global economic activities including waterborne trading, international migration, tourism, energy exploration, land recreation, coastal protection take place. Asia represents the fastest
growing centre for reclamation & dredging where total dredging
turnover has been the highest globally with many mega projects in recent years.
The growing demands for construction and maintenance of
maritime infrastructure however represent challenges throughout Dredging & Land Reclamation projects, such as how to
improve the effectiveness in management of dredged materials beneficial reuses; overcoming geotechnical & geophysical
issues and prevention of environmental risks in order to deliver
Dredging & Land Reclamation projects successfully on time and
within budget.
This year, the 6th Dredging & Land Reclamation Asia Summit
welcome you to explore this opportunity for ports, harbours
and engineering contractors to discuss and share their proven
experiences, practices and case studies in overcoming defining
challenges, enabling effective implementation, monitoring and
delivering of your Dredging and Reclamation projects.

PRE SUMMIT WORKSHOPS 2 August 2015, Tuesday

Workshop A: 9:00am 12:00pm

Workshop B: 1.30pm 4.30pm

Comprehensive Planning of Site Investigation for Dredging
& Land Reclamation Projects

Identifying beneficial reuses of dredged materials is vital

process for port operators and dredging contractors for
various rationales, beside legal requirements. In some
countries, supplies of materials for reclamation are highly
limited which gives rise to the rationales of effective
recycling technologies that turn sediments into usable
uncontaminated materials for various construction
purposes. In other countries, dumping materials without
proper inspection of toxic levels means breaching of
regulation and resulting in actual long-term environmental and health-related risks. In overall, confined dumping
ground or open-air disposal are undeniably unsustainable solutions in near future across levels.

Thorough site investigation of dredging and reclaiming

sites happen whenever dredging project is carried out
and contribute significant in risk management, without
which project designers risk unexpected and unbudgeted
costs due to unforeseen conditions, especially in capital
maintenance. Almost all delays in projects as well as unexpected costs happened due to the inadequacy in site
investigation.

Implications of Environmental Effectiveness on Choices of Dredging

Techniques and Types of Dredgers

Reusing dredged materials allows operators to reduce costs in reclamation projects; or

turn them into a source of profit; reduce reliance on sands and dumping ground especially materials supplies are inadequate. Although numerous solutions have been employed
in managing and recycling dredged sediments, most only allow indented use on clean
sediments which require proper and sophisticated processing due to high levels of
organic contamination or soluble salts. In this section we will explore a useful framework
for determining the most suitable management alternatives in processing dredged
materials as well as evaluation of sediment contamination benchmarks.

Environmental impacts occur across any phase of dredging which cause damages not
only the dredged site but also the surrounding areas and even efficiency of subsequent
phases. Not only does dredging operation impact sediment resuspension, for example,
but the dredged soils could become inconsistently diluted during transportation. Its
therefore critical to have sound understanding of environmental characteristics of dredging site and potential seriousness of environmental impacts dredgers of choice will result
in. In this section we hear different environmental factors to be considered while making
effective choice of dredging fleet, which are vitally important for low-impact projects:
Understanding the suitability between types of dredgers and the sites natural
characteristics of the site and its surrounding areas how dredgers impact the
following factors in different working site

Review categories of innovative and latest beneficial reuse and technologies: Analyses of associated costs, required technologies, potential environmental impacts
and benefits
Making decision on cost-effective options to handle large quantities of dredged
materials in large quantities in long-terms utilisation of ranking criteria
Impact of permits requirements on processing facilities and operations

PANEL DISCUSSION:
Practical Approaches for Reducing Emission from Dredging Fleet,
Improve Technological, Financial and Social Feasibility

In marine engineering projects one of the greatest challenges is to actually reduce

carbon footprint, not just on paper. Not only does upgrading equipment and emission
control practice mean complying effectively to international law and regulations in the
industry, but also to benefit economically from energy usage and to gain community
support. Dredging emission nevertheless has seen a significant increase across factors
from 2005 to 2012 despite lower Sulfur fuel, due mainly to the increased simultaneous
maintenance-and-deepening dredging. In this discussion, we explore what standard
and universal sustainable energy and emission control criteria mean to dredging project
designers and managers.

POST SUMMIT WORKSHOPS 5 August 2015, Friday

Workshop C: 9:00am 12:00pm

Workshop D: 1.30pm 4.30pm

Building Integrated Risk Management Strategies to Ensure
Successful Project Delivery

Dredgers vary in types and shapes and often chosen according to contractors and site conditions requirements.
The more information prepared the more appropriate
dredgers/dredging fleet could be selected effectively so
as to fit with the requirements for the project. Nonetheless, in Asian contexts its common that in new dredging
projects, especially small-scale ones, project designers
often face challenges in lack of available data in site investigation, sophisticated needs for dredging equipment
and cost-effective choices of equipment. Appropriate site
investigation is part of the important criteria in deciding
dredging equipment but what else are the missing information often neglected?

Its often found that risk management has been often

seen as a for-compliance process, instead of being considered as an integrated and crucial management and
monitoring criteria to ensure enterprise-wide effect. Project designers and managers often base risk assessment
on experience with no consistent methods and techniques for immediately identifying, analysing, evaluating,
reporting and mitigating risks, which consequently result
in large deviation between planned deliverables and actual delivery of the projects, and worse contractual relationship, corporate resilience against risks, financial and
reputational positions. This workshop has been carefully
designed based on market-researched understanding of
the highly demanding consultation in managing successful dredging & land reclamation projects.
