MTC musical brings holidays to the stage

A Christmas Story, The Musical to take place at William Allen Middle School starting Dec. 9
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
For the second time in
Moorestown Theater Company
history, Mark Morgan will direct
a performance of A Christmas
Carol, The Musical. In doing so,
two casts will take part in eight
performances of the Christmas
classic.
The two casts are known as the
Black Cast and the Gold Cast, and
all performances will take place
at William Allen Middle School
located at 801 N. Stanwick Road.
The Black Cast will perform on
Friday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m., Saturday,
Dec. 10 at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 17
at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 18 at
2 p.m. The Gold Cast will perform
on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m., Saturday,
Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. and on Sunday,
Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.
When you combine one of the
greatest stories ever written by
Charles Dickens with a gorgeous
score by Allen Menken, who also
scored Beauty And The Beast,
The Little Mermaid, Aladdin,
Little Shop Of Horrors, plus a
55-member, all-ages cast ranging
from 7 to 79, there is not a better
local way for families to celebrate
the holidays and get into the holiday spirit than to come see A

LINDSEY NOLEN/The Sun

Tommy Kerwick of Mt. Laurel, left, and David Aberant of Moorestown are both cast as Tiny Tim in the
Moorestown Theater Companys production of A Christmas Carol, The Musical.
Christmas Carol, The Musical by
the Moorestown Theater Company, Morgan said.
The production will also feature a live 13-piece orchestra conducted by Steve Schaffner. The

crew has worked hard since auditions began Sept. 13, with rehearsals beginning Oct. 2.
During the audition process,
actors were asked to sing a song
the character they were interest-

ed in playing sings in the show.

For example, anyone interested in
playing Scrooge was to sing a
song the character famously
sings.
All potential cast members also

learned an audition dance combination, but if someone wanted to

be in the chorus, they did not
have to audition and sing by
themselves. Standing apart from
other theaters, no one is ever
cut during an MTC audition
process.
After auditions ended and
parts were secured, it was determined two Tiny Tims would be
played by David Aberant of
Moorestown and Tommy Kerwick of Mt. Laurel. Additionally,
the renowned character of
Ebenezer Scrooge was to be
played by Moorestowns Steve
Gionta. This performance will be
especially special to Gionta because his wife will be in the chorus and will also be helping with
hair and makeup, and his stepdaughter will be playing the
Ghost of Christmas Future Yet to
Be in the Black Cast. He said getting to perform alongside his family is rewarding, especially
around the holidays, a time to celebrate family.
Im also excited to play
Scrooge because the character really captures the essence of conversion and the power of the holiday season in bringing out the
best in people, Gionta said. I

DEC. 7 -13, 2016 THE MOORESTOWN SUN 11

Moorestown Appearance Committee

hopes for flower bed upgrades
Last major streetscaping on Main Street was 20 years ago
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
The
purpose
of
the
Moorestown Appearance Committee has always been to give advice on all architectural and aesthetic aspects within town. In
keeping with this goal, members
of the committee were present at
the Town Council meeting on
Monday, Nov. 28 to discuss the
flower bed situation on Main
Street.
At the meeting, Gina Zegel,
vice chair of the committee, and
Steve Chepurny stood before
council while chairperson Karen
Chigounis sat in the audience. Together, Zegel and Chepurny presented a synopsis of whats been
going on the last few years and included a proposal that renovations be made to the many plant
beds on Main Street.
Zegel recalled that the last
major streetscaping took place in
1996, and its results were beautiful, supported by residents and it
lasted for awhile. Yet 20 years
later, much of this work has deteriorated, especially in terms of
the hardscaping and drastically
in the planted material.
What we have done is come up
with a plan to try to fix the hard-

