A Traditional Christmas Eve

Twas the night before

Christmas, and all through
the community, people were
caroling, touring the Christmas lights, hitting Mass early, getting a visit from Santa
and indulging in food, and
plenty of it. These are just a
few of the ways in which locals spend their Christmas
Eve. We were a little curious
about how different families
celebrate the night before
Christmas, so we learned
about various traditions
throughout the local area.
This year, many in the
neighborhood will be spending Christmas Eve celebrating a different holiday. The
first night of Hanukkah falls
on December 24 this year.
Those of the Jewish faith will

be spending this Christmas
Eve lighting the first candle
on their menorahs as they
kick off the Festival of Lights,
exchanging gifts and indulging in potato latkes and other goodies.
Many families in Broad
Channel will be expecting a
special visit from Santa and
hell be arriving by fire truck.
For more than 20 years, the
Broad Channel Volunteer
Fire Department has helped
bring Santa around various
houses. From about 6 p.m.
to 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve,
the volunteers of the firehouse make their rounds to
homes that pre-registered
for a visit from old St. Nick in
a big operation. Counting on
no emergencies on Christ-
mas Eve, Captain Jill Spinelli

will be dispatching her volunteers with Santa in tow.
With as many as 50 homes
that schedule a visit, Santa
will be very busy, so he has
a little help. There will be
two to three fire trucks with
Santas stopping at homes in
Broad Channel and Rockaway and meeting with kids
to give them presents from
the family, and take photos
of course. Spinelli will be
making sure the volunteers
are on schedule, but she has
gone along for visits in past
years. Its a lot of fun. The
kids love it, she said. But its
not just fun for the kids. As
an adult, its always great to
see kids react to Santa. Its really funny to watch year after
year because you get a range
of reactions from young kids

who are excited to the older
kids who are jaded and can
say I cant believe youre
still making me do this, but
its great. It makes the kids
happy. Everyone loves Santa. There may still be some
time to schedule a visit from

Whats Open on Christmas?

If you were planning on pizza this Christmas, your only

option is Papa John's. Dont
rely on your regular Chinese
takeout spot to be open. And
for those who plan on drinking this Christmas, make sure
to stock up on provisions by
Christmas Eve. Yet not everyone looking for somewhere
to go on Christmas Day will
be left out in the cold. Some
local bars, eateries and stores
will be open for your needs
on December 25.
If you cant go without
your regular bagel and coffee on Christmas Day, youre
in luck. Many breakfast
spots will be open. Youre
out of luck at Last Stop, but
Dunkin Donuts has got you
covered. So does Beach Bagel on Beach 129th. Theyll
be open from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Channel Drive and Beach
114th will also be open reg-
ular hours. Newcomer Rockaway Bites Deli on Beach

104th and Rockaway Beach
Boulevard will be open from
6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those in
Broad Channel can also grab

Channel Market from 6 a.m.
until 1 p.m. or Bagel Barista
II until noon.
If youre cooking and need
some last-minute items, skip
Stop & Shop. Both locations
will be closed Christmas day.
However Keyfood on Beach
88th will be open until 5 p.m.
and C-Town on Cornaga Avenue in Far Rockaway will
also be open. You can also
grab some essentials at Rite
Aid or Duane Reade as both
are open. Belle Harbor Foods
on Beach 129th is open and
if you need some last-minute baked goods to bring for
dessert, nearby Ciros Pastry Shop will be open until 5
p.m. on Christmas Day.

takeout on Christmas, even
for Chinese restaurants. East

noon to 6 p.m. You wont be
able to grab a quick bite at
McDonalds but Papa Johns
on Beach 49th can fulfill
your fast food cravings, and
theyre the only spot you can
get pizza. If youre looking
for a sandwich, Bon Appetit
on Beach 129th can help you

from 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
And no matter what time of
day, theres always Pickles &
Pies.
If you know youre going to
need a drink to get through
the holiday, hit the liquor
store on Christmas Eve. None
will be open on Christmas
Day. However some of your
local watering holes will be.
Healys Pub will be open early, starting at 11 a.m. Rockaway Brewing Company on
Beach 72nd will be slinging
brewskis from noon until
10 p.m. Ruffle Bar in Broad
Channel will also be open.
Community House opens
Christmas evening. We also
tried reaching Rogers, Kerry Hills and Brendans Bar
and didnt get a response
by press time, but theres a
good chance theyll be open
at some point.

