Task 7 Traffic Calming

One housing estate is experiencing high rate of road accident. In addition, the road network in
the estate is used as an alternative route to an adjacent highway. You are required to give a short
proposal to overcome both problems. Explain your proposal with appropriate sketches
Introduction
Traffic calming is a system of design and management strategies that aim to balance traffic on
streets with other uses. It is founded on the idea that streets should help create and preserve a
sense of place that their purpose is for people to walk, stroll, look, gaze, meet, play, shop and
even work alongside cars but not dominated by them. The tools of traffic calming take a different
approach from treating the street only as a conduit for vehicles passing through at the greatest
possible speed. They include techniques designed to lessen the impact of motor vehicle traffic by
slowing it down, or literally calming it. This helps build human-scale places and an
environment friendly to people on foot.
Problem
1. Street with Cut Through Traffic (non-local land use trips) problem.
Cut through traffic or thru traffic is using local streets in preference of arterial or
collector streets in order to take shortcuts, avoided traffic jam at busy streets, traffic
lights, congested intersections or streets with implemented traffic calming measures.
Generally cut through traffic is called as non-lan use traffic or non-local traffic. Cut
through traffic threatens the safety of vulnerable road-users in residential streets and
neighborhoods also they have inverse environmental impacts such as air and noise
pollution. Home owners and residents in local streets are major complainant of through
traffic and regard it as a disruptive issue to their peace.
It must take into account than Through Traffic is a safety problem in Local Streets and in
Collector Streets due to their function, Through Traffic is not considered as a safety issue.

Solution
It has been proven that full closure as a volume control measure can exclude cut through traffic
volume from residential streets but other criteria such as emergency access and vehicle turning
must be considered. Signing can be implemented but their effectiveness is not measured.
Deflection measures such speed humps and chicanes can make a slow point in meddle of streets
and discourage drivers to use residential streets

2. Safety Problems for Area with High Residential Density
Solutions for local streets with high residential density
Reducing speed limit in street with high density can help drivers to pay more attention to their
environment. Pedestrian signs must be installed in order to inform drivers about the presence of
pedestrians. Constructing sidewalks and also implementing crosswalks are important
infrastructure to accommodate residents and improve the safety of pedestrians. Furthermore
sidewalk widening and streets caping strategies can encourage residents to use non-motorized
transportation rather than private vehicles and discourage drivers from speeding. Moreover home

zone scheme, which is considered as a psychological strategy can be implemented to provide a

calm place for residents and persuade drivers to reduce their speed. Mentioned strategies for
improving the safety of streets with high residential density are provided as follows:
