to feel more familiar and
comfortable with the cultures, people, food and languages of new
environments. Navigation becomes easier, friends and communities of
support are established and details of local languages may become more
recognizable during the adjustment stage.
4. The Acceptance Stage
Generallythough sometimes weeks, months or years after wrestling with
the emotional stages outlined abovethe final stage of culture shock is
acceptance. Acceptance doesnt mean that new cultures or environments
are completely understood, rather it signifies realization that complete
understanding isnt necessary to function and thrive in the new
surroundings. During the acceptance stage, travelers have the familiarity
and are able to draw together the resources they need to feel at ease.
Discussion
The Honeymoon Stage
Europe is a dreamland for everyone who wants to continue studying abroad,
someone who can take or continue the study in this place will certainly be
happy and proud. It was experienced by Rangga, he felt happy and proud
because he got a college scholarship S3 in Vienna University. Likewise
Hanum, she was very happy because she can accompany her husband living
in Vienna, hometown famous classic musician like Franz Peter Schubert and

Johann Strauss, every day when her husband was busy with lecture, Hanum
spent her time to explore every corner of the city of Vienna accompanied by
her beloved camera. Another thing that makes Rangga and Hanum happy
when first time living in Europe, they can visit the historical places of Muslims
in Europe.
The Frustration Stage
The major society of European people is non-Muslim, it makes Rangga difficult to get kosher
food and difficult to find worship place in his campus. Pork is a common food consumed by
European people, it makes the price of pork in Vienna very cheap compared to the price of
chicken, this matter makes Rangga canceled his wish when he wanted to buy chicken for
consumption because limited money he had and the price of chicken in the city is very
expensive, while the majority of students on his campus are Christians so there is no mosque to
be a place of worship there is only the Church.
Another difficulty faced by Rangga, when the exam was scheduled on Friday coincide with the
time of sholat jumat, it makes Rangga be confused because Rangga is pious Muslim but on the
other hand if Rangga does not follow the exam he is not going to be graduated in this year,
though Rangga already requested permission with the professor to replace the exam schedule on
another day but the professor does not give any permission, While Hanum had difficulty to get a
job because she is not fluent in German language.
The existence Hanum and Rangga in Vienna make uncomfortable for one of the people who lives
next them. There is someone that angry with Hannum when she was fraying ikan asin. He feels
uncomfortable with the smell of ikan asin fried by hanum.
The Adjustment Stage
At this stage Rangga and Hanum began to adapt with European culture, they began to try to eat
the bread as a daily meal and they began to close with their neighbors who had previously been
scolded Hanum when she was frying ikan asin. Their neighbor feel uncomfortable with the aroma
of ikan asin because he thinks it smelled like socks. One day Hanum gave a plate of mie goreng
ikan asin to her neighbor, than her neighbor eat it and it turns out he was hooked with mie goreng

ikan asin that make by Hanum, Even he ask to made again, this make Hannum and her neighbor
be closed.
After several years lives in Vienna Rangga and Hanum feel more comfortable in this city because
they meet with fellow Muslims and they can establish a good relationship, even there are some
Muslims who lived in Vienna considers Hanum and Rangga like his own family and help hanum
look for a job as a journalist. In this stage hanum was already able to speak fluently the German
language, because she followed a free course German language, it is motivation for Hanum to
get a job as a journalist.

The Acceptance Stage

Various problems experienced by Rangga and Hanum are processes for them to be able to
receive European culture when they lives there, In this stage Hanum and Rangga have been able
to receive European culture although Europe has very different culture from Indonesia. By time
and with hard struggle finally Hannum and Rangga able to receive the European culture. Theyve
been able to establish good relationships with the people around them and they've been able to
adapt with their new culture.
Conclusion
Someone who lives in new place will certainly experience the stages of culture shock. that is a
natural thing, because every place has a different culture compared to the origin culture and need
a long time to accept a new culture, this condition is experienced by Rangga and Hanum when
they was living in Vienna. Need a long time for Rangga and Hanum to adapt or accept European
culture and it was not easy because European culture has many different with Indonesian culture,
in terms of food, season, religion and culture. European culture is very different from Indonesian
culture, but by time and with hard struggle finally Rangga and Hanum can accept European
culture without losing their culture of origin, namely Indonesia. Therefore we as a human who do
not know our future and dont know where we will live in the future, than start from now we
should try to accept the differences culture around us, whether it's the difference of religion,

nature and others, we as human should respect and appreciate the difference culture because so
many shades of cultures in this worlds.
