Introduction of NAB

NAB was established in 1999 and drives power from National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) which is
Special Law, over riding other laws relating to corruption & corrupt practices etc. NAB is an apex anticorruption organization. NABs approach to enforcement has changed over time: from the initial focus on
high-value, high-profile corruption cases; to making more use of plea bargaining; to the current threepronged approach of awareness, prevention and enforcement. The bureau is performing assigned tasks
under the legal framework of NAO 1999, operational methodology, SOPs and other instructions issued by
NAB HQ The National Accountability Bureau aims to be a credible, effective, efficient and dynamic anticorruption organization creating an enabling environment for a corruption-free society. Bureau is working
to provide for affective measures for detection, investigation, prosecution and speedy disposal of cases of
corruption and corrupt practices.

MISSION
The National Accountability Bureaus mission is to work to eliminate corruption through a
comprehensive approach encompassing awareness, prevention and enforcement. The National
Accountability Bureaus core values in completion of its mission include Integrity, Honor, Dedication,
Dependability, Judgment, Tact, Courage, Proactive Approach and Justice.
OBJECTIVES
To provide for affective measures for detection, investigation, prosecution and speedy disposal of
cases of corruption and corrupt practices.
To recover outstanding amounts from those who have committed default to Bank, Financial
Institutions and Govt. / other agencies.
To recover State money and other assets from those who have misappropriated such money
through corruption and misuse of authority
To educate the society about the causes and affects of corruption
To implement transparent policies and procedures in public sector organizations which are prone
to corruption and corrupt practices;
Increase international awareness that our Nation is readily combating corruption and it seeks/
gives mutual legal assistance concerning corruption and to deal with corrupt persons.

Awareness and Prevention


Awareness is conducted under provisions of section 33 C of NAO 1999. NAB is mandated to target
different segments of society to aware them about the menace of corruption. Spectrum of awareness and
prevention activities has enormously broadened in very efficient and effective manner. Awareness Team
of NAB aims at developing a society that is able to demonstrate and exhibit high social norms and refined
ethical values for the propagation of character, progress & welfare of the entire community and nation. If
the youth and the noble persons of the society stand against corruption, that will derive a force which
would work gradually to eliminate the culprits from all strata of society. While Prevention is conducted
under provisions of section 33 B & C of NAO 1999. Public Sector Organizations and other stakeholders
are assisted to incorporate micro and macro level preventive measures against corruption through
systemic improvements.
Some of actions taken under the Awareness Plan are:
Formulation of more than 10000 Character Building Societies (CBS) in Educational
Institutions. CBS in synergy with NAB is to be a credible, effective, efficient, dynamic and
efficacious financial anti-corruption forum meant for enabling of an environment for a
corruption free Pakistan.
Formulation of Character Building Societies at Union Council, Tehsil and District levels

Advertisements / Publication of fraud Alerts in Newspapers for guidance of general public
Declamation contests, Painting & Poster / Essay writing / Poetry / Drama Competitions
among students
FM Radio Programs / Talk Shows / TV Dramas

Seminars and workshops for capacity building of students and Government Servants
Mobilization of Mobile Awareness Unit
Building the Morale of Social Action Groups fighting Corruption & Creating Hatred & Social
