Built on an expansive, sloping site situated in the northern part of Brno, Mies van der Rohes Villa
Tungendhat is a masterful example of 20th-century residential architecture. Since its seizure in
World War II, the house has endured a long period of decline and relative obscurity, a former
shade of itself. Painstakingly renovated over a number of years, its three levels and full-height
glass walls have now regained their former lustre, gorgeously framed by the camera of esteemed
Japanese photographer Yoshio Futagawa. As he writes in his accompanying text, clad in
luxury that is almost impossible to duplicate, the house is a crystallization of modern
architectural principles.

sustainable approach is expressed in an altar made of scrap lumber and chair fabric made from

Recreating Amsterdam

Thanks to the activity of Stadsherstel Amsterdam, founded in 1956, the post-war wave of
renovation not only preserved the historic centre of Amsterdam, it became in the meantime a
current vibrant metropolis, in cultural and social sense. A city whose rich history still can be seen
and which is attractive in this way for living, working, studying, business, and cultural recreation.
Meanwhile Stadsherstel increased their working area and advises also abroad. The Stadsherstel
formula is successful and an example for many other heritage rescuers elsewhere in the world.
That was one of the reasons to create a book that combines graphic design and Amsterdam
architecture in detail.

Monu 25 - Independent Urbanism

Board Publishers 2016 no ISBN Acqn 26869
Pb 20x27cm 128pp 140ills 60col 16.50
The various phenomena impacting cities of countries that have become newly independent is the
focus of this issue. It examines, for instance, the remodelling of Skopje, Macedonia, according to
an image of the city that never existed as such, as well as the major struggles cities face in
finding their new identity, as seen in Prishtina, Kosovo. In an interview with Bart Lootsma, Dijana
Vuini describes how preserving identity within cultures that desire to join the EU, such as
Montenegro, is one of their biggest challenges. A photo essay by Arnis Balcus expands on how
public monuments and spaces stoke controversial issues and collective traumas, and yet the
dreams of a more hopeful younger generation persist in the series by Julia Autz.

communicates his personal understanding of the multiple ways of thinking about architecture,
urbanism, the world, and more through a series of stick figures with dialogue balloons. Each

The World Of Architect Kazunari Sakamoto

Lixil 2016 ISBN 9784864800242 Acqn 26770
Hb 23x30cm 230pp 225ills 75col 82.50
This volume introduces the architecture of Kazunari Sakamoto through drawings, photographs,
and text, yet does this using a special mixture of variously sized images made by both
professionals and amateurs. Some were taken directly following a buildings completion, while
others were made decades later; some are in colour, others are black and white. Texts by the
editor are interspersed with fragments of the architects own words describing the architecture,
the criticisms of others, and analysis from the period when a particular project was built. In this
way the books format acts in concert with that of Sakamotos architecture, a coexistence and
diversity of relationships.

everyday in an aesthetically pleasant and refined manner. For this book he has written twenty
diffuse and multifaceted texts that offer both personal reflections on completed projects and his

Atelier Bow-wow - Commonalities Of Architecture

Tu Delft 2016 ISBN 9789461866769 Acqn 26898
Pb 21x21cm 36pp 41ills 37col 16.50
Each year the Wouter Mikmak Foundation invites a designer to lecture for the series Designers
of the Future. This publication presents that of the Tokyo-based office Atelier Bow-Wow, founded
in 1992 by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima. Their vision calls for a shift in
architectural design from individuality based to commonality based, through the notion of
architectural behaviorology. Behaviour in this sense is an inclusive term that not only denotes
human practice, but also a buildings behaviour as material typology, as well as phenomena
produced by natural elements like light, air, heat, and water. An architecture based on
commonalities is key to their discussion.
