Chapter I: PREAMBLE
1.1
Introduction:
India the worlds largest democracy of 1.25 billion people steered in the direction of prosperity
through the wheels of development. It's per capita energy consumption reached 1000 kilowatthour (kWh) with a total installed capacity of electrical power is around 3 lakh MW (see Fig.1).
However, the power generation in India is dominated by thermal means with a share of 70% in a
total power production (see Fig.2) and presents an area of concern due to its negative impact on
the environment due to the emission of greenhouse gasses. On the other hand, Indias crude oil
import increased to more than 16 tonne million presently as shown in fig. 3 which is mainly due
to the growth in the automobile sector. The automobile industry accounts for 7.1 percent of the
country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and mainly dominated by the Two Wheelers segment
owing to a growing middle class and a young population. However, the exhaust of these vehicles
is also creating negative impact on the environment due to the emission of greenhouse gasses.
India is the fourth largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world (see Fig.4) and the the Thus,
the increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere creates global concern due to
the climate change which threatens not only human health and quality of life but also affects
ecosystems.

Sustainable Energy and Green Technologies, therefore, can be the engine for future economic
growth with environmental sustainability having the culture of three R's that is Reduce, Reuse,
and Recycle for India. A sustainable energy includes renewable energy sources mainly solar,
wind and bioenergy with an Indian perspective. Costs of these technologies have fallen
dramatically in recent years and continue to fall made these technologies economically
competitive. Moreover, government policies support investor confidence and these markets are
expanding to the point where many studies support 100% renewable energy.

of Human Resource Development (HRD) specifically for Indian Renewable Energy sector
estimated employment generation is projected around 10,51,000 considering moderate growth by
2020. The report also suggested the specific skill requirements from the professionals and also
highlighted skill gaps. The present technical institutes and university are unable to provide
specific skilled professionals for the RE sector. Therefore, It is an opportunity for GTU under
the PG Research Center for Sustainable Energy and Green Technology to device courses
which can generate skill manpower and professional to grab the opportunities of
employment and be the part of changing India.