RISE: Inside Firehouse 59

Whats inside that firehouse at

Beach 59th Street on Rockaway
Beach Boulevard? You wouldnt
be the first to ask.
Is there a gym in there, asked
one boy who thought he saw
Jeanne DuPont carrying in some
kind of exercise weights?
DuPont, Executive Director of
the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, answered, No, no. Its not
a gym.
Oh, the boy said looking a little disappointed, but still curious.
The historic structure was built
in the 1920s after a massive fire in
Arverne left 10,000 people homeless. It was a busy firehouse in the
decades that followed. In 2004
FDNY companies there moved
to newly built quarters several
blocks away and the building was
decommissioned by the FDNY.
Since then, many Rockaway
residents have grown used to
passing the abandoned Engine

In 2009 the city put out a call

to non-profit groups to submit
proposals for several empty firehouses across the city. RWA won
the right to buy the building,
warts and all, for $1.
Since then the group has put
a massive amount of work into
cleaning out, redesigning, renovating and transforming it into
RISE- the Rockaway Institute for
Sustainable Environment. The

The second floor now has a
series of office and work spaces.
A large room doubles as a conference room and class space.

emerging artists and scientists
to lead community-led projects,
lectures and classes for youth
and local residents.
Many of the spaces inside RISE
have been designed to serve multiple purposes. A raised portion
of the first floor, which reaches
to the rear of the building, sports
a kitchen and serving area and
other amenities. Large interior
windows face onto a wide, dark
wood floored spacious inner gallery. Like the rest of the building
it is bare of permanent fixtures.

enough to support conferences,
classes, workshops or hands on
projects for kids and teens.

pressed into duty on a chilly night
last Sunday as a fire tore through
abandoned commercial units on
Beach Channel Drive and Beach
53rd Street. No injuries were reported and an investigation into
its cause is underway.

Wednesday, December 14, 2016
at approximately 2:00 p.m., there
were gun shots fired towards the
boardwalk at Beach 98 Street and
Shore Front Parkway. Suspect
did get into unknown black SUV
with tinted windows and fled the
scene. Suspect is described as a
Male Black/Hispanic, approx. 18
years of age, approx. 6 feet tall
and was wearing a purple and
black hooded sweatshirt. There
were two 9mm shell casings recovered at the scene. No injuries

or property damage reported.
This incident is currently being
investigated by the 100 Precinct
Detective Squad. Anyone with

Ever find a delightful theater
that is small and intimate and
has all the things you wished
theater could be? We are lucky
to have the Rockaway Theatre
Company right here at Fort
Tilden. They work hard, are
very good at their craft and
bring real theater to us here
on the peninsula. Patronage
is the key to keeping theater
alive here in Rockaway, and
RTC has a loyal following. And
the 2017 performance schedule is awesome check it out
online at rockawaytheatrecompany.org.
If you get off our sandy,
mermaid filled promontory and head into Manhattan
there are a couple of places
worth checking out, especially during the holidays.
For instance the Irish Repertory Theater on West 22nd
Street just moved into new
digs this year and the theater is beautiful and charming.
They have some great Irish
plays and some that can get
you into the mood for the
holidays. Currently Finians
Rainbow is playing and so is
Joyces The Dead. Only the
Irish celebrate the holidays
by celebrating the dead! Well
worth a visit.
If you really want to get in
the mood for the holidays
check out the Players Theatre on MacDougal Street,
they are presenting Dickens
A Christmas Carol until December 30, and it is lots of
fun. It is also very kid friendly and only about 70 minutes
long. They do a great job of
recreating the atmosphere
of old London and that miser Scrooge. There is no re-
semblance to the publisher,

despite what some may say.
If you want something to eat
before or after, try Montes
right down the block. Sure
to put you in the mood for
Christmas.
Not every theater has a loyal following like ours here in
Rockaway. The 13th Street
Theater on West 13th Street
presents Israel Horowitzs
Line on Monday nights. This
is actually the oldest running
play in all of New York. I recently took my son to see the
play and we were joined by a
whopping four other people
in the 60-seat theater. But the
cast was terrific; they played
like it was a full house.
The mermaid and I were
lucky enough to experience
the Ridiculous Theater Company off of 7th Avenue and
West 4th Street many years
ago. Managed by the now deceased Charles Ludlam and
the ever-mad Everett Quinton, this theater specialized
in one and two person shows
that played multiple melodramatic characters that always had us laughing. Sadly
they lost their lease and their
founder, but occasionally Mr.
Quinton produces The Mystery of Irma Vep. I have seen
this play many times and always love it. The last production I saw was at the Lucille
Lortel Theater on Christopher Street.
So as the Christmas season engulfs us fully, try to
get out and see a play. Nothing speaks to the heart like a
voice from the stage! Merry

Make Rockaway Resiliency Great Again!