scaping where its problematic,

and also add to the plant material, Zegel said. This presentation
to council is the culmination of
the Appearance Committee work
that included site inventory, going
to each plot and inventorying
whats in the plot, meetings and
conversations with members of
the Business Association, the
Moorestown Garden Club and the
Moorestown Tree Committee.
The proposal was separated
into several parts, and the committee asked council to treat each
part as a separate request, but it
also expressed that each part is
equally needed.
Part one would include the remediation of seven planted areas
where people open their car
doors, which then bang into the
blue slate surrounding the flower
plots.
The second part of the proposal involved planting trees. After
discussions with the Tree Committee, including chair Josh Gibson, it was determined that new
trees that are both low maintenance and disease resistant are
ideal for planting; the Armstrong
Red Maple and Hackberry were
suggested. The tree planting project would also include the removal of overgrown, high main-

tenance perennial trees.

The third phase would involve
developing a Main Street curbside planter maintenance plan
that would include an early
spring cleanup and a late spring
planting or refreshing of mulch,
and the same for early fall and
late fall.
That would take care of all the
leaves that got caught in the bushes, and refreshing everything and
pulling the last bit of weed out,
Zegel said.
Part four would deal with organic weed killer and ridding the
soil of weeds. Zegel said part of
this problem has to do with business owners not sweeping the
street off when soil is created by
leaves mulching naturally.

As the end of 2016 comes into

sight, the Department of Parks
and Recreation is busily preparing for the beginning of 2017. One
of the most noteworthy events of
the new year is the 3rd Annual
Special Needs Providers Fair.
This event has been recognized as
the premiere event of its kind in
southern New Jersey.
The event will be held Sunday,
Jan. 29, at the Moorestown
Church Street Recreation Center
on the 3rd Floor, located at 111 W.
Second St. from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
This event is free and open to the
public. For exhibitors, the cost is
$35 per space, which includes a 6foot by 2.5-foot table, tablecloth
and one or two chairs. Each company or organization will be featured in the 2017 Providers Packet, which will not only be provided to families who attend but also

will be distributed to those on the

special needs recreation mailing
list.
Making its debut in 2015, the
Special Needs Providers Fair has
become a beacon of hope for families of special needs individuals,
providing resources for those
with special needs. Since its inaugural year, the Special Needs
Providers Fair has grown in
scope and services offered. Last
year, more than 300 people attended the fair and visited the more
than 40 vendors there. Businesses and organizations providing
services ranging from educational to social and emotional were
present. This year, already more
than half of the spaces are filled
with independent businesses,
state services and non-profit
providers.
This year, the Department of
Parks and Recreation will be
highlighting its own special
needs programs to include

S.M.A.S.H., special family outing

events and the return of social
skills classes will take place in
January and February. Additionally, some of the providers who
will be present include DS&A,
DVRS, DDS, MJ KIDZ, Alexander's Vision Community Services,
The Arc of Burlington County,
Flyers Youth Special Hockey,
Marlton Sports Unity Program,
Oaks Integrated Care, Community Options, Kingsway Learning

s the holiday shopping season

is now officially underway, police departments across the
country are on high alert. Thats because, at this time of year, unfortunately, criminals are everywhere looking to take advantage of unassuming
shoppers who are just trying to enjoy
the season.
The criminals go out to malls, downtown shopping areas and other retail
hotspots just like the rest of us but
they, instead, are after the goods were
buying, and the cash and cards that
were carrying.
Its scary. And its sad. But its a reality of the world in which we live.

peer sites such as Craigslist so commonplace, were glad to see that local
police departments are stepping in to
help the honest shoppers as best they
can.
Local police departments have recently begun to make a program available to the residents of town called
safe zones some with areas inside
of the police department building and
some right outside, where people can
conduct legal peer-to-peer transac-

tions. The locations are often equipped

with security cameras that will record
all activity in the zones, 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. The launch of
safe zones are timely, of course, with
these types of transactions becoming
more popular at this time of year.
Police departments play a huge role
in making people feel safe. Their job is
not just to pull drivers over and arrest
criminals.
We couldnt be happier about the
safe zones programs in towns that
offer it, and we urge police departments in other towns to offer similar
programs. If other towns do offer the
safe zones program, please remind
your residents of it, and urge them to
use it.

