What is the greatest hindrance to those

who want to be successful in business or even
just in life? There are plenty of excuses that
people can find when things dont go right.
The business world is full of failed endeavors
and startup companies that couldnt find the
right formula to become a success. One of the
biggest obstacles people face in any kind of
new endeavor or initiative is fear. Overcoming
fear can be extremely difficult. For some,
getting over the initial fear of starting
something prevents them from taking the first
step. For others, the fear of failure can prevent
them from taking the necessary risk to become
successful. Whatever the case, fear has a way
of stopping many would-be success stories in
their tracks.

whatever it is that is holding him or her back?

Finding the answers to these questions is
important, otherwise fear will win and youre
dreams will die. In a recent interview with Y
Combinator, Tesla founder Elon Musk
discussed the topic of fear and what role it has
played in his life, as well as how to overcome
it. Elon has accomplished a lot of things in his
lifetime and he is currently working on several
other amazing and groundbreaking initiatives.
His lists of success might lead many to believe
that he is fearless, especially given the fact that
some of the things hes involved in might still
seem impossible. So while many people likely
believe that Elon has very little fear, given his
track record, the fact is, he is not immune to
fear.

actually feels fear just as much as anyone else.

It's not as though I just have the absence of
fear. I feel it quite strongly. There are just
times when something is important enough
that you believe in it enough that you do it in
spite of fear. He even took it a step further
saying that not feeling fear would be
abnormal. It's like, people shouldn't think,
well, I feel fear about this and therefore I
shouldn't do it. It's normal to feel fear. Like,
you'd have to have something mentally wrong
with you if you don't feel fear.

2017 California and Federal Employment Poster

Order your poster now and stay in compliance with the law

Today more than ever, California businesses face increasing regulations in order to comply
with labor laws. Whether you have one employee or 1,000, California businesses are required to
post employment notices in a central location. Failure to display all required State and Federal
posters can lead to fines well over $10,000.
January is the legal deadline for posting all employment notices for 2017. Getting in
compliance is easy and inexpensive: through our partnership with the California Chamber of
Commerce, we are able to provide you with a single poster that combines all the required
employment notices.
The 2017 California and Federal Employment Poster includes ALL required employer notices
on one poster along with a checklist to ensure poster is displayed according to the law. The posters
are available in English or Spanish. Member price is $34 (non-laminated); $60 (laminated). Non-members $50 (non-laminated);
$90 (laminated).
To order, call (510) 795-2244 or visit www.fremontbusiness.com.

The Change of Doing Business:

Cloud Services and Collaboration Tools

By Emmanuel Guerrier
EG IT Consulting

I have been in the IT field for over 20

years. I started as an enthusiast then as a
professional. There have been many changes.
We no longer believe bigger is better. Small
devices are now computing applications that
needed a desktop to run. People are busy and
need to work at any location using their
laptops, phones and tablets in combination
with cloud services and collaboration tools. A
team of professionals can now work together
on complex projects.
Lets first look at the definition or the idea
of cloud computing. In the simplest term, it is
the way we now store data, access data, and
programs (applications) over the internet. The
services are offered over the internet and you
decide how it is delivered to you (compute
power, database storage, applications, and
more).
The way we compute and process
information is changing very quickly. Lets
take a company like Adobe. You now pay a
monthly premium to use their applications.
You can always cancel your subscription when
you no longer have a need for it (pay as you
go). A developer can now use a virtual server
hosting company such as Amazon Web
Services to create a server for development
purpose.

internet and reside remotely instead on your
local drive. As long as you have access to the
internet you can open the document. Therefore
you are running a program, storing and
accessing the data that was created from the
program over the internet and not using your
local hard drive. Most of us have heard of

The cloud services and collaboration

Lighthouse Worldwide Chairman & CEO
Dr. Tae Yun Kim has been selected to be the

As Ambassador to the Nations, Dr. Kim

of these films and filmmakers. Over the years,
the Academy Awards and the Golden Globe

Asia have already been submitted to the
Academy Awards and the Golden Globes
including Age of Shadows from South Korea
and 3000 Nights from Jordan.