Playing Nicely Staying
Focused! Is that possible between different public agencies to work together for the
good of the citizens and communities they serve? A case
in point, the NYC Parks and
Recreation Department recently conducted a public
meeting to discuss how FEMA
money, in excess of 120 to
200 million dollars, could be
spent. These dollars must be
primarily spent on Rockaway
Resiliency Measures.
Now, the US Army Corps of
Engineers has held a number
of past meetings to discuss
Rockaway Peninsula Resiliency issues. They compiled
feedback from many residents and community officials from the Rockaways.
They are in the process of
analyzing the information.
The USACE will need to request the Federal Government for the billions of dollars, yes thats billions with
a B, to initiate their comprehensive plan. This process

will take years to complete
and no guarantee that they
will receive the necessary
funding. In the past USACE
plans have been developed
but never executed.
Now lets get back to the
Parks Department plan presented to the community. You can check out their
power point presentation at
www.nyc.gov/parks/input.
Go down the page to Share
Your Input Online and click
on the icon. You will see that
their Power Point indicates
nine (9) proposed projects
for the Rockaway community.
On the Parks website please
give your opinion and/or
comments as to what resiliency steps we need for our
community. Of those projects, four or five are highly
questionable as to how they
fully meet the category of an
effective resiliency project.
They fall more into the category of attractive enhance-
ments and activities.

If a cost analysis were made
using FEMA data to consider where the most damage
occurred along the shoreline from Beach 9th Street
to Beach 149th Street, Rockaway Park, Belle Harbor and
Neponsit clearly stands out.
The FEMA dollars given to
the Parks Department was
targeted for the stretch of
beach from Beach 9th Street
to Beach 149th Street. A
large portion of that shorefront from Beach 9th Street
to 126th Street has received a
magnificent boardwalk/barrier
providing protection from storm
surges. Yet, the section of beach
from 126th Street to Beach 149th
received a questionable designed baffle wall and marginal/
temporary sand berm.
What we are proposing, is for
FEMA, USACE and NYC-DP&R
to collaborate and coordinate
a resiliency project for Beach
126th Street to Beach 149th
street. The communities must
have rock jetties and the pro-
posed reinforced berm ASAP.

The USACE already has preliminary resiliency plans. Parks has
the FEMA money for resiliency.
USACE needs to say yes to move
forward on executing the resiliency work required. FEMA
needs to approve the transfer of
approximately 30 to 40 million
dollars from Parks to USACE
and Parks needs to agree with
the transfer.
These government entities
that are dedicated to providing public service must pull
together and collaborate/coordinate their efforts. If so,
the end result would make
Rockaways Resiliency Great
Again!

a tradition that spans several generations and its a huge
family affair. The Knotts have
been celebrating Christmas on
Christmas Eve for many years
at my grandmothers house
on Beach 91st, Kelli Knott
Leary explains. My father is
one of seven, and seven inlaws as well. Then there are
20 grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren and every
year we meet at grandmas
house. First we eat and then
Santa himself makes an appearance.
And then they spread Christmas cheer around the block.
Some of the little ones get
dressed as mini Santas, elves
or reindeer and we all get together and go caroling up and
down the bay block of 91st.
Many residents await out arrival, Leary said. Among those
who anticipate a visit are the
Mancini family. Every year
we go to my fathers house on
91st and make cookies with the
kids and wait to see the carolers. It is the highlight of the

season, Zach Mancini said.
Some of the Knotts stay behind to organize gifts and
make hot chocolate, so when
their caroling family returns,
everyone can warm up and
they spend the rest of the night
opening gifts. Its such a great
evening that goes way back to
when my dad was little. I can
remember being little and
anxiously awaiting Christmas
Eve at Nannys, Leary said.
Unfortunately, the Knotts may
forego the tradition this year.
Currently, my grandmother is
not well and is staying with my
aunt on Long Island. We are
hoping she feels well enough
that we can get her home for
the day and continue the tradition, Leary said. Please
keep her in your prayers.
Some traditions are cultural. The Scalas participate in
the Italian tradition of having a seafood feast including
crab, calamari, shrimp, lobster and more. Ruth Krauthamer also gets together
with her Italian friends to
enjoy some fish. Some say
seven fishes, some say 12, ei-
ther way its a lot of fish dishes, she said.

tradition of Christmas Eve
Dinner or Wigilia. Its the
most important celebration
of the year. We always set
an extra place at the table
for an unexpected guests.
Dinner starts when the first
star appears in the sky. All
family members and guests
start with a broken wafer
(oplatek) and wish each other good health and prosperity, Chojnacki said. Then
they feast on 12 traditional
dishes including red borscht
with mushroom and onion
stuffed dumplings, potatoes, pierogis, fish, pasta and
much more, but you wont
find any meat until Christmas Day. After feasting, the
family opens presents and
heads to church for the latenight Mass.

