TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL
NEWSLETTER Tel. 01829 733496

Survey sparks
concern over
village speeds
A while back in April, the Parish Council arranged for
a Speed Indicator Device (SID) to be used in Tarporley
to educate people about the speeds they were driving
at as they entered the village – a matter we, along with
other villages in the rural areas, have been concerned about for some time.
The device was manned by volunteers, including members of the Parish Council, on the main
roads into the village, and as vehicles approach the SID their speed was shown on the screen.
As the screen is clearly visible to drivers as they approach, it is primarily an education device,
and not one for recording the speeds that people normally drive along these roads.
However recognising this, the analysis of the speeds recorded is of great concern. During the
10 day period, 1390 vehicles were captured by the SID and 53% of them were being driven at
30 mph and over in the 30 mph area, with 2% being driven at 47-60 mph.
The highest speed was recorded on Utkinton Road early one evening, and in fact that was
the road with the highest percentage of people driving over 36 mph (40% during the early
evening recording session). The other roads with the next highest percentages were, in
descending order, Birch Heath Road, Nantwich Road and Rode Street.
This all leads the Parish Council to request further use of the SID, and to request the PCSO
and the police to carry out more speed traps, so as to make our roads safer places on which to
travel, whether we are in a vehicle on the road or walking on the pavement.

FOCUS ON DOMANIE CROLLA, OF MD GLAMOROUS, ORGANIC BEAUTY SALONS

Dom strives to stay

ahead of the rest
At the age of 16, Dom’s problems at school led her
to enrol at Steiner Beauty School in London, rather
than go down the traditional route of sixth form and
university. And, although moving to the capital was
daunting at first, she soon adapted and began to
master her chosen profession.
When her training concluded she realised that not
only had she learned a trade, she had also discovered a
passion for making ladies look and feel glamorous.
On returning to her home county two years ago she
decided, despite the economic meltdown, to take the
plunge and set up her own beauty business. Her brave
attitude and confidence in her abilities led her to acquire
not just one, but two beauty salons, both of which were in
dire need of a facelift.
She set about refurbishing and reinventing the salons,
located in Tarvin and Tarporley, and established MD
Glamorous, specialising in treatments using a new and
exciting range of high quality, organic beauty products Domanie Crolla
that she knew would appeal to her clientele in the area.
Quality

Football fever
at village fete
THE weather was kind to the organisers
of the St Alban’s fete, at Tattenhall Park
School field last month.
It was certainly an improvement on last
year when the heavens opened, forcing
the event to be postponed for a week.
This time the sun shone and there was a
patriotic feel in the air ahead of England’s
first game against the USA.

Tarporley High School &
Sixth Form College
School joins stampede for rhino mania
IN early July Chester will be
in the grip of Rhino Mania! Up
to 70 stunning rhinos created
by artists, community groups
and schools will flood the city
with colour and excitement,
stampeding onto the streets as
the city comes alive like never
before.
Tarporley High School and Sixth
Form College, together with
our Partner Primary Schools,
collectively known as the
Sandstone Partnership, have
submitted ‘Meg’ an adult Rhino
and the Primary Schools are all
linked to nine baby rhinos (all
the rhinos will have the signature
footprints, somewhere on their
body!).
Meg is a very special animal
symbolising the school, the
wider community and the county
itself. Most of all she represents
the equilibrium the school try to
achieve in the modern world.
The school is twinned with a
school in South Africa, with
whom they share a desire for
peace and equality, as well as
blue sky and green grass. These
are the things that anchor both communities to the planet itself, and reminds the school of our
responsibility to preserve nature (the rhino), but at the same time try to produce wealth from the
land with careful stewardship (the Friesian cow and the green wellingtons).
Tarporley High School students played an important and active part in the creation of ‘Meg’ and
Mr Bill Voyce, teacher at the school, put his artistic talents to full use to create a wonderful piece
of artwork. The photograph shows ‘Meg’ calling into school and smelling the flowers outside
reception before she set off on her journey to join all the other rhinos in Chester

Tarporley ‘swishing’ a success for Water Aid

A MASSIVE total of £5,000 was raised for the charity Water Aid at a bring and buy event in
Tarporley.
Lisa Daniel opened up her home in Forest Road for the event and was amazed when over
150 people turned up with nearly new goods to sell.
Lisa chose the charity Water Aid because it was a cause championed by her late husband
Conal, who died a year ago.
“Conal died of renal cancer on 14th May 2009 but he was always keen to support Water Aid
through his company, so I decided to carry on the good work,” said Lisa
“I’d like to thank everyone who supported the swishing party and made it such a great
success.”