Napolitano and Locatell
thankful to serve on council
With the tallying of absentee and provisional ballots now complete, we would like
to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the voters for electing us to be part of Town Council for the next four years.
Both of us are humbled and honored by
the confidence placed in our vision for
Moorestowns future, and we pledge to
work hard every single day to serve this
community with the energy, passion and
commitment it deserves. From the bottom
of our hearts, we thank the people of
Moorestown for giving us the opportunity
to serve the town we love, and we are keenly aware of the great responsibility we
now face to deliver results.
We are thankful beyond words to our
families, and know that our success would
never have been possible without their
willingness to stand behind us with unconditional love and unyielding support over
the last nine months.

As we thank our families, we must also

extend a huge thank you to our energetic, determined team of campaign volunteers who made thousands of phone calls,
knocked on thousands of doors, helped
with campaign mailings, hosted events,
and gave their time and labor to help us
succeed. Each and every one of you gave
us the drive to keep going through the
highs and lows of this campaign, and for
that, we are eternally grateful.
We would like to take a moment to recognize and thank our dear friend and running mate, Phil Garwood, who has dedicated countless hours spanning decades in
service to Moorestown as mayor, deputy
mayor, councilman, community leader,
and volunteer. We thank his wonderful
wife, Laura, and his daughters for their
willingness to join Phil on this journey,
and while the results were not what we
had hoped, we are sure that Phil and his
family will continue contributing and
serving our town in many ways for years
to come.
We congratulate Councilwoman Lisa

Petriello on her successful run, and we

look forward to serving with her and with
Councilwoman Stacey Jordan and Councilman Manny Delgado come January.
With the election behind us, our town
must now come together so we can continue moving forward on a path of fiscal responsibility, good government and a respect for our communitys heritage as we
build a better tomorrow. During the next
four years, we will ensure that Town Council Chambers will be a place for intelligent
discourse, the exchange of ideas and getting things done for the incredible people
of this community. Our time is now,
Moorestown lets get to work.

Committee
hopes to start
with cleanup
COMMITTEE
Continued from page 11
Part five involves continuing to
revive Main Street and entails establishing streetside plots from
Church Street past Chester Avenue. The underplanting of trees
or the planting of small shrubs
and weeping shrubs for 70 plots
down this section of the street
would be needed. This would require a small budget, which the
Appearance Committee estimated at $9,300. Along with this estimate, the Appearance Committee
also included budget estimates in
its proposal for all other phases.
If you add up the brick work,
the hardscaping and the maintenance for next year you come to a
total of $14,203.95, and that includes spraying for the weeds.
Then if you add the budget of
$9,300 to it, but keep it separate, it
comes to $23,000, Zegel said.
They can be broken apart, I just
wanted to give you a bottom line
there.
Although town council would
still need to get quotes as per public finance laws, if it chooses to
complete the renovations, the estimate was intended to give council general figures and details on
pricing to help guide its decision.
Concluding the presentation,
the members of the Appearance
Committee proposed that its suggestions be added to the budget
and that work start as soon as
possible, hopefully beginning
with a cleanup and planting in
the spring.

Chamber Christmas
concert is Dec. 11
West Jersey Chamber Music Society
performs at First Presbyterian Church
Always the most popular concert in the West Jersey Chamber
Music Societys calendar is the
annual Christmas concert in
which the audience participates.
The West Jersey Chamber Choir,
under the direction of Joel Krott,
will lead the community in celebrating peace and good will for
everyone with traditional carols.
This years concert on Sunday,
Dec. 11 celebrates Christmas in
the traditional English way, with
Christmas carols and remembering the true spirit of the season
the birth of Jesus Christ two millenia ago and todays love of family, friends and communities. The
setting of celebratory song has attracted some of Englands finest
composers. The program includes Gustav Holst (famous for
The Planets), David Willcocks,
John Ireland and Alan Bullard.
The Chamber Choir will perform other works by Archer,
Bainton, Rutter and Stainer be-