enjoying the holiday lights
locally and in the decoration hotspots. We go to six

ents and then check out the
amazing Christmas lights,
Mags Kelly said. We go to
dinner and then go see the
lights, around Rockaway,
Canarsie and Dyker Heights,
Scott Winik said.
For the Coris, Christmas
Eve gets competitive, at least
when it comes to gifts. We do
a grab bag, with stealing! Each
person picks a number and
after a person picks a gift from
the grab bag, the next person
has the option of taking a gift
from the bag or stealing a gift
from someone who already
picked from the bag, John
Cori said.
Others keep their traditions
simple as they await a bigger
celebration on Christmas Day.
We drink mimosas and watch
A White Christmas and Minnies Christmas Eve, Casey
Gallagher said. On Christmas
Eve, we sing Happy Birthday
to baby Jesus, put out the milk
and cookies and get to bed
early so that Santa can arrive,
said Mary Beth Bertolini.

Resiliency Dollars
Santa came to the Rockaway
peninsula early this year with a
big bag full of money for Rockaway Recovery and Rockaway
Resilience! The money in Santa's bag is what is left over from
the extra 200 million dollars given to Rockaway by way of NYC to
rebuild the Rockaway boardwalk
after it was obliterated during
Superstorm Sandy.
To refresh your memories, the
City of New York asked FEMA
(Federal Office of Emergency
Management) for 280 million
dollars to rebuild the Rockaway
boardwalk and FEMA sent along
an extra 200 million to be used as
part of FEMA's '428' program.
The projects eligible in the

428 program are Raised shoreline work, Parks and Recreational Facilities, buildings,
Elevation and Structures and
Engineered and Natural structures. What is not covered in
the FEMA 428 program is New
Trees, Plantings, Lawns, Buyouts, and of course Studies.
There are some really great
projects that address resilience
and some that address recovery.
There are nine projects in
consideration on the peninsula
and these projects are the result
of years of meetings with local
civic associations and commu-
nity outreach by NYC Parks,

Rockaway Parks Conceptual
Plan and Housing Preservation
and Development's Resilient
Edgemere Initiative.
The potential projects being
considered are: Renovate Bayswater Park, Raise Shorelines
in Edgemere on Jamaica Bay,
Renovate Rockaway Community Park, create a new waterfront park at Thursby Basin
in Arverne on Jamaica Bay,
Reconstruct NYC Parks operations facility at Beach 73rd
Street, Create a new waterfront park on the bay at Beach
88th Street, Beach 94th-95th
Corridor as a Gateway to The
Rockaways, Rebuild Shore
Front Parkway Recreation
zone and new comfort stations at Beach 59th St and
Beach 116th Street.
To do all these projects the
City would have to spend between 250 and 350 million dollars. Although Parks and the
Office of Recovery and Resiliency has asked the communities on the peninsula what our
priorities are for these projects,
it has been made quite clear
The Rockaway Times

that all the projects will not be
funded 100 percent.
It's my opinion that the projects which have the greatest
component of recovery should
have the highest degree of
funding priority. The only project in consideration with a recovery and recreation component is the Shore Front Parkway
Recreation Zone, as this is the
only project being considered
that existed prior to Hurricane
Sandy and was totally wiped
away by the storm. This is not to
say that only Shore Front Parkway should receive funds. All
should receive a good amount
to get them started.

EZ-Pass And EZ Praise
Dear Editor:
I greatly appreciate that you
wrote about the (EZ-Pass) issue in your High Tide column
last week. I believe that there

are many of us who have been
overcharged for many years.
I believe that EZ pass and the
MTA are not living up to FTC
Guidelines for Full Disclosure.
Interestingly, I received a
call from State Senator Joe
Addabbo's office on Friday.
The woman from the Senator's office tried to explain to
me that there was only a discount for the Cross Bay Bridge
(free for Rockaway residents)
and there was no discount for
the Marine Parkway Bridge. In
fact she told me that she gets
charged $2.08 when she goes
over the MPB. I told her that
EZ Pass did in fact confirm to
me that Rockaway Resident
Discount is $1.36 for the Marine Parkway Bridge. She was
surprised to learn that she too
was being overcharged. She
said she will reach out to EZ
Pass. My next steps are to file
a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and to
call a complaint into Mayor
de Blasio's Friday NPR radio
show. I will keep you posted. It
is a still developing story.

