Systems

Low Power Embedded Systems: Hardware, Software, and

Applications Tutorial
Speakers Chander Bhushan Goel, Texas Instruments; Dr. K. Rajan,
IISc, Bangalore; and Mr. Vasant, Cranes Software
Embedded systems are found in all walks of life starting from the toothbrush to
electronic meters to automotives. Most embedded systems run on battery power.
Maintenance of the batteries is either difficult or impossible in most applications.
Changing batteries is also undesirable from the viewpoint of the environment. Modern
semiconductor technology has design techniques have evolved to meet the power
challenge. Power management is used to reduce power dissipation in both normal and
standby modes of operation. Software is written to take advantage of low-power modes
of operation to accomplish the task under time constraints. In this tutorial, a
comprehensive overview of low power design techniques will be provided. The tutorial
will include demonstration of software techniques and applications of the Texas
Instruments MSP430 microcontroller.

Panel Discussion on Teaching Low Power Embedded Systems in

Indian Universities Challenges and Solutions
Where does a course on Low Power Embedded System Design belong
in a UG or PG curriculum? How can we address the interdisciplinary
nature of the course? What training is necessary to empower faculty
members? What opportunities exist for graduates specializing in
low-power embedded systems? What are the industrys needs? The panel
will discuss these issues and more! Audience participation is encouraged.

Moderator C.P. Ravikumar, Texas Instruments

Panelists Panelists include C.R. Venugopal, Chairman, Board of Studies, VTU;
Sumedha Limaye, Program Manager for Microcontroller Development, Texas
Instruments;