fore inviting the audience to join

in singing traditional carols.
For 37 years, the West Jersey
Chamber Music Societys symphony and choir have been bringing high-quality, professional
classical music to audiences in
southern New Jersey. It aims to
nurture an audience of music
lovers and enhance the quality of
life through the inspiring power
of music.
The concert takes place at 7:30
p.m. Sunday Dec. 11 in the sanctuary in the First Presbyterian
Church. Tickets can be bought

think everyone can identify with
Scrooge a little bit because we all
have a bit in us that could be
tweaked or touched in some way
to bring out the goodness in us.
This will be the Moorestown
Theater Companys 123rd production, and while it tries not to do
repeat shows too often, 90 shows
have passed since the last performance of A Christmas Carol,
The Musical. Although the last
time this musical was performed
under the direction of Morgan
was in December 2009 with an allchildrens cast, there are a few

performers from the previous

cast who will also get to be in the
upcoming performance. For example, Connell Devery, who
played Scrooge in the 2009 performance, will be playing the
Ghost of Jacob Marley in this
years production.
Since I performed in the last
show when I was 16 years old, I really fell in love with the show,
story and characters, the 24year-old Devery said. Being able
to perform it again with the adult
cast is really nice because its now
a bigger show, and its fun to be
reunited with previous cast members.
While a few of the same cast
members will be in this production, a key difference between
this performance and the last is
the musical is now being performed at William Allen Middle
School on the stage, rather than
at the Upper Elementary School
in its cafetorium. Morgan said
this will make a huge difference,
seeing as this is a better designed

theater with more comfortable

seating. Additionally, organizing
an all-ages performance during
the holiday season is not something the company usually does,
seeing as schedules are often extremely busy during this time of
the year.
Its always a little more challenging when we do an all-ages
show, as we have to coordinate rehearsal times for children along
with adults, Morgan said. Its
not so bad when we do this in the
summer with our Main Stage allages show because the kids are
not in school and can stay up later
at night. But the audience will get
to enjoy all of the fruits of our
labor this holiday season as we
bring this great musical to life onstage!

Carol, The Musical, visit

actions, many of the contaminated water fountains were taken out

of service or posted with a sign
that reads, do not drink, safe for
handwashing only. Longer-term
remedies will include water flushing, fixtures and/or valve replacements, pipe removal and/or simple cleaning.
The results came back that a
small amount of our fixtures tested positive, but the majority of
our fixtures and their access
points for drinking water and
cooking water tested clean and
without the lead levels, McCartney said. If anybody has questions, they should give us a call.

Theres also a lot of information

in the memorandum about what
things mean and where people
can get more information.
The NJDEP has offered technical guidance to Moorestown
Township Public Schools in developing a plumbing profile for
each building.
These profiles helped identify
and test all drinking water and
food preparation outlets separately.
Mandatory regulations regarding lead contamination in school
drinking water were set in place
by the state Board of Education
in July. As ordered by Gov.
Christie, the testing of faucets
and fountains within the states
schools were to abide by new
rules and precise measures, in addition to the general municipal
water testing to be done monthly

and related to incoming water the

school uses for drinking and
cooking.
Although the first lead sample
testing was to be done within one
year of the date the regulations
passed, sequential testings are
only required to be completed at
least once every six years.
On the final page of McCartneys memorandum, which can
be found on the MTPS website, it
explains that, while high levels of
lead in drinking water can cause
health problems, it is rarely the
sole cause of lead poisoning. Yet,
the Environmental Protection
Agency estimates that drinking
water can make up 20 percent
of a persons total exposure to
lead.
For more information on lead
exposure, visit www.epa.gov/
