town roa d and live d there for seven years Our
house was a fram e o n e and had si x rooms My

As the boys grew up th ey helped her
and we were always comfortable
T wo years before my father died he lost all he had

thro u gh the B enet of the Act o r going secu r ity

for o n e O f h i s f r iends After that we were left in a
d estitute condition because h e was two years sick
an d nine months stone blind and d ied of a nervous
fever
When my brothe r William was twenty v e h e took
a sh e p ; an d wh en I was nine years O ld I began to wo r k
for him wo u n d yarn
And there a m ong th ese

for th ey were all Catholics you k n ow ; well then I
began to think th ere was a better way to live even

don t know I don t know and she d say W hat

in the wo r ld c an I get for you that ll make you stop

I don t want anything ; I don t

an d I say

k n ow wh at s the m att er with m e !

Well she said

Now
i f I didn t stop cr yi n she d have to whip m e
I began to go out in the back lane and sit down o n a

stone a place t o get up in the wagon w i th and I

used to set th ere to see people go by that I thought
were so be autif u l These were the Methodist people
,

g o in over t o the O ld brick ch u r ch ; and I guess I must

h ave went there every Sunday morning for over three

months for th ese people didn t go by there any

other t i me SO then I b egan to fret more than ever
beca u se these p eop l e looked so good and it was all

brother and sister

brother and sister and I used
to wonder wh o i n th e world their fat h er was I
thought he must have a lot O f children And it wor

And I neve r felt so highly

And I told her to put her foot up o n my knee but

she said N 0 ; not at all t h at wouldn t do

Mv
idea was to get h er j ust as close to me as I could you

and I tied it After I tied i t she said D arlin where

do you go to Sabbath school !

I says I go do wn

Fourt h st r eet to St Augustine s Church

She says

She says to i n c j u st this way

I

And th en

I couldn t have been much more than nine years O ld
then ; and it wor r ied me for weeks
One day my mother was in a pretty go o d mood

love to go to that Sunday school up at Co h o ek si n k

Then is when my trouble co m m enced She says

Well you can t do that you can go to yer o wn

That was the rst salutation I had to be very cau

But o u t onto the stone 1 went again o n Sunday

And all the satisfaction I got was

Well I settled o n that
