AN INTRODUCTION TO
AUTOMATION IN POULTRY AND EGG
PRODUCTION

POULTRY THE MAIN SOURCE OF

PROTEIN / WHITE MEAT AND EGGS

POULTRY
AUTOMATION POTENTIAL
BREEDER High* shed, feeder, litter removal,
candler, incubator
BROILER High* shed, feeder, litter (removal),
LAYER High* - shed, feeder, litter (manure),
egg collector
* Can be highly automated

Advantages of automation in poultry

production

Minimal labour input but high capital cost

Ease of maintenance
Conducive environment
Timeliness

Automation in poultry industry

Amongst other tasks, automation system feed the birds,
transport, handle and pack eggs and manage shed ventilation
Automation is achievable through the use of robots
A robot is any machine that performs repetitive tasks with
some degree of automation. Typically, when humans perform
repetitive tasks they get tired or lose concentration. Robots
dont!
An example of a robotic process in the modern cage egg
industry is the use of integrated conveyor belts to collect and
transport eggs to the packing room. Conveyor belts eliminate
the need to handle eggs.

What can robot (automation) do in the poultry

industry
traditionally labour intensive and involved repetitive actions by workers
These tasks had been automated in Layer industry:
Eg. - Feeding birds,
- removing manure
- collecting, counting, grading and packing eggs
Automation in broiler production:
Eg. - hatched chicks can be automatically transferred from the incubator
to the broiler shed floor and bird growth
- monitor using automatic weighing platforms.
- Information from the weighing platform also improves the precision
management of the birds for their feed or environmental
requirements

Controlled environment
Fully automated systems are controlled by a
computer which monitors various sensors for
- temperature,
- humidity,
- gas levels (smell) and so on.
Ventilation (fans and vents) is managed by the
computer to maintain the environmental parameters
within the desired comfort levels.

This lecture highlight the automation for the

the production of Layer and Broiler. The
breeder farm technology is given less priority
(but it is equally a lucrative business).

HOUSING
Advantages of an Environmentally Controlled shed:

Improved feed conversion ratio

Better quality bird meat
Increased productivity and health of the chicken
Reduced mortality
One extra batch (or cycle) per year per shed
Fully system controlled with no manual controls
Records can be stored and retrieved for 5 years
