Catalog description:
Practice in the skills, research, and documentation needed for effective
academic writing. Analysis of a variety of academic and non-academic texts,
rhetorical structures, critical thinking, and audience will be included. A library
research component will be included. Some coursework incorporates
multimedia

Satisfactory scores on the ACT or Compass, or successful completion of ENGL

Attendance and make-up policy:
Attendance is required. Roll will be taken regularly; if a student is more than five minutes late
for class, he/she will earn an absence. Excused absences will only be considered in the even of
school-related activities and significant circumstances beyond the student's control. Students
will not be allowed to take the proficiency assessment unless they maintain good attendance.
Students are responsible for any homework due on a missed day. Assignments not submitted by
the due date will be subject to late penalties. Students are also responsible for material discussed
and assignments given on days for which they are absent. If a student misses more than 5 classes
they should not expect to pass the course.

Students are responsible for learning the content of any course of study in

University Policy Regarding the Use of Tablets in the


Classroom:
The Tablet PC platform has been adopted across the DSU campus for all
students and faculty, and tablet usage has been integrated into all DSU
classes to enhance the learning environment. Tablet usage for course-related
activities, note taking, and research is allowed and encouraged by DSU
instructors. However, inappropriate and distracting use will not be tolerated
in the classroom. Instructors set policy for individual classes and are
responsible for informing students of class-specific expectations relative to
Tablet PC usage. Failure to follow the instructors guidelines will hinder
academic performance and may lead to disciplinary actions. Continued abuse
may lead to increased tablet restrictions for the entire class.

Because tablet technology is an integral part of this course, it is the students


responsibility to ensure that his/her Tablet PC is operational prior to the
beginning of each class period.

Assessments:
Students will receive grades on daily assignments, Tests, and writing assignments. These grades
will also serve as the indicator of whether or not a student is meeting minimum requirements for
mid-term grades.

D=65-69
F=64 and below
