footballerandfootballmanager.Heisalsoknownbyhisnickname,Gazza.He
earned57capsduringhisEnglandcareerandhasbeendescribedbytheNational
FootballMuseumas"themostnaturallygiftedEnglishmidfielderofhis
generation".[2]
BornandraisedinGateshead,themidfieldersignedschoolboytermswith
NewcastleUnited,beforeturningprofessionalwiththetoptier(prePremier
Leaguecreation)clubin1985.ThreeyearslaterhewassoldontoTottenham
Hotspurfora2.2millionfee.HewontheFACupwithSpursin1991,beforehe
wassoldtoItalianclubLaziofor5.5millionthefollowingyear.InJuly1995,he
wastransferredtoRangersfor4.3million,andhelpedtheclubtotwoleague
titlesandtwotrophies.HereturnedtoEnglandina3.4millionmoveto
MiddlesbroughinMarch1998.HemadehisdebutinthePremierLeagueinthe
199899season,havingalreadyfeaturedinthe1998FootballLeagueCupFinal.
HeswitchedtoEvertoninJuly2000,andlaterhadspellswithBurnley,Gansu

HewaspartoftheEnglandsquadthatreachedfourthplaceinthe1990FIFA
WorldCup,wherehewasreducedtotearsafterreceivingayellowcardinthe
semifinalwithWestGermany,whichmeanthewouldhavebeensuspendedfor
thefinalitselfhadEnglandwonthegame.Healsohelpedtheteamtothesemi
finalsofUEFAEuro1996,scoringagoalagainstScotlandwhichwasdescribed

Afterretiringfromprofessionalfootball,hislifebecamedominatedbyhismental
andemotionalproblems,particularlyhisalcoholism.Hispersonalstruggleshave
receivedregularcoverageintheBritishpress,especiallysinceleaving
professionalfootball.Hehasattemptedtolivewithoutalcoholonnumerous
occasions,thoughrehabilitationprogrammeshaveprovidedonlytemporaryrelief.
Hisproblemsendedhiscoachingcareer,andhehasnotworkedinfootballsince
beingfiredasthemanagerofKetteringTownin2005.