something that can be helpful is fatalism, to
some degree. If you just accept the
probabilities, then that diminishes fear. He

sometimes find its only value when it comes to

Marketing On A Budget With The Fremont Chamber

By KK Kaneshiro

Director of Member Services

Lets just be clear, marketing is key to

your business success. If you have a large
bank account, your marketing options are
limitless. But for most businesses, that is
simply not the case and marketing on a budget
can be quite a task. The key to designing a
marketing plan on a budget is to keep it simple
and use a two prong approach.
First, develop and incorporate paid
advertising into your plan. Fortunately, as a
Chamber member, you are privy to many costeffective advertising opportunities. You may
purchase ad space in the quarterly hard copy
newsletter Fremont Business Review or the
weekly Fremont Business Brief e-newsletter.
There are additional advertising opportunities
on the Fremont Festival of the Arts website,
the Burger & Brew Fest website, Fremont
Street Eats website, or the Chambers website.
Other opportunities include the Chamber
office display case and the Chamber (hard
copy) Directory. In all of these advertising
opportunities, there is a variety of ad sizes and
frequency options from which to choose. For
example, if you run a special discount in the
spring, you may purchase a side bar ad on the
Q4 2016

Chambers website to run four weeks for only

$250. On average, the Chamber web site
enjoys well over 30,000 visits per month
which is less than a penny per potential
customer. Now thats cost effective!
And if you prefer to use more traditional
advertising methods, you may also purchase
the Fremont Chambers database for sending
mailers or emails. Or, leave the work to us and
submit 1,800 identical flyers and participate in
the Chambers quarterly direct mail
ChamberPak program. Deliver your 1,800
identical flyers along with payment the
Chamber does the rest.
Second, participate in everything that
doesnt cost money. While you may argue that
these activities cost time and time is money,
there is no better time investment than getting
out and meeting your potential customers. You
will learn a great deal about your customers
needs while making important contacts. Here
are just a few examples of no cost
opportunities to implement in your marketing
plan.
Attend monthly mixers and ribbon
cuttings when they arise. There is no cost to
attend either of these events and both are
networking events. Make it a rule to introduce
yourself to the hosts as they are the decision
makers of that business. Incidentally, on

average 78% of the attendees at these events

are also the decision makers for their
businesses. Mixers and ribbon cuttings are
face to face opportunities for you to meet
business owners directly.
With an estimated readership of 7,500, the
Fremont Business Review offers excellent
opportunities to demonstrate your expertise to
potential clients. There are three different ways
to employ this opportunity, first, you may
submit a 100 word article for the Member
News section to announce an event, or the
launch of a new service/product, introduce a
new employee or announce an award your
business has received. Second, you may
submit a 500 word or less article focusing on
the theme of the newsletter. And, third, you
may participate as the Guest Editor. As Guest
Editor, you submit a 500 word editorial and
line up different chamber members who would
be able to give different angles to the
newsletters theme.
Give your expertise a voice by hosting a
Business Building Seminars at no cost. You
design and deliver a seminar with a topic
specific to your expertise. Imparting
knowledge or a solution is one of the best
ways to develop a relationship with others.
Members may pre-book a timeslot to use the

Chamber conference room on the first

Thursday of each month. The frequency of
hosting these seminars is up to you, host one
or develop a series.
Connection Clubs are always looking for
knowledgeable speakers for their meetings.
Schedule yourself as a speaker at one or at all
of the Fremont Chamber Connection Clubs.
There is no cost to speak and you will have 30
minutes to engage the audience and share
valuable information about you and your
company.
An often overlooked opportunity is
posting to the Fremont Chambers website.
Haven an event coming up? Looking for a new
employee? Want to offer a cost-savings
coupon to your customers? All these
opportunities are available on the Chamber
website. There is no limit to the posts you can
make and again, there is no cost to you, the
member! The Fremont Chambers website
receives well over 30,000 visits each month,
and that number quadruples during the
summer event months.
With all these low or no cost marketing
opportunities, there is no reason to break the
bank to reach your customer. Ensure your
success and get started today. Well help you
find the right opportunities for you, just give
us a call.
