ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I would like to express my
appreciation to all staff members
of Joslice Cool Service for their
full support and assistance during
the attachment. Particularly to Mr.
Philip Yaw Takyi, CEO of Joslice
Cool Service and also my
supervisor during my attachment.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
The industrial attachment program fulfills part of the requirement in
pursuing the HND Mechanical Engineering (Production) in Kumasi
Polytechnic. The second semester of the academic year, practical
program will not be completed without the industrial attachment. The
attachment period is usually a maximum of eight (8) weeks, during
which the students are expected to acquire additional practical
experience to supplement to their course of study in the polytechnic.
Students are exposed to real world of work and its challenges which will
prepare them towards their future careers.
It also exposes the students to working methods not taught in the
polytechnic and to provide access to products equipment not normally
available in the polytechnic. It is said to be a supervised program since
lecturers from the faculty visit the students during this period and at the
end of the programmed to ascertain the success of the Program and the
amount of seriousness students attached to it.
This report serves to summarize the activities and experience gained
with Joslice Cool Service.
THE ORGANISATION JOSLICE COOL SERVICE
Joslice Cool Service was established in 2008 at
kokomelmel-Accra behind ATTC, they are specialist in air
condition and refrigeration work.
MISSION
To provide fast and reliable air condition installation and
servicing work for businesses, institutions and home
users.
The indoor unit contains the evaporator and it is usually located in the attic
or a closet. The indoor unit also typically includes a furnace. The indoor and
the outdoor units are connected by a refrigerant line.
Install the indoor unit; this is where you select an unobstructed location
on your interior wall to mount the indoor air conditioning unit. Avoid heat
source and direct sunlight, avoid location where gas may leak, the indoor
unit requires at least 15cm of open space surrounding its top and sides. The
unit should also be mounted at least 7 feet (2.13m) above the ground. The
indoor unit contains the evaporator and is usually located in the attic or a
closet. The indoor and the outdoor units are connected by a refrigerant line.
Secure the mounting plate to the interior wall; is where you hold the
mounting plate against the wall where you want to install the indoor unit.
Use a level to make sure that the plate is both horizontally level, drill holes
into the wall at appropriate spots to affix the plate to the wall, insert plastic
anchors into the holes and secure the plate to the wall with tapping screws.
Create a hole in the wall to fit the piping; find the best spot for the hole
to the exterior based on the opening in the mounting bracket. You should
also consider the length of the pipe and the distance it needs to travel to
reach the outside unit, drill a hole that is 7.5cm in diameter though the wall.
The hole should slope downward toward the exterior to ensure adequate
drainage and insert flexible flange into the hole.
Check the electrical connection; now here lift the units front panel and
remove the cover, be sure the cable wires are connected to the screw
terminals. Also, make sure that they match the diagram that comes with the
unit.
Connect the pipes; now run the piping from the indoor unit toward the hole
drilled through the wall. Minimize bending to ensure that the unit performs
well. Cut a length of PVC PIPE 1/4 (6 millimeters) shorter than the length
between your interior and exterior wall surface. Place the pipe cap on the
interior end of the PVC pipe. Insert the pipe into the hole in the wall. Blind
the
copper pipes, the power cable and the drain pipe together with electrical
tape. Place the drain pipe on the bottom to ensure a free flow of water.
Secure the pipe to the indoor unit. Use 2 wrenches, working in opposite
direction, to tighten the connection.
Secure the indoor unit to the mounting plate by pressing the unit against the
mounting plate.
INSTALL THE OUTDOOR CONDENSER
Choose the best place to install the outdoor unit; the outdoor units
location needs to be away from any heavily trafficked, dusty or hot areas.
The outdoor unit needs 12 of space surrounding its perimeter to ensure
proper functioning.
Lay the concrete pad on the ground and make sure that it lever; the
pad should be high enough so that the condenser will sit above the level of
water flood. Set the outdoor condenser on top of the pad. Use rubber
cushioning under the units feet to minimize vibration. Make that no antenna
of a radio or television is within 10 feet (3 meter) of the outdoor condenser.
Connect the electrical wire; Remove the cover. Refer to the units wiring
diagram and make sure the cable wire are connected as the diagram
suggests. Following the manufacturers instruction for wiring is crucial.
Fasten the cable with a cable clamp and replace the cover.
Secure the pipes flare nuts to the corresponding pipe on the outdoor units.
Bleed the air and humidity from the refrigerant circuit; remove the
caps from the 2-way and 3-way valve and from the service port. Connect a
vacuum pump hose to the service port. Turn the vacuum on until it reaches
an absolute vacuum of 10mm Hg. Close the low pressure knob and then turn
off the vacuum. Test all of the valves and joints for leaks. Disconnect the
vacuum. Replace the service port and caps.
Wrap the joints of the piping with insulating covering and insulating tape.
Affix the piping to the wall with clamps.
Seal up the hole in the wall using expanding polyurethane foam.

CHAPTER 3
KEY SKILLS ACQUIRED, BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES
KEY SKILLS ACQUIRED
The indoor unit requires at least 15cm of open space surrounding its
top and sides. The unit should also be mounted at least 7 feet (2.13m)
above the ground.
Consider the length of the pipe and the distance it needs to travel to
reach the outside unit, drill a hole that is 7.5cm in diameter though the
wall. The hole should slope downward toward the exterior to ensure
adequate drainage.
Set the outdoor condenser on top of the pad. Use rubber cushioning
under the units feet to minimize vibration.
Failure to clean the filter or change it can lead to developing fungi and
bacteria that shouldnt be inhaled. To clean the filter, remove the casing that
encompasses the air-filter. Remove the filter and clean it with a cloth. You can
then clean the filter with non-abrasive soap and water.
BENEFITS
Through this attachment, I have generated good inter-personal relationship through my
interaction with my supervisors and colleagues. This has aided me to interact confidently with
people irrespective of their position. Through this attachment, I have gained new experience
about air condition and it servicing work, it has improve my knowledge about air conditions and
refrigeration works then I though before.
CHALLENGES
Lack of supplementary power when main power is shuts down. When power shuts down
activities are halted. This was a great obstacle.
CHAPTER 4
ATTACHMENT CONCLUSION
The industrial attachment which lasted for two (2) months has
come to an end. The program has greatly enhanced my
knowledge in air condition and it servicing works. Due to my
determination and under the guidance of my supervisors, it was
nevertheless difficult to grasp these two areas with a limited time
of two months. What seemed daunting initially soon became
manageable.
RECOMMENDATION
The attachment is very beneficial as it assists students to blend
academic work with that of the industry, therefore much
importance must be given to attachment.