HEALTH AND BEAUTY with Angela Bartlett

Q. Help! I have very puffy skin below my eyes. What can I do to

reduce the puffiness?
A. This question is asked so frequently that I have decided to give an
extended answer to your question.
The solution to puffy eyes will depend very much on the cause of the
puffiness. If you have always had puffy eyes, this may indicate that you
are genetically predisposed to having fatty deposits in this area; or, the
puffiness could be a result of ageing when the fat pads beneath the skin
start to shift altering the eye contour. In both of these instances there is
really is no cure other than with surgery.
However, if your eyes aren’t usually puffy and you awake to find your
under eye area is swollen, this type of puffiness is related
to inflammation. Firstly, you need to apply something to
reduce the swelling. Cold compresses are a good, quick and
inexpensive solution because cold causes swollen skin to
contract. Soak cotton wool pads or a piece of clean cloth
in cold (not icy cold) water, or apply a gel-filled eye mask
from the refrigerator.
Cold cucumber slices are also helpful, but they work
because they are cool, not because they have any magical
ingredient. You can also apply used, cooled tea bags, Angela Bartlett is a beauty and

Council enforcers take to the streets
THE Council’s new Community
Enforcement Team has
notched up its first month
tackling problems on the area’s
streets.
At the end of May front line
staff from several services
across the Council, including
community safety, street scene
and parking, came together
as one multi-skilled team in a
totally new way of working.
Council leader Cllr Mike Jones
met members of the team in
Tarporley, where although
there is a low crime, there
are instances of anti-social
behaviour, dog fouling and
littering for them to deal with.

Style duo on a mission

Two young Tarporley entrepreneurs are setting out
on a mission to bring fashion to local teenagers with
the launch of a brand new business.
Caz Moss and Rachel Murray are co-founders of
Neon Prospects, who are putting on an exciting new
series of holiday workshops, called Style Factory,
aimed at giving teenagers an insight into a career in
the fashion industry. The courses will bring youths
aged 13- 17 in contact with fashion and media
professionals for a week of hands on interactive Rachel and Caz
activities at Blakemere Craft Centre, Sandiway.
Style Factory will focus on all different aspects of the fashion industry through different
workshops. Subjects covered include Trends: Catwalk to High Street, Sketching
Masterclass and Sewing Techniques.
Thirty chosen Style Factory participants will also get the chance to take part in an extra
week long ‘Create Your Own Fashion House’ course at the end of August.
“We love fashion and realised that young people are really interested in it too but don’t
always believe they can actually choose it as a worthwhile career option,” explains Rachel.
Caz continues “You don’t have to be Stella McCartney to work in the industry. We just hope
the courses will inspire people and help them see just how achievable working in the media
and fashion industry can be.”
Call Rachel on 07841 870406 or visit www.neonprospects.com

tional exhibition of Wildlife Art has gained
a prestigious reputation for superb quality
and an amazingly varied display of artwork.
This is an annual open exhibition, promoting
and displaying works by the best amateur and

share a love of art and a passion for wildlife.

year to conservation charities.

there will be a special Wildlife Awareness Day
when experts from Born Free, R.S.P.B., The
Wildlife Trust, Martin Mere Wetland Centre,
Raptor Rescue, The Woodland Trust and
Badger Rescue will be at the exhibition to
demonstrate and answer questions. Artists will
also be there to demonstrate and there will be
live birds on display. This is a day not to be
missed with may famous artists and celebrities
in attendance.
The Exhibition is at Gordale Garden
Centre, Chester High Road, Wirral CH64

Bunbury WI
We had an inspiring & amusing evening in June when Jane Shepherd told us about her
very busy life in television & radio, despite the fact that as a baby she had contracted
polio. Sonia McCann is to update us about the Vine Project in July, followed by Irene
Cunliffe in August, when both success & failure in amateur dramatics will be revealed.
We are hoping for good weather when our Village Day takes place & our WI provide
those essential cakes with a refreshing cup of tea. One of our members has organised
keep fit classes for the over 55s which should now be well under way.
A Summer Lunch is planned for August.

Peckforton & Beeston WI

Since last month’s magazine several members
enjoyed a trip to the Lake District. We stayed
in Grasmere and the weather remained fine
enabling us to go for several walks to explore
the local area. The attached photograph was
taken halfway up Dodds Summit.
The weather could not have been better for
our Garden Party on June 2nd at the home
of Helen Kerr. We were celebrating our 50th
Birthday Party and Libby Warrinor prepared
an excellent salad lunch, which was followed
by an array of puddings contributed by various
members. Before the cake was cut.
There is a meeting is on 7th July when Nicky Dakin will talk on ‘Life with the Beehive’ and
August 4th will be an outing to Haddon Hall in Derbyshire. September will bring a talk by ex
pilot Barry Smith entitled ‘Tiger Moths to Jumbos.’
Our walking group and book club continue to meet regularly so why not come and join us at
the Peckforton Village Rooms with meetings starting at 7.30pm? For more information please