ly emerged from their homes and
apartments and slowly surveyed
the devastation that surrounded
them. Almost without exception,
each neighbors face was etched
with the strain of complete disbelief and shock, eyes staring
blankly into the distance, bereft
of emotion as if the life had been
sucked out of them. Home heating fuel was everywhere, having
spilled from overturned oil tanks.
One hundred pound propane
tanks littered the street like errant
submarine torpedoes. Parts of
neighbors decks, wooden skiffs,
barbecue grills, deck furniture,
childrens bikes, sand and other
assorted flotsam and jetsam were
strewn about West 12th Road,
making it appear some evil goliath had picked up our entire
block, turned it upside down and
shook it hard!
Enter the O'Toole family of
West 12th Road. Less than two
days after Superstorm Sandy laid
waste to Broad Channel back in
2012, Gwen and Frank O'Toole,
along with their children, Haley,
Madison, "Lil" Frank and their
dog "Teddy Bear," rose to the occasion and served as an inspiration for the entire community.
This was a family who decided
there would be no sitting around
wringing their hands while praying for some government agency or charitable organization to
come to their rescue. While the
rest of us were walking around
like zombies feeling sorry for ourselves, the O'Toole's, after taking
stock of the entire miserable situation, quietly decided..."Screw
Sandy, we have small children
and Christmas is coming - our
family will be back home in time
for the holiday!"
Gwen and Frank then immediately set about the process of
demolition - ripping out water
damaged sheet rock, insulation
and wall studs, removing water
damaged appliances and furniture and sanitizing their home on
W12th Road. Within weeks, they
were already hard at work rewiring electrical systems, fixing the
plumbing and shortly thereafter,
they began the process of studding out, insulating, and sheet
rocking and taping new walls. It
was truly amazing to watch as

this family remained continually
busy striving to bring new life into
a dead home while the rest of us
were still overwhelmed trying to
empty our houses of water damaged debris!
During all the post Sandy madness Gwen and Frank always
found time to go out of their way
to visit with their neighbors on
West 12th Road who remained
in their houses after the storm, to
see if anyone needed anything.
Their shared good humor, and
faces always lit with bright smiles,
were always a welcome sight
for those of us still living on the
block amidst the rubble. As days
turned into weeks, like many of
us, the O'Tooles would often trek
up to the American Legion for a
hot meal and maybe a side trip to
the VFW for sanitation supplies
but never losing sight of their self
imposed Christmas deadline,
they would immediately return
to continue work on their home
on W12th Road as there was still
much to be done before December 25th.
If, like myself, you were lucky
enough to be on West 12th Road
on Christmas Eve, 2012, you
would have been witness to a
true "Broad Channel Christmas
Miracle." Less than two months
after Sandy, the O'Toole family home was the only habitable
residence on the street. Newly furnished, brightly lit with a
big Christmas tree with all the
trimmings visible through the
window, if you listened closely
enough, you could hear the soft
sounds of holiday music coming
from within, providing a juxtaposition to the storm's devastation and stark silence just outside their front door. The O'Toole
family was, indeed, home for the
holidays. One neighbor who was
with me that evening remarked
"I guess we'll all get through this
thing OK!"
Although Gwen and Frank have
since moved from West 12th Road
and now reside across town on
Noel Road, those of us who were
present on West 12th Road that
wonderful Christmas Eve four
years ago will always remember
and be forever grateful to the entire O'Toole Family and the Broad
Channel Christmas Miracle of
2012!

College Alumni Camp

The problem: the day-today pressure of daily life as a

responsible adult
The big idea: Summer camp
for college alums
Who didnt love college?
Almost no one, according to
the six people I asked. Keg
parties, fraternities, eating
pizza from under your bed for
breakfast, classes maybe four
days a week. No one cared
that you left your clothes
all over the floor and blasted Springsteen at 3 am. Your
biggest problem was having
to rise by noon on a Thursday
so youd have time to plagiarize your term paper due on
Friday evening. No job (work
study doesnt count), unlimited food at the cafeteria, and
funnel beer contests every

Saturday.
Flash forward 10-20 years
and life is about mortgages,
your idiot boss, PITA teenaged kids, the leaky roof, and
another scintillating dinner
with the in-laws. On balance,
youre thinking you should
have stayed in school a while
longerand thats where my
idea comes in: summer camp
for college alumni.
Think about it. Campuses
are virtually empty from midMay to mid-August every year.
These institutions are warehousing valuable assets like
dorms, food halls, gyms, and
classrooms for 1/3 of each
year. If schools promoted
weeklong stays to their graduates, complete with frat parties, bbqs on the quad, and
a series of modified classes

for people to attend during
the day, alum camp would
be huge! The only downside
of college (finals and term
papers) would be eliminated, and the fun stuff amplified. The schools would make
money on their underutilized
assets, promote alumni loyalty (and donations), and the
oldsters could re-live their
glory days in bliss, unencumbered by report cards and student loans. It could also be
done as a three to four day adventure, since the old bodies
may not be able to stand up to
the rigors of a full week of college-level partying. The plan
is subject to a few tweaks.
It should be limited to alums out of school for more
than 10 years, in order to en-
sure a proper perspective and

appreciation by its participants. I takes the weight of
accumulated responsibilities
and distance of time to recognize how sweet things were
when your biggest problem
was whether to venture into
the mystery meat in the cafeteria: beef medley. Groups
of similar years could coordinate their weeks. Stag and
mixed weeks could be offered. Offering masters classes during the day provides the
veneer of respectability.
And like any epic stag party
or memory shattering bender, participants may wake up
with a greater appreciation
for their boring daily existence. Then again, whats
better than a pepperoni slice
from under the bed?

The polished wood steps that
lead up to it are also built as
bleachers, serving as seating
for all kinds of events.
The most striking Firehouse 59
feature is the Great Hall that
occupies the ground floor where
fire engines once rolled out. The
large doors have been replaced
with a nearly floor to ceiling entrance faade of glass panels.
The large open space is
brightly and naturally lit and
able to hold a few hundred
people.
Since summer RWA has
been able to host cultural activities, events, and youth and
community-based programs
at RISE for the first time, Asimov said. One of these was
the Washed Ashore exhibition
showcasing original artwork
created by Rockaway schoolchildren out of trash, which
raised awareness about shoreline pollution and the importance of recycling.
RISE was also the home base
for the over seventy youths and
RWAs teen programs. About 50

students still meet there three
times a week.
During the fall (we) hosted
a series of weekend events including lectures on emergency
preparedness and a workshop
with the NYC DOT focused on
designing future streetscapes
(here).
With the NYC Department
of Health and Mental Hygiene
and the Hester Street Collaborative, they hosted two large
community meetings focused
on unmet health needs on the
east end.
RWA already has many RISE
events planned, starting with a
workshop led by the New York
Legal Assistance Group and
Center for NYC Neighborhoods
about rising flood insurance
costs and how homeowners
can lower their risk and rates.
Now that they have opened
the doors, RWA is looking forward to expanding its use. And
answering for more people that
same question: Whats inside
there?

As the year approaches its

closing, we are reminded of
all that happened in 2016
personally, in our community, in our country and in
the world. We may be disconcerted and concerned,
and maybe feel that there is
nothing we can do to make
positive
changes
come
about. I, for one, do not believe that. I believe that the
light that originates in the
heart center can make all
the difference in the world.
There is much more good
than there is evil. There are
many more good times than
bad times. There is much
more full heartedness, than
heartache.
We must be
overwhelmed by the good
and not the bad. We must
not succumb to that which
tries every cell in our bodies. Our hearts, minds and
bodies go through a lot in
our lifetimes just think
about it illnesses, grief,
imbalance yet we are still
here. Our bodies are resilient, our minds are durable,
our hearts are strong.
From that perspective,
we can imagine our feet
grounded to the earth unshakeable and a warm
bright light from within the
center of our beings. That
is what makes each of us
unique. Take time during
the passing from 2016 to
2017 to feel what it is that
makes you, you. What is your
individual gift? What is your
individual light? It could be
as simple as making someone feel good or as grand as
having the knowledge and
skill to save a life. One is
not better than the other. It
is all goodness coming from
the light within.

FODMAP FOR YOU

In a previous column I discussed
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS),
which comes in two forms IBS with
diarrhea (IBS-D), which is more
common in men, and IBS with constipation (IBS-C), more common in
women. Symptoms (gas, bloating,
cramps, and diarrhea) generally appear in young adulthood but may
be diagnosed at any age. Symptoms
can persist for decades and lead to
life-style changes in many sufferers.
As symptoms often appear after
eating, traditional dietary advice
has been to avoid large meals and
reduce intake of fat, insoluble fibers,
caffeine, spicy and gas-producing
foods, and carbonated beverages. A gluten-free diet has also been
advised as there is evidence of a relationship between IBS and celiac
disease. Today I would like to share

some relatively new dietary advice
a low FODMAP diet.
The term FODMAP was coined
by researchers at Monash University in Australia. FODMAP stands
for Fermentable Oligosaccharides,
Disaccharides, Monosaccharides,
and Polyols. In other words FODMAPs are short-chain carbohydrates. Most of these compounds
are slowly or poorly absorbed by
the gut, or not absorbed at all making the gut contents more concentrated. A number of studies have
shown that IBS symptoms are greatly improved after total elimination
of FODMAPs for about four weeks
followed by gradual re-introduction
of them into the diet. Long-term use
of a FODMAP-free diet is not recom-
mended as it can adversely affect gut

bacteria. Also, those with IBS-C may
find symptoms slightly worsened
because of decreased dietary fiber.
They can use oat and rice bran as a
fiber source instead.
So what are FODMAPs? Oligosaccharides include vegetables artichokes, asparagus, beets, broccoli,
Brussel sprouts, cabbage, fennel,
garlic, leeks, okra, onions, peas,
and shallots; fruits watermelon,
apple, white peaches, and persimmon; flour - wheat and rye; and
legumes chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, baked beans, and soy
beans. Disaccharides include milk
(cow, goat, and sheep), yogurt, soft
cheeses, custard, and ice cream.
Monosaccharides include fruits
apples, pears, peaches, mango, sugar snap peas, watermelon,
canned fruit in natural juice, concentrated fruit sources, and large
servings of fruit, dried fruit, and
fruit juice, honey, and sweeteners like fructose and high-fructose
corn syrup (which seems to be
in almost everything these days).
Polyols include vegetables avocados, cauliflower, mushrooms, snow
peas, and sweet corn; fruits apples, apricots, pears, cherries, nec-

tarines, peaches, plums, prunes,
and watermelon; and artificial
sweeteners like isomalt, maltitol,
mannitol, sorbitol, and xylitol.
While the above list may seem
long, there are many non-FODMAP alternatives that can be used
including other fruits and vegetables, lactose-free dairy products, maple syrup, and sucrose.
In addition, probiotics are usually recommended for improving
symptoms in IBS. Research has
also shown that a low-FODMAP
diet also improves symptoms in
inflammatory bowel diseases like
Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis. Someone planning to start a
low-FODMAP diet should consult
with a knowledgeable dietician as
well as their physician (usually a
gastroenterologist) as most physicians, perhaps with the exclusion
of nutritionists, lack the formal
knowledge and training in food
composition.

Becoming a Lawmaker: Part 1

A year ago, I was searching

for apartments in Albany.
I had recently been hired as
legal counsel and legislative
director for New York State
Senator James Sanders Jr. With
the Senate resuming in January, my presence would be
required daily in the capital.
Admittedly, most of my time
in New York had been spent
around the five boroughs. As
I did not appreciate the cold,
a trip for me usually entailed
heading south. This would be
a whole new world, of mountains and sub-zero temperatures and upstate Republicans.
Not knowing what to expect,
I wondered if I would be greeted by a team of assistants upon
my arrival.
"Will this be a group effort or
a one man show?" I somewhat
naively asked the chief of staff.
"A one man show," he replied. "You're the show."
There was no team awaiting
me -- only a moderately spa-
cious government office with

new desks and computers the
state had graciously dumped
on the floor. I arranged the
furniture, plugged everything
in and threw up some postings
for interns.
Then it was time to go to
work.
My strategy in directing the
senator's legislative portfolio
was to recommend a balance
between bills that represented
ambitious ideas worth advancing, even if they might not pass
in the current political climate,
and less sexy proposals more
likely see the light of day. Likewise, I sought a healthy mix of
changes to statewide policy and
local improvements pertinent
to Rockaway and south Queens.
One morning, the senator
and I arrived early to the minority conference room, where
members and staff met before
session. I had already made
my recommendations on the
day's votes and there was still
time before the festivities were
scheduled to begin.
"Now tell me about the laws

you want to make," the senator
said.
Our system was that I would
pitch law ideas like a salesman,
and he would either approve,
pass or request changes. Often times he would question
me on details, which meant I
needed to have language prepared in advance. From his
level of enthusiasm, I could
tell which ones should be given priority.
"Why don't we introduce a
bill imposing a duty on residential landlords to mitigate
damages when tenants breach
their leases," I suggested.
In other words, the landlord
would be required, as in other
states, to seek a new tenant to
make up for lost rent instead
of intentionally keeping the
property vacant and suing
for damages that could have
been reasonably avoided. I
explained this as a tension between property law and contract law, of which such obligation was a hallmark.

We were soon in a hypothetical discussion about selling apples and decided we

would come back to that one. I
flipped the page, turning to my
next bill.
"This one, this one I think
you'll like."
It was a concept left behind
by my predecessor. Called the
Long Island Rail Road Fare Act,
it sought to remedy the injustice of Far Rockaway Station's
exclusion from the weekend
reduced fare program. This
early version of the bill I inherited mandated that all stations
in the system enjoy the same
discount. Though well intentioned, that approach was too
expensive to be practical.
The senator advised if we
could find a way to make it
work, it would be a major victory.
That evening, I sat in my
apartment with a steak and
pondered ways to rewrite
the bill. I was still new to this
world, but my place in it was
becoming more apparent.

glass, as if it were a magnet
and I was a nail. Then I hurried home and told my mom
about the doll. She suggested that I write to Santa. The
next day my mother notified me that her cousin had
breast cancer. So that night I
grabbed a pen and paper and

would like to ask for some-
thing more important. Please

bring my cousin home with
her family for Christmas instead. It is only possible with

necklace? Tickets to Broadway? No! I need something
better. Aha! An idea popped
in my head like popcorn in
the microwave. Ill give her
a day filled with peace, love,
joy and happiness. I am the
leprechaun who has found
the pot of gold at the end of
the rainbow. My grandma is
that pot of gold. Not only is
she my grandma, she is my
best friend.

youre still doing your holiday
shopping. If there is a DIYer
on your list, let me help you
with a few gift ideas. Excluding the obvious gift card, I put
together a list of the top 10
that I would recommend.
1- Ryobi drill bit set. Ive
seen these on sale recently
starting at $9.99 and up. A set
with a good assortment and/
or duplicate size bits (drill bits
always dull and break) makes
a great gift.
2- Flashlight set. They sell
sets with multiple size flash-

Serves: 4
Ingredients:
2 chicken breast
1 handful of fresh basil
4 slices of mozzarella cheese
Salt and Pepper
1 tbsp olive oil
1 pint cherry tomatoes,
halved (8oz)
2 garlic cloves, crushed
3/4 cup of white wine
1 oz Parmesan cheese
Directions:
Season the chicken breast
on each side with salt and
pepper.
In a frying pan, add the olive oil on medium heat and
caramelise the chicken breast
on each side.
Once chicken is caramelised nicely on each side, add
lights or you can buy an assortment of sizes and/or

styles. A serious DIYer would
appreciate a gift like this.
3- A set of hammers. Thats
right, there are different hammers for different things so
be sure to have a salesperson
help you find the right hammers for the type of projects
your DIYer does. I prefer EastWing. They are well balanced
and built to last.
4- Cordless tool set. I highly
recommend the 18-volt Ryobi
Plus +1 set. They have good
power and are long lasting.
I saw a set with the circular
saw, reciprocating saw, drill,
crushed garlic to the frying
pan followed by the tomatoes.
Deglaze the pan with the
white wine and grate the Parmesan cheese over the chicken and tomatoes.
Scrunch up the basil and
slice it so it shreds and add to
pan.
Cut four slices of mozzarella cheese and place two slices
over each breast, or enough to
cover whole breasts.
Bake in oven for 15-20 min
at 400F 200C. Serve immediately with tomatoes and
juices on side.

level). Though I wouldnt
want this to be my only level,
I cant remember a time that I
didnt own one.
10- Stud finder. A good quality stud finder can be a great
asset in many DIYer projects.

CELEBRATES 20 YEARS
On a snowy evening in winter
1996, Joe Featherston, a group of
his running partners and extended
family members got together to discuss a Special Olympics program for
Rockaway. They gathered in the St.
Camillus gym to talk over this great
idea. The late Fr. Dunne and Fr. Bill
gave their blessing for the program
to use the St. Camillus gym. St.
Camillus Special Olympics program
was born in September, 1996. There
were eight athletes and six volunteers
on that opening Monday evening.
Now 20 years later, we have 70
athletes and many volunteers.
With the blessing of our current
pastor, Fr. Richard Ahlemeyer, we
still use the same gym. Our athletes love a party, and so, on November 5, 2016 we had a celebration
to mark our 20th anniversary.
We began the evening with Mass
celebrated by Fr. Thomas Basquel.
Some of our athletes participated
in the Mass. Danny Dory was our
Eucharist Minister. Denise Kiernan
was our altar server. Heather Huber
and Elizabeth Sena presented the
Offertory gifts. Our ushers were Alex

Paul DeVincenzo and Thomas Ryan.
After a prayer at Our Ladys Garden to remember Emily Hutton and
Mary Haggerty, we walked over to
the party. Volunteers had transformed the gym into a lovely red,
white and blue party setting.
The athletes marched into the gym
led by a bagpiper. As they passed by,
all in attendance cheered. The microphone was handed to the athletes,
and each one made a heartfelt and
emotional remark as many thanked
their families, volunteer coaches and
fellow athletes. We had dinner, and
then THE DANCING BEGAN. This is
the usual favorite activity of our group.
Hard to believe, but the athletes
grew tired and the evening ended with the song Thats What
Friends Are For. The athletes sincerely thank all in the community
who have supported the program
over the last twenty years. The athletes also want to thank Christine
Parchment, Tim Henning and ReHard work paid off for Elgina Moerdyk for their efforts in jza, Sasha, Meital, JW, Nico
planning such a memorable event. Max, Keiran, Liam, Quinton,
